David doesn’t kill Saul when he has the chance

1 Saul returned from chasing the Philistines. Then he was told, ‘David is in the Desert of En Gedi.’ 2 So Saul took 3,000 of the best soldiers from the whole nation of Israel. He started out to look for David and his men. He planned to look near the Rocky Cliffs of the Wild Goats. 3 He came to some sheepfolds along the way. A cave was there. Saul went in to go to the toilet. David and his men were far back in the cave. 4 David’s men said, ‘This is the day the LORD told you about. He said to you, “I will hand your enemy over to you. Then you can deal with him as you want to.” ’ So David came up close to Saul without being seen. He cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. 5 Later, David felt sorry that he had cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. 6 He said to his men, ‘May the LORD keep me from doing a thing like that again to my master. He is the LORD’s anointed king. So I promise that I will never lay my hand on him. The LORD has anointed him.’ 7 David said that to correct his men. He wanted them to know that they should never suggest harming the king. He didn’t allow them to attack Saul. So Saul left the cave and went on his way. 8 Then David went out of the cave. He called out to Saul, ‘King Saul! My master!’ When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down. He lay down flat with his face towards the ground. 9 He said to Saul, ‘Why do you listen when men say, “David is trying to harm you”? 10 This day you have seen with your own eyes how the LORD handed you over to me in the cave. Some of my men begged me to kill you. But I didn’t. I said, “I will never lay my hand on my master. He is the LORD’s anointed king.” 11 Look, my father! Look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe. But I didn’t kill you. See, there is nothing in my hand that shows I am guilty of doing anything wrong. I haven’t turned against you. I haven’t done anything to harm you. But you are hunting me down. You want to kill me. 12 May the LORD judge between you and me. And may the LORD pay you back because of the wrong things you have done to me. But I won’t do anything to hurt you. 13 People say, “Evil acts come from those who do evil.” So I won’t do anything to hurt you. 14 ‘King Saul, who are you trying to catch? Who do you think you are chasing? I’m nothing but a dead dog or a flea! 15 May the LORD be our judge. May he decide between us. May he consider my case and stand up for me. May he show that I’m not guilty of doing anything wrong. May he save me from you.’ 16 When David finished speaking, Saul asked him a question. He said, ‘My son David, is that your voice?’ And Saul wept out loud. 17 ‘You are a better person than I am,’ he said. ‘You have treated me well. But I’ve treated you badly. 18 You have just now told me about the good things you did to me. The LORD handed me over to you. But you didn’t kill me. 19 Suppose a man finds his enemy. He doesn’t let him get away without harming him. May the LORD reward you with many good things. May he do it because of the way you treated me today. 20 I know for sure that you will be king. I know that the kingdom of Israel will be made secure under your control. 21 Now make a promise in the name of the LORD. Promise me that you won’t kill the children of my family. Also promise me that you won’t wipe out my name from my family line.’ 22 So David made that promise to Saul. Then Saul returned home. But David and his men went up to his usual place of safety.

1 David fortsatte sedan upp mot grottorna vid En-Gedi. 2 När Saul kom tillbaka från striden mot filisteerna, fick han reda på att David hade gått till En-Gedis öken. 3 Han valde ut tre tusen män bland hela Israel och gick för att söka efter honom vid Stenbocksklipporna. 4 På ett ställe, där vägen passerade några fårfållor, gick Saul in i en grotta för att göra sina behov. Det råkade vara just den plats dit David och hans män tagit sin tillflykt. 5 "Nu har tillfället kommit", viskade Davids män till honom. "Detta är vad Herren menade, när han sa: 'Jag ska ge Saul i din hand, så att du kan göra som du vill med honom!' " Då smög David sig fram och skar av en bit av Sauls mantel. 6 Men hans samvete började omedelbart oroa honom. 7 "Jag skulle inte ha gjort det", sa han till sina män. "Det är inte rätt att göra så mot Guds utvalde kung. Man ska inte lyfta sin hand mot Guds smorde!" 8-9 David höll tillbaka sina män och tillät inte att de dödade Saul. När Saul lämnat grottan och gått sin väg, kom David ut efter honom och ropade: "Min herre och min kung!" Och när Saul vände sig om, bugade sig David djupt inför honom. 10-11 Sedan ropade han till Saul: "Varför lyssnar du till dem som säger att jag försöker skada dig? I dag har du sett att det inte är sant. Herren gav dig i min hand där i grottan, och några av mina män tyckte att jag skulle döda dig, men jag skonade dig. Jag tänkte nämligen: 'Jag vill inte förgripa mig på Herrens utvalde kung.' 12 Kan du se vad jag har i min hand? Det är ena hörnet av din mantel! Jag skar av det, men jag dödade dig inte! Är inte detta bevis nog för att jag inte tänker skada dig, och att jag inte har syndat mot dig, även om du står efter mitt liv? 13 Herren får döma mellan oss. Kanske kommer han att döda dig för vad du har försökt göra mot mig, men jag tänker aldrig göra dig något illa. Ett gammalt ordspråk säger ju: 14 'Den som är ond gör vad ont är.' Därför vill inte jag röra dig. 15 Vem är det Israels kung försöker ta till fånga? Är det meningen att han ska använda sin tid till att jaga någon, som är lika farlig som en död hund och lika stark som en loppa? 16 Herren är vår domare, och han ska döma vem som har rätt och straffa den skyldige. Han är min försvarare, och han ska rädda mig undan dig!" 17 Saul ropade tillbaka: "Är det verkligen du, min son David?" Sedan började Saul gråta högt. 18 Han sa till David: "Du är en bättre människa än jag, för du har lönat ont med gott. 19 Ja, du har visat din storhet i dag, för när Herren gav mig i din hand, dödade du mig inte. 20 Vem låter sin fiende komma undan, när han har honom i sin makt? Herren ska belöna dig för den godhet du har visat mig i dag! 21 Nu inser jag att du kommer att bli kung och att Israel blir ditt rike. 22 Lova mig därför med en ed inför Herren, att du inte kommer att döda min familj och förgöra mina ättlingar." 23 David lovade Saul detta. Saul gick tillbaka hem, men David och hans män återvände till sin grotta.
