1This is the beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.2Long ago Isaiah the prophet wrote, ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you. He will prepare your way.’ (Mal 3:1)3‘A messenger is calling out in the desert, “Prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight paths for him.” ’ (Isa 40:3)4And so John the Baptist appeared in the desert. He preached that people should be baptised and turn away from their sins. Then God would forgive them.5All the people from the countryside of Judea went out to him. All the people from Jerusalem went too. When they admitted they had sinned, John baptised them in the River Jordan.6John wore clothes made out of camel’s hair. He had a leather belt around his waist. And he ate locusts and wild honey.7Here is what John was preaching. ‘After me, there is someone coming who is more powerful than I am. I’m not good enough to bend down and untie his sandals.8I baptise you with water. But he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.’
Jesus is baptised and tempted
9At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee. John baptised Jesus in the River Jordan.10Jesus was coming up out of the water. Just then he saw heaven being torn open. Jesus saw the Holy Spirit coming down on him like a dove.11A voice spoke to him from heaven. It said, ‘You are my Son, and I love you. I am very pleased with you.’12At once the Holy Spirit sent Jesus out into the desert.13He was in the desert 40 days. There Satan tempted him. The wild animals didn’t harm Jesus. Angels took care of him.
Jesus preaches the good news
14After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee. He preached the good news of God.15‘The time has come,’ he said. ‘The kingdom of God has come near. Turn away from your sins and believe the good news!’
Jesus chooses his first disciples
16One day Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee. There he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the lake. They were fishermen.17‘Come and follow me,’ Jesus said. ‘I will send you out to fish for people.’18At once they left their nets and followed him.19Then Jesus walked a little further. As he did, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat preparing their nets.20Right away he called out to them. They left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men. Then they followed Jesus.
Jesus drives out an evil spirit
21Jesus and those with him went to Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue. There he began to teach.22The people were amazed at his teaching. That’s because he taught them like one who had authority. He did not talk like the teachers of the law.23Just then a man in their synagogue cried out. He was controlled by an evil spirit. He said,24‘What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are the Holy One of God!’25‘Be quiet!’ said Jesus firmly. ‘Come out of him!’26The evil spirit shook the man wildly. Then it came out of him with a scream.27All the people were amazed. So they asked each other, ‘What is this? A new teaching! And with so much authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits, and they obey him.’28News about Jesus spread quickly all over Galilee.
Jesus heals many people
29Jesus and those with him left the synagogue. Right away they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.30Simon’s mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever. They told Jesus about her right away.31So he went to her. He took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her. Then she began to serve them.32That evening after sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who were ill. They also brought all who were controlled by demons.33All the people in town gathered at the door.34Jesus healed many of them. They had all kinds of diseases. He also drove out many demons. But he would not let the demons speak, because they knew who he was.
Jesus prays in a quiet place
35It was very early in the morning and still dark. Jesus got up and left the house. He went to a place where he could be alone. There he prayed.36Simon and his friends went to look for Jesus.37When they found him, they called out, ‘Everyone is looking for you!’38Jesus replied, ‘Let’s go somewhere else. I want to go to the nearby towns. I must preach there also. That is why I have come.’39So he travelled all around Galilee. He preached in their synagogues. He also drove out demons.
Jesus heals a man who had a skin disease
40A man who had a skin disease came to Jesus. On his knees he begged Jesus. He said, ‘If you are willing to make me “clean”, you can do it.’41Jesus became angry. He reached out his hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing to do it,’ Jesus said. ‘Be “clean”!’42Right away the disease left the man, and he was ‘clean’.43Jesus sent him away at once. He gave the man a strong warning.44‘Don’t tell this to anyone,’ he said. ‘Go and show yourself to the priest. Offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded. It will be a witness to the priest and the people that you are “clean”. ’45But the man went out and started talking right away. He spread the news to everyone. So Jesus could no longer enter a town openly. He stayed outside in lonely places. But people still came to him from everywhere.

Det var Johannes döparen. Han levde i ödemarken och undervisade människorna om att de kunde få sina synder förlåtna om de lämnade synden, vände om till Gud och lät döpa sig.5Människor från hela Judeen och alla i Jerusalem kom ut i ödemarken för att höra honom tala, och när de hade bekänt sina synder, döpte han dem i Jordanfloden.6Johannes hade kläder som var gjorda av kamelhår, och han hade ett läderbälte runt midjan. Den mat han åt var gräshoppor och vildhonung.7Han talade till folket och sa:”Snart kommer en som är större än jag. Han är så mäktig att jag inte ens är värdig att böja mig ner och knyta upp hans sandalremmar.[4]8Jag döper er med vatten, men han ska döpa er med Guds heliga Ande!”
