Das südliche Bergland wird erobert, aber nicht die Ebenen

1 Nachdem Josua gestorben war, fragten die Israeliten den HERRN: »Welcher Stamm soll als Erster in den Kampf ziehen und die Kanaaniter angreifen?« 2 Der HERR antwortete: »Juda soll beginnen. Ich habe das Land in seine Gewalt gegeben.« 3 ´Die Männer von` Juda baten ihren Bruderstamm Simeon: »Kommt mit in unser Gebiet und helft uns, gegen die Kanaaniter zu kämpfen. Danach gehen wir mit euch ´und helfen euch`.« Da schloss sich der Stamm Simeon dem Stamm Juda an. 4 So zogen die Männer von Juda ´in ihr Gebiet`, und der HERR gab die Kanaaniter und die Perisiter in ihre Gewalt. Bei ´der Stadt` Besek schlugen sie ´ein Heer von` 10.000 Mann. 5 Sie stießen dort auf ´den König` Adoni-Besek, kämpften gegen ihn und besiegten ´ihn und sein Heer von` Kanaanitern und Perisitern. 6 Adoni-Besek ergriff die Flucht, aber die Männer von Juda jagten ihm nach. Sie nahmen ihn gefangen und hackten ihm die Daumen und die großen Zehen ab. 7 Da sagte er: »Siebzig Königen habe ich die Daumen und die großen Zehen abhacken lassen, ´und sie mussten von den Resten leben`, die ´sie` unter meinem Tisch auflasen. Jetzt zahlt Gott mir heim, was ich ihnen angetan habe.« Man brachte ihn nach Jerusalem. Dort starb er. 8 Die Männer von Juda griffen auch Jerusalem an und nahmen es ein. Sie töteten die Bewohner mit dem Schwert und steckten die Stadt in Brand. 9 Danach zog der Stamm Juda weiter Richtung Süden^[1] und bekämpfte die Kanaaniter, die im ´südlichen` Bergland, in der Wüste Negev und im Hügelland wohnten. 10 Zunächst griffen sie die Kanaaniter in Hebron an, das früher Kirjat-Arba hieß. Dort besiegten sie ´die drei Anakiter` Scheschai, Ahiman und Talmai. 11 Dann zogen sie vor die Stadt Debir, die früher Kirjat-Sefer genannt wurde, um gegen sie zu kämpfen. 12 Damals versprach ´der judäische Heerführer` Kaleb: »Wer die Stadt einnimmt, dem gebe ich meine Tochter Achsa zur Frau.« 13 Otniël, der Sohn von Kalebs jüngerem Bruder Kenas^[2], eroberte die Stadt und bekam dafür Kalebs Tochter Achsa zur Frau. 14 Als Achsa ´am Hochzeitstag` zu Otniël geführt wurde, drängte sie ihn^[3], von ihrem Vater Kaleb ein Stück Land zu erbitten. Sie stieg von ihrem Esel, und Kaleb fragte sie: »Was hast du?« 15 Sie antwortete: »Gib mir ´ein Abschiedsgeschenk als Zeichen für` deinen Segen. Du hast mich in das ´trockene` Südland verheiratet, darum gib mir wenigstens ein paar Wasserquellen.« Da schenkte Kaleb ihr eine Wasserstelle mit zwei Quellen, einer oberen und einer unteren. 16 Einige Sippen der Keniter, die von Moses Schwiegervater ´Jitro` abstammten^[4], verließen die Oasenstadt Tamar^[5] und zogen mit dem Stamm Juda in die judäische Wüste. In der Wüste Negev bei Arad ließen sie sich nieder und lebten dort zusammen mit der ´ortsansässigen` Bevölkerung.^[6] (Ri 4,11; 1Sam 15,6) 17 Der Stamm Juda zog nun mit seinem Bruderstamm Simeon weiter, und sie besiegten die Kanaaniter, die in Zefat wohnten. Sie vollstreckten den Bann an ihnen und töteten die gesamte Bevölkerung. Die Stadt benannten sie in »Horma«^[7] um. 18 Außerdem eroberten die Männer von Juda die Städte Gaza, Aschkelon und Ekron mit den dazugehörigen Gebieten.^[8] 19 Der HERR stand ihnen bei. Deshalb nahmen sie das ´ganze` Bergland in Besitz. Die Ebenen allerdings konnten sie nicht erobern, denn deren Bewohner besaßen eiserne Streitwagen^[9]. 20 Die Stadt Hebron wurde Kaleb zugesprochen, wie Mose es angeordnet hatte. Kaleb vertrieb von dort die drei Anakiter ´mit ihren Sippen`. 21 Der Stamm Benjamin dagegen vertrieb die Jebusiter, die in Jerusalem wohnten, nicht. Bis heute leben dort die Jebusiter zusammen mit den Benjaminitern.

