1Es waren nur noch zwei Tage bis zum Fest des Passa und der ungesäuerten Brote. Die führenden Priester und die Schriftgelehrten überlegten, zu welcher List sie greifen könnten, um Jesus festzunehmen und dann umzubringen. (Mt 26,3; Lk 22,1)2»Auf keinen Fall darf es während des Festes geschehen«, sagten sie, »sonst gibt es einen Aufruhr im Volk.«
Die Salbung in Betanien
3Jesus war in Betanien bei Simon dem Aussätzigen zu Gast[1]. Während der Mahlzeit kam eine Frau mit einem Alabastergefäß voll echtem, kostbarem Nardenöl. Sie zerbrach das Gefäß[2] und goss Jesus das Öl über den Kopf. (Mt 26,6; Joh 12,1)4Einige der Anwesenden waren empört. »Was soll das, dieses Öl so zu verschwenden?«, sagten sie zueinander.5»Man hätte es für mehr als dreihundert Denare verkaufen und das Geld den Armen geben können!« Und sie machten der Frau heftige Vorwürfe.6Aber Jesus sagte: »Lasst sie! Warum macht ihr es der Frau so schwer? Sie hat ein gutes Werk an mir getan.7Arme wird es immer bei euch geben, und ihr könnt ihnen Gutes tun, sooft ihr wollt. Mich aber habt ihr nicht mehr lange bei euch[3].8Sie hat getan, was sie konnte: Sie hat meinen Körper im Voraus für mein Begräbnis gesalbt.9Ich sage euch: Überall in der Welt, wo man das Evangelium verkünden wird, wird man sich auch an sie erinnern und von dem reden, was sie getan hat.«
Judas wird zum Verräter
10Danach ging Judas Iskariot, einer der Zwölf, zu den führenden Priestern und bot ihnen an, dafür zu sorgen, dass sie Jesus in ihre Gewalt bringen konnten[4]. (Mt 26,14; Lk 22,4)11Die führenden Priester waren erfreut, als sie das hörten, und versprachen Judas dafür Geld. Von da an suchte er nach einer günstigen Gelegenheit, Jesus an sie zu verraten.
Vorbereitung des Passamahls
12Am ersten Tag des Festes der ungesäuerten Brote – an dem Tag, an dem man das Passalamm schlachtet – fragten die Jünger Jesus: »Wo sollen wir das Passamahl für dich vorbereiten?« (Mt 26,17; Lk 22,7)13Er gab zwei von ihnen den Auftrag: »Geht in die Stadt! Dort werdet ihr einem Mann begegnen, der einen Wasserkrug trägt.[5] Folgt ihm,14bis er in ein Haus hineingeht, und sagt dort zu dem Hausherrn: ›Der Meister lässt fragen: Wo ist der Raum für mich, in dem ich mit meinen Jüngern das Passamahl feiern kann?‹15Er wird euch ein großes Zimmer im Obergeschoss zeigen, das ´mit Sitzpolstern[6]` ausgestattet und für das Festmahl hergerichtet ist. Bereitet dort das Passa für uns vor.«16Die beiden Jünger machten sich auf den Weg. In der Stadt angekommen, fanden sie alles so, wie Jesus es ihnen gesagt hatte, und bereiteten das Passamahl vor.
