1Ahab erzählte Isebel alles, was Elia getan und wie er sämtliche Propheten ´Baals` getötet hatte.2Da schickte Isebel einen Boten zu Elia und drohte ihm: »Die Strafe der Götter soll mich treffen, wenn ich dich bis morgen um diese Zeit nicht genauso umgebracht habe, wie du ´meine Propheten` umgebracht hast.«3Da packte Elia die Angst.[1] Er ergriff die Flucht und lief um sein Leben, bis er nach Beerscheba ´im äußersten Süden` des Königsreichs Juda kam. Dort ließ er seinen Diener zurück4und ging alleine weiter in die Wüste. Als er eine Tagesreise weit gekommen war, setzte er sich unter einen Ginsterstrauch und wünschte den Tod herbei. »Es ist genug, HERR«, sagte er. »Lass mich sterben. Ich bin nicht besser als meine Vorfahren[2].«5Dann legte er sich unter den Ginsterstrauch und schlief ein. Doch plötzlich wurde er geweckt.[3] Ein Engel berührte ihn und sagte: »Steh auf und iss!«6Elia schlug die Augen auf und entdeckte neben seinem Kopf ein frisch gebackenes[4] Fladenbrot und einen Krug mit Wasser. Er aß und trank und legte sich wieder schlafen.7´Einige Zeit später` berührte der Engel des HERRN ihn ein zweites Mal und sagte wieder: »Steh auf und iss! Du hast einen weiten Weg vor dir.«8Elia stand auf und aß und trank. Das Essen gab ihm Kraft, vierzig Tage lang[5] zu wandern, bis er den Berg Gottes, den Horeb, erreichte.
Gott begegnet Elia am Berg Horeb
9Elia ging dort in die Höhle, um zu übernachten. Da sprach plötzlich der HERR zu ihm. »Was machst du hier, Elia?«, fragte er.10»HERR«, erwiderte Elia, »ich habe mich leidenschaftlich für dich, den allmächtigen Gott, eingesetzt. Die Israeliten haben den Bund gebrochen, den du mit ihnen geschlossen hattest. Sie haben deine Altäre niedergerissen und deine Propheten umgebracht. Ich bin der einzige, der übrig geblieben ist. Und nun trachten sie auch mir nach dem Leben.«11»Komm aus der Höhle und tritt vor mich hin!«[6], forderte der HERR ihn auf. »Ich werde ´an dir` vorübergehen.«[7] Zuerst zog ein gewaltiger Sturm vorbei[8], der ganze Felsbrocken aus dem Berg riss und sie zerschmetterte. Aber der HERR war nicht in dem Sturm. Nach dem Sturm bebte die Erde, aber auch im Erdbeben war der HERR nicht.12Nach dem Erdbeben kam ein Feuer, doch auch im Feuer war der HERR nicht. Nach dem Feuer war ein sanftes Flüstern zu hören.[9]13Als Elia es wahrnahm, verhüllte er sein Gesicht mit seinem Mantel und trat hinaus vor den Eingang der Höhle. Eine Stimme fragte ihn: »Was machst du hier, Elia?«14»HERR«, erwiderte er, »ich habe mich leidenschaftlich für dich, den allmächtigen Gott, eingesetzt. Die Israeliten haben den Bund gebrochen, den du mit ihnen geschlossen hattest. Sie haben deine Altäre niedergerissen und deine Propheten umgebracht. Ich bin der einzige, der übrig geblieben ist. Und nun trachten sie auch mir nach dem Leben.«15»Geh den Weg durch die Wüste wieder zurück«, befahl der HERR. » ´Begib dich` nach Damaskus und salbe dort Hasaël zum König über die Aramäer.16Dann salbe Jehu, den Enkel Nimschis[10], zum König über Israel und Elisa, den Sohn Schafats aus Abel-Mehola, zu deinem Nachfolger als Prophet. (2Kön 9,2)17Hasaël wird mein Gericht an den Israeliten vollziehen; wer ihm entkommt, an dem wird Jehu das Gericht vollziehen. Und wer sich vor Jehu retten kann, der wird durch Elisa umkommen.[11]18Aber ich werde dafür sorgen, dass in Israel siebentausend Menschen am Leben bleiben – alle, die[12] nicht vor Baal niedergekniet sind und sein Bild nicht geküsst haben.«
Elia beruft Elisa zu seinem Nachfolger
