1Später brachen sie von Elim wieder auf. Am 15. Tag im zweiten Monat nach ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten erreichte die ganze Gemeinschaft der Israeliten die Wüste Sin, die zwischen Elim und dem ´Berg` Sinai liegt.2Dort in der Wüste begehrten sie alle gegen Mose und Aaron auf.3»Hätte der HERR uns doch lieber in Ägypten sterben lassen!«, schimpften sie. »Dort saßen wir wenigstens vor vollen Fleischtöpfen und konnten Brot essen, bis wir satt waren! Aber ihr habt uns von dort herausgeführt ´und` in diese Wüste ´geschleppt`, um uns alle zusammen verhungern zu lassen!«4Da sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Du wirst sehen: Ich werde für euch Brot vom Himmel regnen lassen. Die Israeliten sollen jeden Morgen vor das Lager hinausgehen und sammeln, was sie für den Tag brauchen ´– aber nicht mehr`. So stelle ich sie auf die Probe ´und sehe`, ob sie nach meinen Weisungen leben wollen oder nicht.5Wenn sie am sechsten Tag zubereiten, was sie gesammelt haben, wird sich herausstellen, dass es doppelt so viel ist wie an den anderen Tagen.«6Mose und Aaron sagten zu allen Israeliten: »Heute Abend werdet ihr erkennen, dass es der HERR war, der euch aus Ägypten herausgeführt hat,7und morgen früh werdet ihr sehen, wie herrlich er ist. ´Ihr werdet seine Herrlichkeit daran erkennen`, wie er eure Auflehnung gegen ihn beantwortet[1]. In Wirklichkeit begehrt ihr nämlich nicht gegen uns auf, wir sind unbedeutend.[2]«8Mose fuhr fort: »Er wird euch heute Abend Fleisch zu essen geben und morgen früh Brot, bis ihr satt seid. So beantwortet[3] er eure Auflehnung gegen ihn. Eure Vorwürfe richten sich ja nicht gegen uns – wir sind unbedeutend[4] –, sondern gegen den HERRN!«9Dann wandte sich Mose an Aaron und sagte zu ihm: »Befiehl der ganzen Gemeinschaft der Israeliten: ›Versammelt euch und tretet vor den HERRN! Denn er hat eure Vorwürfe gehört.‹«10Während Aaron diesen Befehl an alle Israeliten weitergab und die Leute sich mit Blick zur Wüste aufstellten[5], erschien ´dort` die Herrlichkeit des HERRN in der Wolke. (2Mo 13,21)11Der HERR sagte zu Mose:12»Ich habe die Vorwürfe der Israeliten gehört. Richte ihnen aus: ›Heute Abend könnt ihr Fleisch essen, und morgen früh werdet ihr Brot bekommen, bis ihr satt seid. Daran sollt ihr erkennen, dass ich der HERR, euer Gott, bin.‹«13Und so geschah es dann auch: Am Abend zogen Wachteln heran und bedeckten das ganze Lager. Am nächsten Morgen lag eine Tauschicht rings um das Lager,14und als der Tau verdunstet war, kamen auf dem Wüstenboden hauchzarte, körnige Gebilde zum Vorschein, so fein wie Raureif[6]. (4Mo 11,7)15Als die Israeliten sie entdeckten, fragten sie einander: »Was ist das denn?«[7] Sie konnten sich nicht erklären, was es damit auf sich hatte. Mose gab ihnen zur Antwort: »Das ist das Brot, das euch der HERR zum Essen gegeben hat.16Der HERR befiehlt euch: ›Sammelt davon so viel, dass jeder von euch genug zu essen hat. Pro Person, die in eurem Zelt lebt, sollt ihr einen Krug[8] voll nehmen.‹«17Die Israeliten gehorchten, wobei die einen mehr und die anderen weniger sammelten.18Und als sie ´die Menge` später mit dem Krug nachmaßen, ´zeigte sich`, dass diejenigen, die viel aufgelesen hatten, nicht zu viel, und diejenigen, die wenig aufgelesen hatten, nicht zu wenig hatten. Jeder hatte so viel gesammelt, wie er für sich ´und seine Familie` zum Essen benötigte.19Mose befahl ihnen: »Niemand darf etwas davon bis zum nächsten Morgen aufheben!«20Manche jedoch hörten nicht auf ihn, sondern bewahrten etwas bis zum anderen Tag auf. Doch am Morgen war es voller Maden und stank, und Mose war zornig über das Volk.21Jeden Morgen sammelten sie nun so viel, wie sie zum Essen brauchten. Der Rest, ´den sie liegen gelassen hatten`, zerschmolz, sobald die Sonnenhitze einsetzte.22Am sechsten Tag aber sammelten sie doppelt so viel wie sonst: zwei Krüge für jeden. Die Oberhäupter der Gemeinschaft gingen zu Mose und sprachen ihn darauf an.23Er gab zur Antwort: »Genau so hat es der HERR doch gesagt. Morgen wird der Ruhetag[9] gefeiert, ein heiliger Tag zu Ehren des HERRN. Backt oder kocht, was ihr heute gesammelt habt.[10] Und was ihr heute nicht esst[11], das bewahrt für morgen auf.«24Die Israeliten hoben das restliche Essen bis zum nächsten Tag auf, so wie Mose es angeordnet hatte. Diesmal fing es nicht an zu stinken, und keine Made war darin zu finden.25»Heute sollt ihr diese Reste essen«, befahl Mose, »denn heute ist Ruhetag. Dieser Tag gehört dem HERRN. Darum werdet ihr auch heute draußen nichts finden.26Sechs Tage lang könnt ihr Brot sammeln, aber am siebten Tag ist Ruhetag; dann wird nichts da sein.