1Dann rief Jesus seine zwölf Jünger zu sich und gab ihnen Vollmacht, böse Geister auszutreiben und alle Kranken und Leidenden[1] zu heilen. (Mk 3,13; Lk 6,12; Lk 9,1)2Die Namen der zwölf Apostel sind: Simon, auch Petrus genannt, an erster Stelle, und sein Bruder Andreas; Jakobus, der Sohn des Zebedäus, und sein Bruder Johannes;3Philippus und Bartholomäus; Thomas und Matthäus, der Zolleinnehmer; Jakobus, der Sohn des Alphäus, und Thaddäus[2];4Simon, der Zelot[3], und Judas Iskariot, der Jesus verriet.
Der Auftrag der Apostel
5Diese Zwölf sandte Jesus mit folgendem Auftrag aus: »Setzt euren Fuß nicht auf heidnisches Gebiet und betretet keine samaritanische Stadt, (Mk 6,7; Lk 9,2; Lk 10,4)6sondern geht zu den verlorenen Schafen des Volkes[4] Israel.7Geht und verkündet: ›Das Himmelreich ist nahe.‹8Heilt Kranke, weckt Tote auf, macht Aussätzige rein, treibt Dämonen aus. Was ihr umsonst bekommen habt, das gebt umsonst weiter.9Steckt euch kein Gold[5], kein Silber und kein Kupfergeld in euren Gürtel;10´besorgt euch` auch keine Vorratstasche für unterwegs, kein zweites Hemd, keine Sandalen[6] und keinen Wanderstab. Denn wer arbeitet, hat Anrecht auf seinen Lebensunterhalt.11Wenn ihr in eine Stadt oder in ein Dorf kommt, dann sucht jemand, der es wert ist, ´euch aufzunehmen`. Bleibt bei ihm, bis ihr jenen Ort wieder verlasst.12Wenn ihr das Haus betretet, grüßt die Bewohner ´und wünscht ihnen Frieden`.13Sind sie es wert, so soll der Frieden, den ihr bringt, bei ihnen einziehen[7]. Sind sie es jedoch nicht wert, so soll euer Frieden zu euch zurückkehren.14Wenn man euch nicht aufnimmt und sich eure Botschaft nicht anhören will, dann verlasst jenes Haus oder jene Stadt und schüttelt den Staub von euren Füßen.15Ich sage euch: Sodom[8] und Gomorra wird es am Tag des Gerichts noch erträglich gehen im Vergleich zu solch einer Stadt.«
Gefahren und Anforderungen des Auftrags
16»Seht, ich sende euch wie Schafe mitten unter die Wölfe. Seid darum klug wie die Schlangen und ohne Falsch wie die Tauben. (Mk 13,9; Lk 12,2; Lk 12,11; Lk 21,12)17Nehmt euch in Acht vor den Menschen! Sie werden euch in ihren Synagogen vor Gericht stellen und auspeitschen.[9]18Man wird euch um meinetwillen vor Machthaber und Könige führen, und ihr sollt vor ihnen und vor allen Völkern[10] meine Zeugen sein.19Wenn man euch vor Gericht stellt[11], dann macht euch keine Sorgen, wie ihr reden und was ihr sagen sollt. Denn wenn es so weit ist, wird euch eingegeben, was ihr sagen müsst.20Nicht ihr seid es, die dann reden, sondern der Geist eures Vaters wird durch euch reden.21Menschen werden ihre nächsten Angehörigen dem Henker ausliefern: der Bruder den Bruder[12] und der Vater sein Kind; und auch Kinder werden sich gegen ihre Eltern stellen und sie töten lassen.22Um meines Namens willen werdet ihr von allen Menschen gehasst werden. Wer aber bis ans Ende standhaft bleibt, wird gerettet.23Wenn man euch in der einen Stadt verfolgt, dann flieht in eine andere! Ich sage euch: Noch bevor ihr mit den Städten Israels zu Ende seid, wird der Menschensohn kommen.24Ein Jünger steht nicht über seinem Meister und ein Diener nicht über seinem Herrn.25Der Jünger muss zufrieden sein, wenn es ihm ergeht wie seinem Meister, und der Diener, wenn es ihm ergeht wie seinem Herrn. Hat man schon den Hausherrn Beelzebul[13] genannt, dann wird man seine Leute[14] erst recht so nennen.26Fürchtet euch also nicht vor den Menschen! Denn nichts, was verborgen ist, bleibt verborgen; alles wird offenbart werden. Und nichts, was geheim ist, bleibt geheim; alles wird bekannt gemacht werden.27Was ich euch im Dunkeln sage, das sagt am hellen Tag weiter, und was euch ins Ohr geflüstert wird, das verkündet in aller Öffentlichkeit[15].28Fürchtet euch nicht vor denen, die den Leib töten ´können` – die Seele können sie nicht töten. Fürchtet vielmehr den, der Leib und Seele dem Verderben in der Hölle preisgeben kann.29Denkt doch einmal an die Spatzen! Zwei von ihnen kosten nicht mehr als einen Groschen, und doch fällt kein einziger Spatz auf die Erde, ohne dass euer Vater es zulässt[16].30Und bei euch sind sogar die Haare auf dem Kopf alle gezählt.31Seid darum ohne Furcht! Ihr seid mehr wert als eine noch so große Menge Spatzen.32Wer sich vor den Menschen zu mir bekennt, zu dem werde auch ich mich vor meinem Vater im Himmel bekennen.33Wer mich aber vor den Menschen verleugnet, den werde auch ich vor meinem Vater im Himmel verleugnen.«
Bedingungen der Nachfolge
34»Denkt nicht, ich sei gekommen, um Frieden auf die Erde zu bringen. Ich bin nicht gekommen, um Frieden zu bringen, sondern das Schwert. (Lk 12,51; Lk 14,26; Lk 17,33)35Ich bin gekommen, um ›den Sohn[17] mit seinem Vater zu entzweien, die Tochter mit ihrer Mutter und die Schwiegertochter mit ihrer Schwiegermutter;36die eigenen Angehörigen werden zu Feinden‹.37Wer Vater oder Mutter mehr liebt als mich, ist es nicht wert, mein Jünger zu sein[18], und wer Sohn oder Tochter mehr liebt als mich, ist es nicht wert, mein Jünger zu sein.38Wer nicht sein Kreuz auf sich nimmt und mir nachfolgt, ist es nicht wert, mein Jünger zu sein.39Wer sein Leben erhalten[19] will, wird es verlieren; wer aber sein Leben um meinetwillen verliert, wird es finden.«
Der Lohn derer, die den Boten Jesu helfen