Der Verräter
17Als es Abend geworden war, kam Jesus mit den Zwölf. (Mt 26,20)18Während sie bei Tisch waren und aßen, erklärte er: »Ich sage euch: Einer von euch wird mich verraten – einer, der hier mit mir isst.«19Die Jünger waren bestürzt, und einer nach dem anderen fragte ihn: »Doch nicht etwa ich?« –20»Es ist einer von euch zwölf«, erwiderte er, »einer, der mit mir ´das Brot` in die Schüssel taucht.21Der Menschensohn[7] geht zwar den Weg, der ihm in der Schrift vorausgesagt ist; doch wehe dem Menschen, durch den er verraten wird! Für diesen Menschen wäre es besser, er wäre nie geboren worden.«
Einsetzung des Abendmahls
22Im weiteren Verlauf des Essens nahm Jesus Brot[8], dankte Gott dafür[9], brach es in Stücke und gab es den Jüngern mit den Worten: »Nehmt, das ist mein Leib.« (Mt 26,26; Lk 22,17)23Dann nahm er einen[10] Becher ´mit Wein`, sprach ein[11] Dankgebet, gab ihn den Jüngern, und sie tranken alle daraus.24Er sagte zu ihnen: »Das ist mein Blut, das Blut des Bundes[12], das für viele vergossen wird. (Lk 22,20)25Ich sage euch: Ich werde nicht mehr vom Saft der Reben trinken bis zu dem Tag, an dem ich den neuen Wein[13] trinken werde im Reich Gottes.«26Nachdem sie dann ein[14] Loblied gesungen hatten, gingen sie hinaus an den Ölberg.
Jesus kündigt an, dass Petrus ihn verleugnen wird
27Jesus sagte zu seinen Jüngern: »Ihr werdet euch alle von mir abwenden.[15] Denn es heißt in der Schrift: ›Ich werde den Hirten töten, und die Schafe werden sich zerstreuen.‹[16] (Mt 26,31; Lk 22,31; Joh 13,38)28Aber nach meiner Auferstehung werde ich euch nach Galiläa vorausgehen.«29Doch Petrus versicherte: »Auch wenn alle sich von dir abwenden – ich nicht!«30Jesus erwiderte: »Ich sage dir: Noch heute Nacht, bevor der Hahn zweimal kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen.«31Aber Petrus erklärte mit aller Entschiedenheit: »Und wenn ich mit dir sterben müsste – ich werde dich niemals verleugnen!« Das Gleiche beteuerten auch alle anderen.
In Getsemane
32Jesus und seine Jünger kamen an eine Stelle ´am Ölberg`, die Getsemane heißt. Dort sagte er zu ihnen: »Setzt euch hier und wartet, bis ich gebetet habe!« (Mt 26,36; Lk 22,39)33Petrus, Jakobus und Johannes jedoch nahm er mit. Von Angst und Grauen gepackt,34sagte er zu ihnen: »Meine Seele ist zu Tode betrübt.[17] Bleibt hier und wacht!«35Er selbst ging noch ein paar Schritte weiter, warf sich zu Boden und bat Gott, die Leidensstunde, wenn es möglich wäre, an ihm vorübergehen zu lassen.36»Abba[18], Vater«, sagte er, »alles ist dir möglich. Lass diesen bitteren Kelch an mir vorübergehen! Aber nicht wie ich will, sondern wie du willst.«37Als er zu den Jüngern zurückkam, schliefen sie. Da sagte er zu Petrus: »Simon, du schläfst? Konntest du nicht einmal eine einzige Stunde wach bleiben?38Wacht und betet, damit[19] ihr nicht in Versuchung geratet! Der Geist ist willig, aber die menschliche Natur[20] ist schwach.«39Jesus ging wieder weg und betete noch einmal dasselbe.40Als er zurückkam, waren sie wieder eingeschlafen; sie konnten die Augen vor Müdigkeit nicht offen halten und wussten nicht, was sie ihm antworten sollten.41Als er das dritte Mal zurückkam, sagte er: »Wollt ihr noch länger schlafen und euch ausruhen?[21] Es ist so weit![22] Die Stunde ist gekommen; jetzt wird der Menschensohn in die Hände der Sünder gegeben.42Steht auf, lasst uns gehen! Der, der mich verrät, ist da.«
