2 Kings 15

New International Reader’s Version

1 Uzziah began to rule as king over Judah. It was in the 27th year that Jeroboam was king of Israel. Uzziah was the son of Amaziah.2 Uzziah was 16 years old when he became king. He ruled in Jerusalem for 52 years. His mother’s name was Jekoliah. She was from Jerusalem.3 Uzziah did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Amaziah had done.4 But the high places weren’t removed. The people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.5 The LORD caused King Uzziah to suffer from a skin disease until the day he died. He lived in a separate house. His son Jotham was in charge of the palace. Jotham ruled over the people of the land.6 The other events of the rule of Uzziah are written down. Everything he did is written in the official records of the kings of Judah.7 Uzziah joined the members of his family who had already died. He was buried near them in the City of David. Uzziah’s son Jotham became the next king after him.8 Zechariah became king of Israel in Samaria. It was in the 38th year that Uzziah was king of Judah. Zechariah ruled for six months. He was the son of Jeroboam, the son of Jehoash.9 Zechariah did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD. He did what the kings of Israel before him had done. He didn’t turn away from the sins Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, had committed. Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit those same sins.10 Shallum made evil plans against Zechariah. He attacked Zechariah in front of the people and killed him. Then he became the next king after him. Shallum was the son of Jabesh.11 The other events of the rule of Zechariah are written down. They are written in the official records of the kings of Israel.12 What happened to Zechariah is what the LORD said would happen. He had spoken that message to Jehu. The LORD had said, ‘Your sons after you will sit on the throne of Israel. They will rule until the time of your children’s grandchildren.’ (2Ki 10:30)13 Shallum became king of Israel. It was in the 39th year that Uzziah was king of Judah. Shallum ruled in Samaria for one month. He was the son of Jabesh.14 Menahem went from Tirzah up to Samaria. There he attacked Shallum, the son of Jabesh. Menahem killed him and became the next king after him. Menahem was the son of Gadi.15 The other events of Shallum’s rule are written down. The evil things he planned are written down. All these things are written in the official records of the kings of Israel.16 At that time Menahem started out from Tirzah and attacked Tiphsah. He attacked everyone in the city and the area around it. That’s because they refused to open their gates for him. He destroyed Tiphsah. He ripped open all their pregnant women.17 Menahem became king of Israel. It was in the 39th year that Uzziah was king of Judah. Menahem ruled in Samaria for ten years. He was the son of Gadi.18 Menahem did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD. During his entire rule he didn’t turn away from the sins Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, had committed. Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit those same sins.19 Then Tiglath-Pileser marched into the land of Israel. He was king of Assyria. Menahem gave him 36 tonnes of silver to get his help. He wanted to make his control over the kingdom stronger.20 Menahem forced Israel to give him that money. Every wealthy person had to give him 600 grams of silver. All of it went to the king of Assyria. So he pulled his troops back. He didn’t stay in the land anymore.21 The other events of the rule of Menahem are written down. Everything he did is written in the official records of the kings of Israel.22 Menahem joined the members of his family who had already died. Menahem’s son Pekahiah became the next king after him.23 Pekahiah became king of Israel in Samaria. It was in the 50th year that Uzziah was king of Judah. Pekahiah ruled for two years. He was the son of Menahem.24 Pekahiah did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD. He didn’t turn away from the sins Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, had committed. Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit those same sins.25 One of Pekahiah’s chief officers was Pekah. He was the son of Remaliah. Pekah made evil plans against Pekahiah. He took 50 men from Gilead with him and killed Pekahiah. Pekah also killed Argob and Arieh. He killed all of them in the safest place in the royal palace at Samaria. So Pekah killed Pekahiah. He became the next king after him.26 The other events of the rule of Pekahiah are written down. Everything he did is written in the official records of the kings of Israel.27 Pekah became king of Israel in Samaria. It was in the 52nd year that Uzziah was king of Judah. Pekah ruled for 20 years. He was the son of Remaliah.28 Pekah did what was evil in the eyes of the LORD. He didn’t turn away from the sins Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, had committed. Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit those same sins.29 During the rule of Pekah, the king of Israel, Tiglath-Pileser marched into the land again. He was king of Assyria. He captured the towns of Ijon, Abel Beth Maakah, Janoah, Kedesh and Hazor. He also captured the lands of Gilead and Galilee. That included the whole territory of Naphtali. He took the people away from their own land. He sent them off to Assyria.30 Then Hoshea made evil plans against Pekah, the son of Remaliah. Hoshea was the son of Elah. Hoshea attacked Pekah and killed him. Then Hoshea became the next king after him. It was in the 20th year of the rule of Jotham, the son of Uzziah.31 The other events of the rule of Pekah are written down. Everything he did is written in the official records of the kings of Israel.32 Jotham began to rule as king over Judah. It was in the second year that Pekah was king of Israel. He was the son of Remaliah. Jotham was the son of Uzziah.33 Jotham was 25 years old when he became king. He ruled in Jerusalem for 16 years. His mother’s name was Jerusha. She was the daughter of Zadok.34 Jotham did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Uzziah had done.35 But the high places weren’t removed. The people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there. Jotham rebuilt the Upper Gate of the LORD’s temple.36 The other events of the rule of Jotham are written down. Everything he did is written in the official records of the kings of Judah.37 In those days the LORD began to send Rezin and Pekah against Judah. Rezin was king of Aram. Pekah was the son of Remaliah.38 Jotham joined the members of his family who had already died. He was buried in the family tomb in the city of King David. Jotham’s son Ahaz became the next king after him.

