Psalm 14

New International Reader’s Version

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

1 Foolish people say in their hearts, ‘There is no God.’ They do all kinds of horrible and evil things. No one does anything good. 

2 The LORD looks down from heaven on all people. He wants to see if there are any who understand. He wants to see if there are any who trust in God. 

3 All of them have turned away. They have all become evil. No one does anything good, no one at all. 

4 Do all these people who do evil know nothing? They eat up my people as if they were eating bread. They never call out to the LORD. 

5 But just look at them! They are filled with terror because God is among those who do right. 

6 You who do evil keep poor people from succeeding. But the LORD is their place of safety. 

7 How I pray that the God who saves Israel will come out of Zion! Then the LORD will bless his people with great success again. So let the people of Jacob be filled with joy! Let Israel be glad!

The Fool Says, There Is No God

1 To the choirmaster. Of David. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good. (Ge 6:5; Ge 6:11; Job 2:10; Ps 10:4; Ps 53:1; Ps 74:18; Ps 74:22; Ro 3:10) 

2 The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. (2Ch 15:2; 2Ch 19:3; Ps 11:4; Ps 102:19) 

3 They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one. (Job 15:16) 

4 Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the Lord? (Ps 27:2; Ps 79:6; Ps 82:5; Pr 30:14; Isa 1:3; Isa 64:7; Jer 4:22; Jer 10:25; Ho 7:7; Am 8:4; Mic 3:3) 

5 There they are in great terror, for God is with the generation of the righteous. (Ps 24:6; Ps 73:15) 

6 You would shame the plans of the poor, but the Lord is his refuge. (Ps 46:1; Ps 61:3; Ps 62:7; Ps 91:2; Ps 142:5) 

7 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad. (Job 42:10; Ps 85:1; Ps 126:1; Jer 30:18; Eze 16:53; Eze 39:25; Ho 6:11; Joe 3:1)