Die Gefangennahme Jesu
43Noch während Jesus redete, kam Judas, einer der Zwölf, mit einer Schar von Männern, die mit Schwertern und Knüppeln bewaffnet waren. Sie waren von den führenden Priestern, den Schriftgelehrten und den Ältesten geschickt worden. (Mt 26,47; Lk 22,47; Joh 18,3; Joh 18,10)44Der Verräter[23] hatte mit seinen Begleitern ein Zeichen vereinbart: »Der, den ich mit einem Kuss begrüßen werde[24], der ist es. Den müsst ihr festnehmen und abführen; sorgt dafür, dass er nicht entkommen kann[25]!«45´In Getsemane` angelangt, ging Judas sofort auf Jesus zu. »Rabbi!«, sagte er und gab ihm einen Kuss[26].46Da packten die Männer Jesus und nahmen ihn fest.47Doch einer von denen, die bei Jesus standen, zog sein Schwert, ging damit auf den Diener des Hohenpriesters los und schlug ihm ein Ohr ab.48Jesus aber sagte zu den Männern: »Mit Schwertern und Knüppeln seid ihr ausgezogen, um mich gefangen zu nehmen, als wäre ich ein Verbrecher[27].49Dabei war ich doch Tag für Tag bei euch im Tempel und lehrte, und ihr habt mich nicht festgenommen. Aber was in der Schrift vorausgesagt ist, muss sich erfüllen.«50Da ließen ihn alle im Stich und flohen.51Ein junger Mann allerdings folgte Jesus; er trug nur einen leinenen Umhang auf dem bloßen Leib. Doch als man ihn festnehmen wollte,52ließ er den Umhang fahren und rannte nackt davon.
Jesus vor dem Hohen Rat
53Jesus wurde zum Hohenpriester gebracht, wo auch alle führenden Priester und alle Ältesten und Schriftgelehrten zusammenkamen[28]. (Mt 26,57; Lk 22,54; Lk 22,63; Joh 18,12; Joh 18,19)54Petrus folgte Jesus in einiger Entfernung bis in den Innenhof des hohepriesterlichen Palastes. Dort setzte er sich zu den Dienern und wärmte sich am Feuer.55Die führenden Priester und der gesamte Hohe Rat suchten nun nach einer Zeugenaussage gegen Jesus, die es rechtfertigen würde, ihn zum Tod zu verurteilen[29]; doch sie konnten nichts finden.56Viele brachten zwar falsche Anschuldigungen gegen ihn vor, aber ihre Aussagen stimmten nicht überein.57Einige falsche Zeugen, die gegen ihn auftraten, behaupteten:58»Wir haben ihn sagen hören: ›Ich werde diesen Tempel, der von Menschenhand erbaut wurde, niederreißen und in drei Tagen einen anderen errichten, der nicht von Menschenhand erbaut ist.‹«59Doch auch in diesem Fall stimmten die Aussagen der Zeugen nicht überein.60Da erhob sich der Hohepriester, trat in die Mitte und fragte Jesus: »Hast du darauf nichts zu sagen? ´Wie stellst du dich zu dem[30],` was diese Leute gegen dich vorbringen?«61Aber Jesus schwieg und gab keine Antwort. Der Hohepriester wandte sich noch einmal an ihn und fragte: »Bist du der Messias[31], der Sohn des Hochgelobten?« –62»Ich bin es«, erwiderte Jesus, »und ihr werdet den Menschensohn an der rechten Seite des Allmächtigen[32] sitzen und auf[33] den Wolken des Himmels kommen sehen[34].[35]« (Ps 110,1)63Da zerriss der Hohepriester ´vor Empörung` sein Gewand und rief: »Wozu brauchen wir noch Zeugen?64Ihr habt die Gotteslästerung gehört. Was ist eure Meinung?« Alle erklärten, er sei schuldig und müsse sterben.65Einige begannen, Jesus anzuspucken; sie verhüllten ihm das Gesicht, schlugen ihn mit Fäusten[36] und sagten: »Du bist doch ein Prophet! Sag uns, wer es war!«[37] Auch die Diener ´des Hohen Rates` schlugen ihn[38].