2 Kings 15

English Standard Version

1 In the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Azariah the son of Amaziah, king of Judah, began to reign. (2Ki 14:17; 2Ki 15:13; 2Ki 15:30; 2Ki 15:32; 2Ki 15:34; 2Ch 26:1)2 He was sixteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jecoliah of Jerusalem. (2Ch 26:3)3 And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that his father Amaziah had done.4 Nevertheless, the high places were not taken away. The people still sacrificed and made offerings on the high places. (2Ki 12:3)5 And the Lord touched the king, so that he was a leper[1] to the day of his death, and he lived in a separate house.[2] And Jotham the king’s son was over the household, governing the people of the land. (Le 13:46; 2Ch 26:21)6 Now the rest of the acts of Azariah, and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?7 And Azariah slept with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David, and Jotham his son reigned in his place. (2Ch 26:23)8 In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah the son of Jeroboam reigned over Israel in Samaria six months.9 And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, as his fathers had done. He did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin. (1Ki 14:16)10 Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him and struck him down at Ibleam and put him to death and reigned in his place. (Am 7:9)11 Now the rest of the deeds of Zechariah, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.12 (This was the promise of the Lord that he gave to Jehu, “Your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.” And so it came to pass.) (2Ki 10:30)13 Shallum the son of Jabesh began to reign in the thirty-ninth year of Uzziah[3] king of Judah, and he reigned one month in Samaria. (1Ki 16:24; 2Ki 15:1)14 Then Menahem the son of Gadi came up from Tirzah and came to Samaria, and he struck down Shallum the son of Jabesh in Samaria and put him to death and reigned in his place. (1Ki 14:17)15 Now the rest of the deeds of Shallum, and the conspiracy that he made, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.16 At that time Menahem sacked Tiphsah and all who were in it and its territory from Tirzah on, because they did not open it to him. Therefore he sacked it, and he ripped open all the women in it who were pregnant. (2Ki 8:12)17 In the thirty-ninth year of Azariah king of Judah, Menahem the son of Gadi began to reign over Israel, and he reigned ten years in Samaria.18 And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not depart all his days from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin.19 Pul[4] the king of Assyria came against the land, and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents[5] of silver, that he might help him to confirm his hold on the royal power. (2Ki 14:5; 1Ch 5:26)20 Menahem exacted the money from Israel, that is, from all the wealthy men, fifty shekels[6] of silver from every man, to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria turned back and did not stay there in the land.21 Now the rest of the deeds of Menahem and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?22 And Menahem slept with his fathers, and Pekahiah his son reigned in his place.23 In the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekahiah the son of Menahem began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned two years.24 And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin. (2Ki 15:9)25 And Pekah the son of Remaliah, his captain, conspired against him with fifty men of the people of Gilead, and struck him down in Samaria, in the citadel of the king’s house with Argob and Arieh; he put him to death and reigned in his place.26 Now the rest of the deeds of Pekahiah and all that he did, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.27 In the fifty-second year of Azariah king of Judah, Pekah the son of Remaliah began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned twenty years.28 And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin. (1Ki 14:16)29 In the days of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria came and captured Ijon, Abel-beth-maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali, and he carried the people captive to Assyria. (Jos 11:1; Jos 19:37; Jud 4:2; 2Sa 20:14; 1Ki 9:15; 1Ki 15:20; 2Ki 16:7; 1Ch 5:6; 1Ch 5:26; 2Ch 28:20; Isa 9:1)30 Then Hoshea the son of Elah made a conspiracy against Pekah the son of Remaliah and struck him down and put him to death and reigned in his place, in the twentieth year of Jotham the son of Uzziah. (2Ki 17:1)31 Now the rest of the acts of Pekah and all that he did, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.32 In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, Jotham the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, began to reign.33 He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jerusha the daughter of Zadok. (2Ch 27:1)34 And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that his father Uzziah had done. (2Ki 15:3; 2Ch 27:6)35 Nevertheless, the high places were not removed. The people still sacrificed and made offerings on the high places. He built the upper gate of the house of the Lord. (2Ki 12:3; 2Ch 23:20; 2Ch 27:3)36 Now the rest of the acts of Jotham and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?37 In those days the Lord began to send Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah against Judah. (2Ki 16:5; Isa 7:1)38 Jotham slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father, and Ahaz his son reigned in his place.