Jesus blir döpt
9Medan Johannes höll på med att döpa, lämnade Jesus sin hemstad Nasaret i Galileen och kom och blev döpt av honom i Jordanfloden.10När Jesus sedan steg upp ur vattnet, fick han[5] se himlen öppna sig och Guds Ande sänka sig ner över honom som en duva.11Och en röst från himlen sa: ”Du är min älskade Son, du är min glädje.”
Jesus frestas av Satan
12-13Genast efter detta förde Guds Ande ut Jesus i ödemarken, och där stannade han under 40 dagar och blev frestad av Satan. Han levde bland de vilda djuren[6], och änglarna betjänade honom.
Jesus talar till folket i Galileen
14När kung Herodes lite senare satte Johannes i fängelse, gick Jesus tillbaka till Galileen för att sprida det glada budskapet från Gud.15Jesus sa: ”Tiden har nu kommit då Gud vill rädda människor och göra dem till sitt eget folk.[7] Lämna därför synden, vänd om till Gud och tro på det glada budskapet!”
De första efterföljarna
16En dag när Jesus vandrade längs Galileiska sjön fick han se Simon och hans bror Andreas stå och kasta ut nät i sjön, för de var fiskare.17Jesus ropade till dem: ”Kom och bli mina efterföljare, så ska jag visa er hur man fiskar människor istället!”18Och de lämnade genast sina nät och följde honom.19När han gick lite längre bort på stranden fick han se Sebedaios söner, Jakob och Johannes, sitta i en båt och göra i ordning sina nät.20Han kallade på dem också, och de lämnade då sin pappa Sebedaios och hans arbetare för att följa Jesus.
Jesus undervisar med makt
21Jesus och hans efterföljare kom nu till staden Kafarnaum, och när det blev vilodag[8] gick de till synagogan, där Jesus undervisade.22Alla var mycket häpna över hans undervisning, för han talade med makt, och inte som laglärarna[9].23I synagogan fanns den här dagen en man som var besatt av en ond ande, och han började skrika:24”Vad har du med oss att göra, Jesus från Nasaret? Har du kommit för att ta död på oss? Jag vet vem du är, du Guds heliga tjänare!”25Men Jesus befallde strängt den onda anden: ”Tig! Far ut ur honom!”26Och då började anden rycka och slita i mannen och for ut ur honom med ett våldsamt skrik.27Människorna i synagogan blev alldeles förskräckta och började diskutera med varandra och fråga: ”Vad är det här för en ny lära? Vilken makt! Till och med de onda andarna lyder hans order!”28Och ryktet om honom spred sig som en löpeld genom hela Galileen.
Jesus botar Simons svärmor och många andra
29När Jesus och hans efterföljare hade lämnat synagogan, gick de hem till Simon och Andreas, tillsammans med Jakob och Johannes.30Där låg Simons svärmor sjuk i hög feber och det berättade de genast för Jesus.31Han gick då fram till henne och tog henne i handen och reste henne upp. Och febern lämnade henne, och hon lagade mat åt dem.32På kvällen, efter solnedgången, kom man till honom med alla sjuka och besatta.33Varenda människa i Kafarnaum hade samlats utanför dörren.34Jesus botade många sjuka som led av olika slags sjukdomar, och han drev ut många onda andar. Men han förbjöd andarna att tala eftersom de visste vem han var.
Jesus talar till folket i Galileen
35Nästa morgon, långt före gryningen, gick Jesus bort därifrån till en enslig plats för att kunna be.36Simon och de andra skyndade snart ut för att leta reda på honom,37och när de hade hittat honom sa de: ”Alla frågar efter dig.”38Men han svarade: ”Vi måste gå till de andra städerna häromkring, så att jag kan sprida mitt budskap där också. Det var därför jag kom hit.”39Han vandrade sedan genom hela Galileen och talade i synagogorna[10] och drev ut många onda andar.
Jesus botar en spetälsk man
40En gång kom en spetälsk[11] man och föll ner på knä framför honom och bad: ”Om du vill, så kan du göra mig frisk.”41Då greps Jesus av medlidande, sträckte ut handen och rörde vid honom och sa: ”Det vill jag. Du är frisk!”42Och genast försvann spetälskan, och mannen var frisk.43Jesus skickade sedan bort honom och sa strängt till honom:44”Berätta inte detta för någon, utan gå till prästen och låt honom undersöka dig. Ta också med dig det offer som Mose har bestämt för spetälska personer som blivit friska.[12] Då kommer alla att förstå att Gud har botat dig.”45Men mannen gick genast iväg och berättade för alla han mötte att han hade blivit frisk. Jesus kunde därför inte visa sig öppet längre i någon stad, utan måste hålla till ute i ödemarken. Men folk kom ändå till honom från alla håll.
