Er segnete ihn und schärfte ihm ein: »Ich will nicht, dass du eine Frau hier aus Kanaan heiratest!2Mach dich auf den Weg nach Mesopotamien zur Familie Betuëls, des Vaters deiner Mutter, und heirate dort eine Tochter deines Onkels Laban.3Der allmächtige Gott segne dich. Er mache dich fruchtbar und schenke dir viele Nachkommen. Eine ganze Schar von Völkern[1] soll von dir abstammen.4Gott lasse dir und deinen Nachkommen den Segen zuteilwerden, den Abraham damals von ihm empfangen hat. Ihr werdet das Land in Besitz nehmen, das Gott ihm versprochen hat, und in dem du jetzt noch als Gast lebst.«5Mit diesen Worten verabschiedete Isaak seinen Sohn. Jakob zog nach Mesopotamien zu Laban, dem Sohn des Aramäers Betuël. Laban war ein Bruder von Rebekka, der Mutter von Jakob und Esau.
Esau heiratet eine Tochter Ismaels
6Esau bekam mit, was geschehen war: Sein Vater hatte Jakob gesegnet und nach Mesopotamien geschickt, um sich dort eine Frau zu suchen. Bei dieser Gelegenheit hatte er ihm ausdrücklich verboten, eine Kanaaniterin zu heiraten.7Jakob hatte auf seine Eltern gehört und war nach Mesopotamien gegangen.8Da begriff Esau, dass sein Vater keine kanaanitischen Ehefrauen ´für seine Söhne` wollte.9Er ging zu ´seinem Onkel` Ismael und heiratete dessen Tochter Mahalat. Mahalat war eine Schwester Nebajots und Enkelin Abrahams. Sie wurde Esaus dritte Frau neben den beiden Kanaaniterinnen.
Jakob träumt von einer Himmelstreppe
10Jakob hatte sich von Beerscheba auf den Weg nach Haran gemacht.11Als die Sonne unterging, blieb er an dem Ort, wo er gerade war, um zu übernachten. Er nahm einen der Steine, die dort herumlagen, wälzte ihn ans Kopfende seines Lagers[2] und legte sich schlafen.12Im Traum sah er eine Treppe, die von der Erde bis zum Himmel reichte. Engel Gottes stiegen auf ihr hinauf und herunter.13Oben an der Treppe stand der HERR[3] und sagte: »Ich bin der HERR, der Gott deines Großvaters Abraham und der Gott Isaaks. Das Land ´Kanaan`, auf dessen Erde du gerade liegst, will ich dir und deinen Nachkommen geben.14Sie werden so unzählbar sein wie der Staub der Erde und sich nach allen Seiten ausbreiten – nach West und Ost, nach Nord und Süd. Durch dich und deine Nachkommen sollen alle Völker[4] der Erde gesegnet werden[5].15Ich bin bei dir und behüte dich, wohin du auch gehst. Ich bringe dich zurück in dieses Land. Nie werde ich dich im Stich lassen, sondern alles wahr machen, was ich dir versprochen habe.[6]«16Da wachte Jakob auf und rief aus: »Wahrhaftig – der HERR ist an diesem Ort, und ich habe es nicht gewusst!«17Er fürchtete sich und sagte: »Vor diesem Ort muss man Ehrfurcht haben! Hier ist eine Wohnstätte Gottes und ein Tor zum Himmel!«18Am nächsten Morgen stand Jakob früh auf. Er nahm den Stein, der an seinem Kopfende[7] gelegen hatte, stellte ihn als Gedenkstein auf und goss Öl darüber, ´um ihn Gott zu weihen`.19Er nannte die Stelle Bet-El (»Haus Gottes«). - ´Dieser Name ging später auch auf die nahe gelegene Ortschaft über`, die vorher Lus hieß. -20Dann legte Jakob ein Gelübde ab: »Wenn der HERR[8] mir beisteht«, sagte er, »wenn er mich auf dieser Reise beschützt, wenn er mir Nahrung und Kleidung gibt,21und wenn ich wohlbehalten nach Hause[9] zurückkehre, dann soll er mein Gott sein.22Diese Stelle, an der ich den Gedenkstein aufgestellt habe, soll zu einem heiligen Ort werden, wo Gott verehrt und angebetet wird[10]. Und von allem, was du, ´HERR`, mir schenken wirst, werde ich dir stets den zehnten Teil geben.«

Esaus dritte Frau
6Als nun Esau sah, dass Isaak den Jakob gesegnet und ihn nach Paddan-Aram entlassen hatte, damit er sich von dort eine Frau hole, und dass er, als er ihn segnete, ihm gebot und sprach: »Du sollst keine Frau von den Töchtern Kanaans nehmen«,7und dass Jakob seinem Vater und seiner Mutter gehorsam war und nach Paddan-Aram zog, (2Mo 20,12; Spr 1,8; Spr 30,17; Eph 6,1)8als Esau auch sah, dass Isaak, sein Vater, die Töchter Kanaans nicht gerne sah, (1Mo 26,34)9da ging Esau hin zu Ismael und nahm zu seinen Frauen noch Mahalath als Frau hinzu, die Tochter Ismaels, des Sohnes Abrahams, die Schwester Nebajoths. Jakobs Traum von der Himmelsleiter
10Jakob aber zog von Beerscheba aus und wanderte nach Haran. (1Mo 11,31; 1Mo 24,10; 1Mo 27,43)11Und er kam an einen Ort, wo er über Nacht blieb; denn die Sonne war untergegangen. Und er nahm von den Steinen jenes Orts und legte sie unter sein Haupt und legte sich an dem Ort schlafen. (1Mo 31,46; Mt 8,20)12Und er hatte einen Traum; und siehe, eine Leiter war auf die Erde gestellt, die reichte mit der Spitze bis an den Himmel. Und siehe, auf ihr stiegen die Engel Gottes auf und nieder. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.3May God Almighty[2] bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples.4May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now reside as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.’5Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.6Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, ‘Do not marry a Canaanite woman,’7and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram.8Esau then realised how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac;9so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.
Jacob’s dream at Bethel
10Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran.11When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.12He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.13There above it[3] stood the Lord, and he said: ‘I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.14Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.[4]15I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.’16When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.’17He was afraid and said, ‘How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.’18Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it.19He called that place Bethel,[5] though the city used to be called Luz.20Then Jacob made a vow, saying, ‘If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear21so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord[6] will be my God22and[7] this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.’
