Zechariah 3

New International Reader’s Version

from Biblica

A vision of the high priest dressed in fine clothes

1 Then the LORD showed me Joshua the high priest. He was standing in front of the angel of the LORD. Satan was standing to the right of Joshua. He was there to bring charges against the high priest. 2 The LORD said to Satan, ‘May the LORD correct you! He has chosen Jerusalem. So may he correct you! Isn’t this man Joshua like a burning stick pulled out of the fire?’ 3 Joshua stood in front of the angel. He was wearing clothes that were very dirty. 4 The angel spoke to those who were standing near him. He said, ‘Take his dirty clothes off.’ He said to Joshua, ‘I have taken your sin away. I will put fine clothes on you.’ 5 I added, ‘Put a clean turban on his head.’ So they did. And they dressed him while the angel of the LORD stood by. 6 Then the angel spoke to Joshua. He said, 7 ‘The LORD who rules over all says, “You must obey me. You must do what I have commanded. Then you will rule in my temple. You will be in charge of my courtyards. And I will give you a place among these who are standing here. 8 ‘ “High Priest Joshua, pay attention! I want you other priests who are sitting with Joshua to listen also. All you men are signs of things to come. I am going to bring to you my servant the Branch. 9 Look at the stone I have put in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on that one stone. I will carve a message on it,” says the LORD who rules over all. “And I will remove the sin of this land in one day. 10 ‘ “At that time each of you will invite your neighbours to visit you. They will sit under your vines and fig-trees,” announces the LORD.’

A Vision of Joshua the High Priest

1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan[1] standing at his right hand to accuse him. (1Ch 21:1; Ezr 3:2; Ps 109:6; Zec 6:11) 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand[2] plucked from the fire?” (Am 4:11; Zec 1:17; Ro 8:33; Jud 1:9) 3 Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments. (Isa 64:6; Zec 3:1; Jud 1:23) 4 And the angel said to those who were standing before him, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” And to him he said, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.” (Isa 6:7; Isa 61:10; Zec 3:7; Zec 3:9; Lu 1:19; Lu 15:22; Re 7:14; Re 19:8) 5 And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord was standing by. (Job 29:14; Zec 6:11) 6 And the angel of the Lord solemnly assured Joshua, (Zec 3:1) 7 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: If you will walk in my ways and keep my charge, then you shall rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you the right of access among those who are standing here. (Ge 26:5; Le 8:35; De 17:9; Zec 3:4; Mal 2:7; Mal 3:14) 8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who sit before you, for they are men who are a sign: behold, I will bring my servant the Branch. (Isa 11:1; Isa 42:1; Jer 23:5; Eze 12:11; Zec 6:12) 9 For behold, on the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with seven eyes,[3] I will engrave its inscription, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day. (Ezr 3:9; Ps 118:22; Isa 28:16; Zec 3:4; Zec 4:7; Zec 4:10; 2Ti 2:19; Re 5:6) 10 In that day, declares the Lord of hosts, every one of you will invite his neighbor to come under his vine and under his fig tree.” (1Ki 4:25)
