1During those days another large crowd gathered. They had nothing to eat. So Jesus called for his disciples to come to him. He said,2‘I feel deep concern for these people. They have already been with me three days. They don’t have anything to eat.3If I send them away hungry, they will become too weak on their way home. Some of them have come from far away.’4His disciples answered him. ‘There is nothing here,’ they said. ‘Where can anyone get enough bread to feed them?’5‘How many loaves do you have?’ Jesus asked. ‘Seven’, they replied.6He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. He took the seven loaves and gave thanks to God. Then he broke them and gave them to his disciples. They passed the pieces of bread around to the people.7The disciples also had a few small fish. Jesus gave thanks for them too. He told the disciples to pass them around.8The people ate and were satisfied. After that, the disciples picked up seven baskets of leftover pieces.9About 4,000 people were there. After Jesus sent them away,10he got into a boat with his disciples. He went to the area of Dalmanutha.11The Pharisees came and began to ask Jesus questions. They wanted to test him. So they asked him for a sign from heaven.12He sighed deeply. He said, ‘Why do you people ask for a sign? What I’m about to tell you is true. No sign will be given to you.’13Then he left them. He got back into the boat and crossed to the other side of the lake.
The yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
14The disciples had forgotten to bring bread. They had only one loaf with them in the boat.15‘Be careful’, Jesus warned them. ‘Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees. And watch out for the yeast of Herod.’16They talked about this with each other. They said, ‘He must be saying this because we don’t have any bread.’17Jesus knew what they were saying. So he asked them, ‘Why are you talking about having no bread? Why can’t you see or understand? Are you stubborn?18Do you have eyes and still don’t see? Do you have ears and still don’t hear? And don’t you remember?19Earlier I broke five loaves for the 5,000. How many baskets of pieces did you pick up?’ ‘Twelve’, they replied.20‘Later I broke seven loaves for the 4,000. How many baskets of pieces did you pick up?’ ‘Seven’, they answered.21He said to them, ‘Can’t you understand yet?’
Jesus heals a blind man at Bethsaida
22Jesus and his disciples came to Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to him. They begged Jesus to touch him.23He took the blind man by the hand. Then he led him outside the village. He spat on the man’s eyes and placed his hands on him. ‘Do you see anything?’ Jesus asked.24The man looked up. He said, ‘I see people. They look like trees walking around.’25Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened so that he could see again. He saw everything clearly.26Jesus sent him home. He told him, ‘Don’t even go into the village.’
Peter says that Jesus is the Messiah
27Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, ‘Who do people say I am?’28They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist. Others say Elijah. Still others say one of the prophets.’29‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah.’30Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
Jesus tells about his coming death
31Jesus then began to teach his disciples. He taught them that the Son of Man must suffer many things. He taught them that the elders would not accept him. The chief priests and the teachers of the law would not accept him either. He must be killed and after three days rise again.32He spoke clearly about this. Peter took Jesus to one side and began to scold him.33Jesus turned and looked at his disciples. He scolded Peter. ‘Get behind me, Satan!’ he said. ‘You are not thinking about the things God cares about. Instead, you are thinking only about the things humans care about.’
You must pick up your cross
34Jesus called the crowd to him along with his disciples. He said, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must say no to themselves. They must pick up their cross and follow me.35Whoever wants to save their life will lose it. But whoever loses their life for me and for the good news will save it.36What good is it if someone gains the whole world but loses their soul?37Or what can anyone trade for their soul?38Suppose anyone is ashamed of me and my words among these adulterous and sinful people. Then the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.’

En del av dem bor ju långt härifrån.”4Men hans efterföljare svarade: ”Var ska vi få tag på tillräckligt med mat åt alla dessa människor här i ödemarken?”5Jesus frågade: ”Hur många bröd har ni?” ”Sju”, svarade de.6Då bad Jesus folket att slå sig ner på marken, och han tog de sju bröden, tackade Gud för dem och bröt dem i bitar. Sedan gav han bitarna till sina efterföljare, som i sin tur delade ut dem bland folket.7Man hade dessutom några små fiskar, och Jesus tackade Gud för dem också och bad sedan sina efterföljare att dela ut dem.8Alla åt och blev mätta, och när man samlade ihop det som var över, blev det sju hela korgar.9Det var omkring 4 000 personer där. Jesus skickade sedan hem folket10och steg i en båt och åkte till trakten av Dalmanuta[1] tillsammans med sina efterföljare.