Der Norden Kanaans wird nur teilweise erobert

22 Nun zogen auch die Josefsstämme ´Efraim und Manasse` in den Kampf. Sie wollten Bet-El erobern, und der HERR stand ihnen bei. 23 Sie schickten Leute, um die Stadt auszukundschaften. – Früher hieß der Ort nicht Bet-El sondern Lus. – 24 Die Kundschafter sahen einen Mann, der die Stadt verließ. Sie sagten zu ihm: »Wenn du uns zeigst, wie wir in die Stadt hineinkommen, werden wir dich verschonen.« 25 Er zeigte ihnen einen ´unbewachten` Zugang, und sie eroberten die Stadt und töteten alle Einwohner mit dem Schwert^[10]. Nur den Mann und seine Familie ließen sie gehen. 26 Er zog ins Gebiet der Hetiter und gründete dort eine ´neue` Stadt, die er ´ebenfalls` Lus nannte. So heißt sie bis heute. 27 Der Stamm Manasse vertrieb die Bewohner der Städte Bet-Schean und Taanach und ihrer Tochterstädte nicht, auch nicht die Bewohner von Dor, Jibleam und Megiddo und deren Tochterstädten. So gelang es den Kanaanitern, dort wohnen zu bleiben. 28 Selbst als das Volk Israel stärker wurde, zwangen sie die Kanaaniter lediglich zur Fronarbeit und vertrieben sie nicht aus dem Land. 29 Der Stamm Efraim vertrieb die Kanaaniter nicht, die in Geser lebten, und nahm die Stadt nicht in Besitz. Die Kanaaniter blieben dort wohnen, mitten unter den Efraimitern. 30 Der Stamm Sebulon vertrieb die Einwohner von Kitron und Nahalal nicht und nahm ihr Gebiet nicht in Besitz. ´Auch hier` blieben die Kanaaniter mitten unter ihnen wohnen und wurden ´später` zur Fronarbeit gezwungen. 31 ´Die Leute vom Stamm` Ascher vertrieben weder die Bewohner der Städte Akko und Sidon noch die Bewohner von Achleb^[11], Achsib, Helba, Afek und Rehob. (Jos 19,29) 32 Sie ließen sich mitten unter den Kanaanitern, die dort wohnten, nieder, anstatt das Land selbst in Besitz zu nehmen. 33 ´Genauso auch die Leute vom` Stamm Naftali: Sie vertrieben die Bewohner von Bet-Schemesch und Bet-Anan nicht und nahmen das Land nicht in Besitz, sondern ließen sich mitten unter den Kanaanitern, die dort wohnten, nieder. ´Später` zwangen sie die Bevölkerung von Bet-Schemesch und Bet-Anan zur Fronarbeit. 34 Der Stamm Dan wurde von den Amoritern in die Berge hinaufgedrängt. Die Amoriter ließen nicht zu, dass die Daniter sich in der Ebene ansiedelten, 35 sondern behaupteten ihre Niederlassungen in Har-Heres, Ajalon und Schaalbim. ´Später` allerdings gewannen die Josefsstämme ´Manasse und Efraim` die Oberhand über die Amoriter und zwangen sie zur Fronarbeit. 36 Die Grenze des amoritischen Gebiets verlief vom Skorpionenpass nach Sela^[12] und dann weiter in derselben Richtung^[13].

1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them? 2 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand. 3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him. 4 And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men. 5 And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites. 6 But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. 7 And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died. 8 Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire. 9 And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley. 10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai. 11 And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher: 12 And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife. 13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb' younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife. 14 And it came to pass, when she came to him , that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou? 15 And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs. 16 And the children of the Kenite, Moses'father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people. 17 And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah. 18 Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof. 19 And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. 20 And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak. 21 And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day. 22 And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them. 23 And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.) 24 And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy. 25 And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family. 26 And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day. 27 Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land. 28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out. 29 Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them. 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries. 31 Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob: 32 But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out. 33 Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them. 34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley: 35 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries. 36 And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