Petrus verleugnet Jesus
66Während sich Petrus unten im Hof aufhielt, kam eine von den Dienerinnen des Hohenpriesters. (Mt 26,69; Lk 22,56; Joh 18,15; Joh 18,25)67Als sie Petrus bemerkte, der sich am Feuer wärmte, blickte sie ihn an und sagte: »Du warst doch auch mit diesem Jesus von Nazaret zusammen!«68Aber Petrus stritt es ab. »Ich weiss nicht, wovon du redest; ich verstehe gar nicht, was du willst«, sagte er und ging hinaus in den Vorhof. Da krähte ein Hahn.[39]69Als die Dienerin ihn dort wieder sah, wandte sie sich zu denen, die in der Nähe standen, und sagte noch einmal: »Der da ist einer von ihnen!«70Petrus stritt es wieder ab. Doch es dauerte nicht lange, da fingen auch die Umstehenden an: »Natürlich gehörst du zu ihnen, du bist doch auch ein Galiläer!«71Petrus begann, Verwünschungen auszustoßen, und schwor: »Ich kenne diesen Menschen nicht, von dem ihr redet!«72In diesem Augenblick krähte der Hahn zum zweiten Mal. Da erinnerte sich Petrus daran, wie Jesus zu ihm gesagt hatte: »Bevor der Hahn zweimal kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen.« Und er brach in Tränen aus.[40]
1The Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away. The chief priests and the teachers of the law were plotting to arrest Jesus secretly. They wanted to kill him.2‘But not during the feast,’ they said. ‘The people may stir up trouble.’3Jesus was in Bethany. He was at the table in the home of Simon, who had a skin disease. A woman came with a special sealed jar. It contained very expensive perfume made out of pure nard. She broke the jar open and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head.4Some of the people there became angry. They said to one another, ‘Why waste this perfume?5It could have been sold for more than a year’s pay. The money could have been given to poor people.’ So they found fault with the woman.6‘Leave her alone,’ Jesus said. ‘Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.7You will always have poor people with you. You can help them any time you want to. But you will not always have me.8She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body to prepare me to be buried.9What I’m about to tell you is true. What she has done will be told anywhere the good news is preached all over the world. It will be told in memory of her.’10Judas Iscariot was one of the 12 disciples. He went to the chief priests to hand Jesus over to them.11They were delighted to hear that he would do this. They promised to give Judas money. So he watched for the right time to hand Jesus over to them.
The Last Supper
12It was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. That was the time to sacrifice the Passover lamb. Jesus’ disciples asked him, ‘Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover meal?’13So he sent out two of his disciples. He told them, ‘Go into the city. A man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him.14He will enter a house. Say to its owner, “The Teacher asks, ‘Where is my guest room? Where can I eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ ”15He will show you a large upstairs room. It will have furniture and will be ready. Prepare for us to eat there.’16The disciples left and went into the city. They found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover meal.17When evening came, Jesus arrived with the 12 disciples.18While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. One of you who is eating with me will hand me over to my enemies.’19The disciples became sad. One by one they said to him, ‘Surely you don’t mean me?’20‘It is one of you,’ Jesus replied. ‘It is the one who dips bread into the bowl with me.21The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands over the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.’22While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to his disciples and said, ‘Take it. This is my body.’23Then he took a cup. He gave thanks and handed it to them. All of them drank from it.24‘This is my blood of the covenant,’ he said to them. ‘It is poured out for many.25What I’m about to tell you is true. I won’t drink wine with you again until the day I drink it in God’s kingdom.’26Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus says that the disciples will turn away
27‘You will all turn away,’ Jesus told the disciples. ‘It is written, ‘ “I will strike the shepherd down. Then the sheep will be scattered.” (Sach 13,7)28But after I rise from the dead, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.’29Peter said, ‘All the others may turn away. But I will not.’30‘What I’m about to tell you is true,’ Jesus answered. ‘It will happen today, in fact tonight. Before the cockerel crows twice, you yourself will say three times that you don’t know me.’31But Peter would not give in. He said, ‘I may have to die with you. But I will never say I don’t know you.’ And all the others said the same thing.