19Elia verließ den Berg Horeb und machte sich auf den Weg zu Elisa. Der war gerade dabei, mit ´seinen Arbeitern und` zwölf Ochsengespannen die Felder zu pflügen. Elf Gespanne arbeiteten vor ihm. Er selbst führte das zwölfte. Elia trat zu ihm, warf ihm seinen Prophetenmantel über und ging weiter.[13]20Elisa ließ sein Gespann stehen, rannte hinter Elia her und bat ihn: »Erlaube mir, mich zuerst noch von meinen Eltern zu verabschieden[14]. Danach gehe ich mit dir.« »Du kannst dich zu Hause verabschieden«, erwiderte Elia, »aber vergiss nicht, wozu ich dich berufen habe.«21Elisa ging nach Hause[15] und brachte die Rinder, mit denen er gearbeitet hatte, als Opfer dar. Mit dem Holz ihres Jochs machte er ein Feuer, kochte darüber das Fleisch und aß es mit seinen Leuten. Dann ging er mit Elia und wurde sein Diener.

So nimm nun, HERR, mein Leben, denn ich bin nicht besser als meine Väter! (4Mo 11,15; Jon 4,3; Jon 4,8)5Und er legte sich und schlief ein unter dem Ginsterstrauch. Und siehe, ein Engel rührte ihn an und sprach zu ihm: Steh auf und iss! (Mt 6,8; Mt 6,25; Apg 12,7; Hebr 1,14)6Und als er sich umsah, siehe, da war bei seinem Kopf ein auf heißen Steinen gebackener Brotfladen und ein Krug Wasser. Der Herr begegnet Elia am Berg Horeb
7Und der Engel des HERRN kam zum zweiten Mal und rührte ihn an und sprach: Steh auf und iss, denn der Weg ist [sonst] zu weit für dich! (5Mo 1,31; Ps 119,1; Jes 42,16)8Und er stand auf und aß und trank, und er ging in der Kraft dieser Speise 40 Tage und 40 Nächte lang, bis an den Berg Gottes, den Horeb. Elisa wird zum Nachfolger Elias berufen
19Und er ging von dort hinweg und fand Elisa, den Sohn Saphats; der pflügte mit zwölf Joch Rindern vor sich her, und er selbst war beim zwölften. Und Elia ging zu ihm und warf seinen Mantel über ihn. (2Mo 3,1; Ri 6,11; 2Kön 1,8; 2Kön 2,8; 2Kön 2,13; Am 7,14)20Er aber verließ die Rinder und lief Elia nach und sprach: Lass mich noch meinen Vater und meine Mutter küssen, dann will ich dir nachfolgen! Er aber sprach zu ihm: Geh hin [und] kehre wieder zurück! Denn was habe ich dir getan? (Lk 9,59)21Da wandte er sich von ihm und nahm ein Joch Rinder und opferte sie und kochte das Fleisch mit dem Geschirr der Rinder und gab es dem Volk, dass sie aßen; dann machte er sich auf und folgte Elia nach und diente ihm. 1Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.2So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, ‘May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.’3Elijah was afraid[1] and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there,4while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. ‘I have had enough, Lord,’ he said. ‘Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.’5Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat.’6He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.7The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.’8So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he travelled for forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
The Lord appears to Elijah
9There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the Lord came to him: ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’10He replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.’11The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.12After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.13When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, ‘What are you doing here, Elijah?’14He replied, ‘I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.’15The Lord said to him, ‘Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.16Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.17Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.18Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel – all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.’
The call of Elisha
19So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him.20Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. ‘Let me kiss my father and mother goodbye,’ he said, ‘and then I will come with you.’ ‘Go back,’ Elijah replied. ‘What have I done to you?’21So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the ploughing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his servant.