De religiösa ledarna vill se ett tecken från Gud
11När fariseerna[2] fick veta att Jesus var där, kom de för att diskutera med honom, och de krävde att han skulle ge dem ett tecken från Gud som bevis på vem han var.12Jesus blev djupt besviken när han hörde detta och suckade: ”Varför måste detta släkte se ett tecken för att kunna tro. Nej, jag försäkrar er att Gud inte ska låta er få se något tecken.”13Sedan lämnade han dem och steg i båten igen och åkte över till andra sidan sjön.
Jesus varnar för falsk undervisning
14Jesus efterföljare upptäckte nu att de hade glömt att skaffa mat innan de for. En enda brödkaka var allt de hade med sig i båten.15Jesus varnade dem då och sa: ”Akta er noga för både fariseernas[3] och kung Herodes jäst.”16”Vad menar han?” frågade hans efterföljare varandra. Men de antog att han sa detta därför att de hade glömt att ta med sig bröd.17När Jesus hörde dem diskutera sa han till dem: ”Varför är ni så oroliga för att ni inte har något bröd? Förstår ni fortfarande ingenting? Är ni så trögfattade?18Ni har ögon att se med och ser ändå ingenting, och öron att höra med och hör ändå ingenting. Kommer ni inte ihåg19att jag mättade mer än 5 000 personer med bara fem bröd? Hur många korgar med rester plockade ni upp den gången?””Tolv”, sa de.20”Och när jag mättade mer än 4 000 personer med sju bröd, hur många korgar fick ni över då?””Sju”, svarade de.21Jesus sa: ”Förstår ni fortfarande ingenting?”
En blind man börjar se igen
22När de kom över till Betsaida förde man fram en blind man till Jesus och bad att han skulle röra vid mannen och bota honom.23Jesus tog då den blinda mannen vid handen och ledde honom ut ur byn. Sedan spottade han på hans ögon och la sina händer på honom.”Kan du se något?” frågade Jesus.24Mannen såg sig omkring. ”Ja”, sa han, ”jag ser människor. Men de ser ut som träd som går omkring!”25Då la Jesus sina händer på mannens ögon en gång till. Och nu blev mannen helt botad och kunde se igen, och han såg allting klart och tydligt.26Jesus skickade sedan hem honom med uppmaningen: ”Gå inte in i byn på hemvägen.”
Petrus kallar Jesus för Messias, den utlovade kungen
27Sedan lämnade Jesus och hans efterföljare Galileen och gick norrut till byarna kring Caesarea Filippi[4]. Och medan de vandrade där längs vägen frågade han dem: ”Vem säger människorna att jag är?”28”Somliga säger att du är Johannes döparen”, svarade hans efterföljare, ”några säger att du är Elia[5], och andra att du är någon annan av profeterna som förr i tiden framförde Guds budskap.”29Då frågade han dem: ”Vem tror ni att jag är?”Petrus svarade: ”Du är Messias[6], den utlovade kungen.”30Men Jesus förbjöd dem strängt att tala med någon om honom.
Jesus förutsäger för första gången att han ska dö
31Efter det började Jesus undervisa sina efterföljare om att han, Människosonen[7], måste lida mycket. Han förklarade att folkets ledare och översteprästerna och laglärarna skulle ta avstånd från honom och se till att han blev dödad, men att han efter tre dagar skulle uppstå från de döda igen.32Detta sa han helt öppet. Men Petrus drog honom åt sidan och började protestera.33Jesus vände sig då om och såg bort mot sina efterföljare och sa strängt till Petrus: ”Gå bort ifrån mig, Satan! Det du tänker är människotankar och kommer inte från Gud.”34Sedan kallade han till sig sina efterföljare och bad allt folket att komma. Och han sa till dem:”Om någon vill bli min efterföljare, så kan han inte längre tänka på sig själv, utan måste följa mitt exempel och vara beredd att dö.35Ja, den som klamrar sig fast vid livet ska till sist förlora det, men den som förlorar sitt liv för min skull, och för att sprida budskapet om mig, han ska rädda det.36Vad vinner en människa om hela världen blir hennes, om hon samtidigt förlorar det eviga livet?37Inga pengar i världen kan hjälpa henne att få det tillbaka.38Den som inför dessa gudlösa och syndiga människor skäms för mig och för mitt budskap, honom ska jag, Människosonen[8], skämmas för, när jag återvänder i min Fars härlighet tillsammans med hans änglar.”
