1 Corinthians 5

New International Reader’s Version

1 It is actually reported that there is sexual sin among you. I’m told that a man is sleeping with his father’s wife. Even people who don’t know God don’t let that kind of sin continue.2 And you are proud! Shouldn’t you be very sad instead? Shouldn’t you have thrown out of your church the man doing this?3 Even though I am not right there with you, I am with you in spirit. And because I am with you in spirit, I have already judged the man doing this. I have judged him in the name of our Lord Jesus.4 So when you come together, I will be with you in spirit. The power of our Lord Jesus will also be with you.5 When you come together like this, hand this man over to Satan. Then the power of sin in his life will be destroyed. His spirit will be saved on the day the Lord returns.6 Your boasting is not good. It is like yeast. Don’t you know that just a little yeast makes the whole batch of dough rise?7 Get rid of the old yeast. Then you can be like a new batch of dough without yeast. That is what you really are. That’s because Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been offered up for us.8 So let us keep the Feast, but not with the old bread made with yeast. The yeast I’m talking about is hatred and evil. Let us keep the Feast with bread made without yeast. Let us keep it with bread that is honesty and truth.9 I wrote a letter to you to tell you to stay away from people who commit sexual sins.10 I didn’t mean the people of this world who sin in this way. I didn’t mean those who always want more and more. I didn’t mean those who cheat or who worship statues of gods. In that case you would have to leave this world!11 But here is what I am writing to you now. You must stay away from anyone who claims to be a believer but does evil things. Stay away from anyone who commits sexual sins. Stay away from anyone who always wants more and more things. Stay away from anyone who worships statues of gods. Stay away from anyone who tells lies about others. Stay away from anyone who gets drunk or who cheats. Don’t even eat with people like these.12 Is it my business to judge those outside the church? Aren’t you supposed to judge those inside the church?13 God will judge those outside. Scripture says, ‘Get rid of that evil person!’ (De 17:7; De 19:19; De 21:21; De 22:21; De 22:24; De 24:7)

1 Corinthians 5

English Standard Version

1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. (Le 18:8; De 22:30; De 27:20; 2Co 12:21)2 And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you. (1Co 4:6; 2Co 7:7)3 For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. (Col 2:5; 1Th 2:17)4 When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, (Mt 16:19; Mt 18:18; Joh 20:23; 2Co 13:3; 2Co 13:10; 2Th 3:6; 1Ti 5:20)5 you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.[1] (Job 2:6; Pr 23:14; Ac 26:18; 1Co 1:8; 1Ti 1:20)6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? (1Co 5:2; 1Co 15:33; Ga 5:9; Jas 4:16)7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.8 Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. (Ex 12:15; De 16:3; Mt 16:6; Mt 16:12; Mr 8:15; Lu 12:1)9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— (2Co 6:14; Eph 5:11; 2Th 3:6; 2Th 3:14)10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. (Joh 17:15; 1Co 6:9; 1Co 10:27; Eph 5:5; Col 3:5)11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. (2Th 3:6)12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church[2] whom you are to judge? (Mr 4:11; 1Co 6:1)13 God judges[3] those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.” (De 13:5; De 17:7; De 17:12; De 21:21; De 22:21; De 22:24; Jud 20:13)