40»Wer euch aufnimmt, nimmt mich auf, und wer mich aufnimmt, nimmt den auf, der mich gesandt hat. (Mk 9,41; Lk 10,16)41Wer einen Propheten aufnimmt, weil er ein Prophet ist, wird den Lohn eines Propheten erhalten. Wer einen Gerechten aufnimmt, weil er ein Gerechter ist, wird den Lohn eines Gerechten erhalten.42Und wer einem von diesen gering Geachteten[20] auch nur einen Becher kaltes Wasser zu trinken gibt, einfach weil er ´mein` Jünger ist, der wird – das versichere ich euch – nicht ohne Lohn bleiben[21].«
1Jesus called for his 12 disciples to come to him. He gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every illness and disease.2Here are the names of the 12 apostles. First there were Simon Peter and his brother Andrew. Then came James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John.3Next were Philip and Bartholomew, and also Thomas and Matthew the tax collector. Two more were James, son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus.4The last were Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot. Judas was the one who was later going to hand Jesus over to his enemies.5Jesus sent these 12 out with the following orders. ‘Do not go among the Gentiles,’ he said. ‘Do not enter any town of the Samaritans.6Instead, go to the people of Israel. They are like sheep that have become lost.7As you go, preach this message, “The kingdom of heaven has come near.”8Heal those who are ill. Bring those who are dead back to life. Make those who have skin diseases “clean” again. Drive out demons. You have received freely, so give freely.9‘Do not get any gold, silver or copper to take with you in your belts.10Do not take a bag for the journey. Do not take extra clothes or sandals or walking sticks. A worker should be given what he needs.11When you enter a town or village, look for someone who is willing to welcome you. Stay at their house until you leave.12As you enter the home, greet those who live there.13If that home welcomes you, give it your blessing of peace. If it does not, don’t bless it.14Some people may not welcome you or listen to your words. If they don’t, leave that home or town, and shake the dust off your feet.15What I’m about to tell you is true. On judgment day it will be easier for Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.16‘I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. So be as wise as snakes and as harmless as doves.17Watch out! You will be handed over to the local courts. You will be whipped in the synagogues.18You will be brought to governors and kings because of me. You will be witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.19But when they arrest you, don’t worry about what you will say or how you will say it. At that time you will be given the right words to say.20It will not be you speaking. The Spirit of your Father will be speaking through you.21‘Brothers will hand over brothers to be killed. Fathers will hand over their children. Children will rise up against their parents and have them put to death.22You will be hated by everyone because of me. But anyone who remains strong in the faith will be saved.23When people attack you in one place, escape to another. What I’m about to tell you is true. You will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.24‘The student is not better than the teacher. A slave is not better than his master.25It is enough for students to be like their teachers. And it is enough for slaves to be like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, what can the others who live there expect?26‘So don’t be afraid of your enemies. Everything that is secret will be brought out into the open. Everything that is hidden will be uncovered.27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight. What is whispered in your ear, shout from the rooftops.28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but can’t kill the soul. Instead, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell.29Aren’t two sparrows sold for only a penny? But not one of them falls to the ground outside your Father’s care.30He even counts every hair on your head!31So don’t be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.32‘What if someone says in front of others that they know me? I will also say in front of my Father who is in heaven that I know them.33But what if someone says in front of others that they don’t know me? I will say in front of my Father who is in heaven that I don’t know them.34‘Do not think that I came to bring peace to the earth. I didn’t come to bring peace. I came to bring a sword.35I have come to turn ‘ “sons against their fathers. Daughters will refuse to obey their mothers. Daughters-in-law will be against their mothers-in-law.36A man’s enemies will be the members of his own family.” (Mi 7,6)37‘Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. Anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.38Whoever does not pick up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.39Whoever finds their life will lose it. Whoever loses their life because of me will find it.40‘Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me. And anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.41Suppose someone welcomes a prophet as a prophet. They will receive a prophet’s reward. And suppose someone welcomes a godly person as a godly person. They will receive a godly person’s reward.42Suppose someone gives even a cup of cold water to a little one who follows me. What I’m about to tell you is true. That person will certainly be rewarded.’
