Das Wirken Johannes’ des Täufers

1 Es war im fünfzehnten Jahr der Regierung des Kaisers Tiberius; Pontius Pilatus war Gouverneur von Judäa, Herodes regierte als Tetrarch^[1] in Galiläa, sein Bruder Philippus^[2] in Ituräa und Trachonitis, Lysanias^[3] in Abilene; (Mt 3,1; Mk 1,1; Joh 1,6; Joh 1,19; Apg 13,1)

2 Hohepriester waren Hannas und Kajafas. Da bekam Johannes, der Sohn des Zacharias, in der Wüste von Gott seinen Auftrag.^[4] 3 Er durchzog die ganze Jordangegend und rief die Menschen dazu auf, umzukehren und sich taufen zu lassen, um Vergebung der Sünden zu empfangen^[5]. 4 So erfüllte sich, was im Buch^[6] des Propheten Jesaja steht: »Hört, eine Stimme ruft in der Wüste: ›Bereitet dem Herrn den Weg! Ebnet seine Pfade!‹ 5 Jedes Tal soll aufgefüllt und jeder Berg und jeder Hügel abgetragen werden. Krumme Wege müssen begradigt und holprige eben gemacht werden. 6 Und die ganze Welt^[7] soll das Heil^[8] sehen, das von Gott kommt.«^[9] 7 Die Menschen kamen^[10] in großer Zahl zu Johannes, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen. Doch er sagte zu ihnen: »Ihr Schlangenbrut! Wer hat euch auf den Gedanken gebracht, ihr könntet dem kommenden Gericht^[11] entgehen? 8 Bringt Früchte, die zeigen, dass es euch mit der Umkehr ernst ist^[12], und denkt nicht im Stillen: ›Wir haben ja Abraham zum Vater!‹ Ich sage euch: Gott kann Abraham aus diesen Steinen hier Kinder erwecken. 9 Die Axt ist schon an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt, und jeder Baum, der keine guten Früchte bringt, wird umgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.« 10 Da fragten ihn die Leute: »Was sollen wir denn tun?« 11 Johannes gab ihnen zur Antwort: »Wer zwei Hemden hat, soll dem eins geben, der keines hat. Und wer etwas zu essen hat, soll es mit dem teilen, der nichts hat.« 12 Auch Zolleinnehmer kamen, um sich taufen zu lassen; sie fragten ihn: »Meister, was sollen wir tun?« 13 Johannes erwiderte: »Verlangt nicht mehr von den Leuten, als festgesetzt ist.« 14 »Und wir«, fragten einige Soldaten, »was sollen wir denn tun?« Er antwortete: »Beraubt^[13] und erpresst niemand, sondern gebt euch mit eurem Sold zufrieden!« 15 Das Volk war voll Erwartung, und alle fragten sich, ob Johannes etwa der Messias^[14] sei. 16 Doch Johannes erklärte vor allen: »Ich taufe euch mit Wasser. Aber es kommt einer, der stärker ist als ich; ich bin es nicht einmal wert, ihm die Riemen seiner Sandalen zu lösen. Er wird euch mit^[15] dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen. 17 Er hat die Worfschaufel in der Hand, um die Spreu vom Weizen zu trennen^[16]. Den Weizen wird er in die Scheune bringen, die Spreu aber wird er in nie erlöschendem Feuer verbrennen.« 18 Mit diesen und noch vielen anderen ernsten^[17] Worten verkündete Johannes dem Volk die Botschaft ´Gottes`. 19 Er wies auch den Tetrarchen Herodes zurecht, weil dieser dem eigenen Bruder dessen Frau Herodias weggenommen hatte^[18]. Johannes hielt ihm außerdem all das Böse vor, das er ´sonst noch` getan hatte. 20 Da fügte Herodes allem begangenen Unrecht auch noch das hinzu, dass er Johannes ins Gefängnis werfen ließ.

Die Taufe Jesu

21 Unter all den vielen, die sich taufen ließen, war auch Jesus.^[19] Als er nach seiner Taufe betete, öffnete sich der Himmel, (Mt 3,13; Mk 1,9; Joh 1,32) 22 und der Heilige Geist kam in sichtbarer^[20] Gestalt wie eine Taube auf ihn herab. Und aus dem Himmel sprach eine Stimme: »Du bist mein geliebter Sohn, an dir habe ich Freude.^[21]« (Ps 2,7)

1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, 2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; 6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. 7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then? 11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise. 12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do? 13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you. 14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do?
