1 You are the children that God dearly loves. So follow his example. 2 Lead a life of love, just as Christ did. He loved us. He gave himself up for us. He was a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God. 3 There should not be even a hint of sexual sin among you. Don’t do anything impure. And do not always want more and more. These are not the things God’s holy people should do. 4 There must not be any bad language or foolish talk or dirty jokes. They are out of place. Instead, you should give thanks. 5 Here is what you can be sure of. Those who give themselves over to sexual sins are lost. So are people whose lives are impure. The same is true of those who always want more and more. People who do these things might as well worship statues of gods. No one who does them will receive a share in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Don’t let anyone fool you with worthless words. People who say things like that aren’t obeying God. He is angry with them. 7 So don’t go along with people like that. 8 At one time you were in the dark. But now you are in the light because of what the Lord has done. Live like children of the light. 9 The light produces what is completely good, right and true. 10 Find out what pleases the Lord. 11 Have nothing to do with the acts of darkness. They don’t produce anything good. Show what they are really like. 12 It is shameful even to talk about what people who don’t obey do in secret. 13 But everything the light shines on can be seen. And everything that the light shines on becomes a light. 14 That is why it is said, ‘Wake up, sleeper. Rise from the dead. Then Christ will shine on you.’ 15 So be very careful how you live. Do not live like people who aren’t wise. Live like people who are wise. 16 Make the most of every opportunity. The days are evil. 17 So don’t be foolish. Instead, understand what the Lord wants. 18 Don’t fill yourself up with wine. Getting drunk will lead to wild living. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord. 20 Always give thanks to God the Father for everything. Give thanks to him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

21 Follow the lead of one another because of your respect for Christ. 22 Wives, follow the lead of your own husbands as you follow the Lord. 23 The husband is the head of the wife, just as Christ is the head of the church. The church is Christ’s body. He is its Saviour. 24 The church follows the lead of Christ. In the same way, wives should follow the lead of their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives. Love them just as Christ loved the church. He gave himself up for her. 26 He did it to make her holy. He made her clean by washing her with water and the word. 27 He did it to bring her to himself as a brightly shining church. He wants a church that has no stain or wrinkle or any other flaw. He wants a church that is holy and without blame. 28 In the same way, husbands should love their wives. They should love them as they love their own bodies. Any man who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body. Instead, they feed and care for their body. And this is what Christ does for the church. 30 We are parts of his body. 31 Scripture says, ‘That’s why a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. The two will become one.’ (Ge 2:24) 32 That is a deep mystery. But I’m talking about Christ and the church. 33 A husband also must love his wife. He must love her just as he loves himself. And a wife must respect her husband.

Ett liv i kärlek

1 Handla alltså på samma sätt som Gud och förlåt varandra, eftersom ni är hans älskade barn. 2 Älska varandra och låt Kristus vara er förebild. Han älskade oss ju så mycket att han gav sitt eget liv för att befria oss från synden. Och denna gåva var ett offer som gladde Gud. 3 Bland er får det aldrig förekomma sexuell lössläppthet och annan omoral eller girighet. Tänk på att ni tillhör Gud! 4 Snuskiga historier, dumt prat och elaka skämt passar inte bland er. Tacka istället Gud tillsammans. 5 Ni måste ha klart för er en sak: ingen som ägnar sig åt sexuell lössläppthet och annan omoral eller girighet får tillhöra Kristus eller Guds eget folk, för allt detta är att tillbe avgudar. 6 Låt er inte luras av dem som säger att dessa handlingar inte är synd, för Gud kommer att döma alla som inte lyder honom. 7 Delta aldrig i det som dessa människor ägnar sig åt. 8 Förut levde ni i andligt mörker, men nu lever ni i ljuset, i gemenskap med Herren Jesus. Låt därför era liv visa att ni tillhör ljuset. 9 Om ljuset får förvandla er, kommer ni att göra det som är gott och enligt Guds vilja, och hålla er till sanningen. 10 Fråga er alltid vad Gud vill att ni ska göra. 11 De människor som lever i andligt mörker, gör det som är ont. Ha därför inget med deras onda och meningslösa handlingar att göra, utan avslöja dem istället. 12 Vad dessa människor har för sig i hemlighet, är så avskyvärt att man inte ens kan tala om det. 13 Men när ljuset får lysa på det, avslöjas synden, 14 för ljuset avslöjar allt. Det är därför vi brukar säga: ”Vakna, du som sover, stå upp från de döda, så ska Kristus låta dig leva i ljuset.”^[1] 15 Var alltså noga med hur ni lever. Lev inte som dårar, utan som visa människor. 16 Ta vara på de möjligheter ni har att göra gott, för den tid vi lever i är ond. 17 Handla inte tanklöst, utan försök att förstå vad Herren Jesus vill. 18 Drick er inte fulla på alkohol, för det leder till ett vilt och omoraliskt liv. Låt er istället fyllas av Guds Ande, 19 och uppmuntra varandra genom att sjunga lovsånger till Herren Jesus. Ja, sjung både nya och gamla sånger till hans ära.^[2] Sjung och spela av hela hjärtat! 20 Och tacka alltid Gud, vår Far, för allt som vår Herre Jesus Kristus har gjort för oss.

Råd angående gifta par

21 Båda parterna i ett äktenskap måste sätta den andre före sig själv, för genom detta ärar ni Jesus Kristus. 22 Ni gifta kvinnor måste sätta er man före er själva, på samma sätt som ni sätter Herren Jesus först i era liv. 23 Mannen ska ju vara en ledare för sin fru, på samma sätt som Kristus är ledare och huvud för sin kropp, som är församlingen. Men kom ihåg att Kristus blev ledare genom att rädda dem som tillhör hans kropp. 24 Och på samma sätt som församlingen sätter Kristus först, måste en gift kvinna i allt sätta sin man före sig själv. 25 Ni gifta män måste å andra sidan visa er fru lika mycket kärlek och omsorg som Kristus visade församlingen. Kristus gav ju till och med sitt liv för församlingen, 26 så att den genom budskapet om honom kunde tvättas ren och få tillhöra Gud. 27 Han ville låta församlingen stå där inför Gud full av härlighet, och utan minsta fläck eller skrynkla, utan synd och brist. 28 På samma sätt måste en man älska sin fru som om hon vore hans egen kropp. Den som älskar sin fru, älskar med andra ord sig själv. 29-30 Ingen hatar ju sin egen kropp, utan tar hand om den och ger den vad den behöver. På samma sätt tar Kristus hand om sin kropp, som är församlingen. Och i den kroppen är vi alla olika delar. 31 Det står i Skriften^[3]: ”Därför skaen man lämna sina föräldrar och hålla sig till sin fru, så att de två blir ett.” 32 Det ligger en stor hemlighet i detta, för enligt min mening är det en bild på förhållandet mellan Kristus och församlingen. 33 Men det handlar också om er som är gifta. Därför ska en man älska sin fru som sig själv, och frun ska visa sin man respekt.