Jesus prays in Gethsemane
32Jesus and his disciples went to a place called Gethsemane. Jesus said to them, ‘Sit here while I pray.’33He took Peter, James and John along with him. He began to be very upset and troubled.34‘My soul is very sad. I feel close to death,’ he said to them. ‘Stay here. Keep watch.’35He went a little further. Then he fell to the ground. He prayed that, if possible, the hour might pass by him.36‘Abba, Father,’ he said, ‘everything is possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want.’37Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. ‘Simon’, he said to Peter, ‘are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?38Watch and pray. Then you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.’39Once more Jesus went away and prayed the same thing.40Then he came back. Again he found them sleeping. They couldn’t keep their eyes open. They did not know what to say to him.41Jesus returned the third time. He said to them, ‘Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look! The Son of Man is about to be handed over to sinners.42Get up! Let us go! Here comes the one who is handing me over to them!’
Jesus is arrested
43Just as Jesus was speaking, Judas appeared. He was one of the 12 disciples. A crowd was with him. They were carrying swords and clubs. The chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders had sent them.44Judas, who was going to hand Jesus over, had arranged a signal with them. ‘The one I kiss is the man,’ he said. ‘Arrest him and have the guards lead him away.’45So Judas went to Jesus at once. Judas said, ‘Rabbi!’ And he kissed Jesus.46The men grabbed Jesus and arrested him.47Then one of those standing nearby pulled his sword out. He struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.48‘Am I leading a band of armed men against you?’ asked Jesus. ‘Do you have to come out with swords and clubs to capture me?49Every day I was with you. I taught in the temple courtyard, and you didn’t arrest me. But the Scriptures must come true.’50Then everyone left him and ran away.51A young man was following Jesus. The man was wearing nothing but a piece of linen cloth. When the crowd grabbed him,52he ran away naked. He left his clothing behind.
Jesus is taken to the Sanhedrin
53The crowd took Jesus to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders, and the teachers of the law came together.54Not too far away, Peter followed Jesus. He went right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards. He warmed himself at the fire.55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for something to use against Jesus. They wanted to put him to death. But they did not find any proof.56Many witnesses lied about him. But their stories did not agree.57Then some of them stood up. Here is what those false witnesses said about him.58‘We heard him say, “I will destroy this temple made by human hands. In three days I will build another temple, not made by human hands.” ’59But what they said did not agree.60Then the high priest stood up in front of them. He asked Jesus, ‘Aren’t you going to answer? What are these charges these men are bringing against you?’61But Jesus remained silent. He gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, ‘Are you the Messiah? Are you the Son of the Blessed One?’62‘I am’, said Jesus. ‘And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One. You will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven.’63The high priest tore his clothes. ‘Why do we need any more witnesses?’ he asked.64‘You have heard him say a very evil thing against God. What do you think?’ They all found him guilty and said he must die.65Then some began to spit at him. They blindfolded him. They hit him with their fists. They said, ‘Prophesy!’ And the guards took him and beat him.
Peter says he does not know Jesus
66Peter was below in the courtyard. One of the high priest’s female servants came by.67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. ‘You also were with Jesus, that Nazarene,’ she said.68But Peter said he had not been with him. ‘I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,’ he said. He went out to the entrance to the courtyard.69The servant saw him there. She said again to those standing around, ‘This fellow is one of them.’70Again he said he was not. After a little while, those standing nearby said to Peter, ‘You must be one of them. You are from Galilee.’71Then Peter began to curse. He said to them, ‘I don’t know this man you’re talking about!’72Right away the cockerel crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had spoken to him. ‘The cockerel will crow twice,’ he had said. ‘Before it does, you will say three times that you don’t know me.’ Peter broke down and cried.