«27Als der siebte Tag gekommen war, gingen einige vom Volk trotzdem hinaus, um ´Brot` zu sammeln, aber tatsächlich fanden sie nichts.28Da sagte der HERR zu Mose: »Wie lange wollt ihr euch noch weigern, meine Gebote und Weisungen zu befolgen?29Begreift endlich, dass ´ich`, der HERR, euch den Ruhetag gegeben habe! Deshalb versorge ich euch am sechsten Tag mit so viel Brot, dass es für zwei Tage reicht. Am siebten Tag sollt ihr alle im Lager bleiben. Niemand darf es verlassen.«30So hielt das ganze Volk den siebten Tag als Ruhetag ein.31Die Israeliten nannten das Brot »Manna«[12]. Es war weiß wie Koriandersamen und schmeckte wie Honigkuchen.32Mose sagte ´zum Volk`: »Der HERR hat befohlen, dass ein Krug voll Manna für die kommenden Generationen aufbewahrt wird. So können sie die Speise sehen, die er euch in der Wüste zu essen gab, nachdem er euch aus Ägypten herausgeführt hatte.«33Dann wandte Mose sich an Aaron: »Nimm ein Gefäß und fülle es mit einer Tagesration Manna[13]! Bewahre es im Heiligtum auf, damit alle zukünftigen Generationen es sehen können.[14]«34So wie der HERR es Mose aufgetragen hatte, stellte Aaron ´später` das Gefäß zur Aufbewahrung vor die Bundeslade mit den Gesetzestafeln[15].35Vierzig Jahre lang ernährten sich die Israeliten von dem Manna, bis sie die Grenze des Landes Kanaan erreicht hatten.36Ein Krug[16] fasst ungefähr zwei Liter[17].

Das Manna — die wunderbare Nahrung des Volkes Gottes
15Und als es die Kinder Israels sahen, sprachen sie untereinander: Was ist das?, denn sie wussten nicht, was es war. Mose aber sprach zu ihnen: Dies ist das Brot, das euch der HERR zur Speise gegeben hat! (2Mo 16,4; 5Mo 8,3; 5Mo 8,16; Neh 9,15; Joh 6,31; Joh 6,58; 1Kor 10,3; Offb 2,17)16Das ist aber der Befehl, den der HERR gegeben hat: Jeder soll davon sammeln, so viel er zum Essen benötigt, einen Gomer je Kopf, nach der Zahl eurer Seelen; jeder nehme für die, die in seinem Zelt sind. (2Mo 16,18; 2Mo 16,33; 2Mo 16,36)17Und die Kinder Israels machten es so und sammelten, der eine viel, der andere wenig.18Als man es aber mit dem Gomer maß, da hatte der, welcher viel gesammelt hatte, keinen Überfluss, und der, welcher wenig gesammelt hatte, hatte keinen Mangel, sondern jeder hatte für sich gesammelt, so viel er zum Essen brauchte. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.5On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.’6So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, ‘In the evening you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of Egypt,7and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Moses said to them, ‘It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat.16This is what the Lord has commanded: “Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer[1] for each person you have in your tent.” ’17The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little.18And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.19Then Moses said to them, ‘No-one is to keep any of it until morning.’20However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.21Each morning everyone gathered as much as they needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away.22On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much – two omers[2] for each person – and the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses.23He said to them, ‘This is what the Lord commanded: “Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath to the Lord. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.” ’24So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it.25‘Eat it today,’ Moses said, ‘because today is a sabbath to the Lord. You will not find any of it on the ground today.26Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any.’27Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none.28Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘How long will you[3] refuse to keep my commands and my instructions?29Bear in mind that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where they are on the seventh day; no-one is to go out.’30So the people rested on the seventh day.31The people of Israel called the bread manna.[4] It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.32Moses said, ‘This is what the Lord has commanded: “Take an omer of manna and keep it for the generations to come, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt.” ’33So Moses said to Aaron, ‘Take a jar and put an omer of manna in it. Then place it before the Lord to be kept for the generations to come.’34As the Lord commanded Moses, Aaron put the manna with the tablets of the covenant law, that it might be preserved.35The Israelites ate manna for forty years, until they came to a land that was settled; they ate manna until they reached the border of Canaan.36(An omer is one-tenth of an ephah.)
