1 Der Krieg zwischen den Anhängern König Sauls und den Anhängern König Davids zog sich lange hin. Mit der Zeit wurde David immer mächtiger, während das Königshaus Sauls an Stärke und Einfluss verlor.

Davids Familie in Hebron

2 In Hebron wurden folgende Söhne Davids geboren: der älteste hieß Amnon, seine Mutter war Ahinojam aus Jesreel; 3 der zweite hieß Kilab, seine Mutter war Abigajil, die Witwe Nabals aus Karmel; der dritte hieß Abschalom, seine Mutter war Maacha, eine Tochter des Königs Talmai von Geschur; 4 der vierte hieß Adonija, seine Mutter war Haggit; der fünfte hieß Schefatja, seine Mutter war Abital; 5 der sechste hieß Jitream, seine Mutter war Davids Frau Egla. Diese Söhne Davids wurden in Hebron geboren.

Isch-Boschet und sein Heerführer Abner geraten in Streit

6 Während des Krieges zwischen den Anhängern König Sauls und den Anhängern König Davids wurde Abner für das Königshaus Sauls immer unentbehrlicher. 7 Saul hatte eine Nebenfrau namens Rizpa gehabt, eine Tochter Ajas. Eines Tages stellte Isch-Boschet Abner zur Rede und fragte: »Warum hast du mit der Nebenfrau meines Vaters geschlafen?« 8 Darüber wurde Abner sehr zornig, und er fuhr Isch-Boschet an: »Was glaubst du eigentlich, wer ich bin? Ein mieser Verräter, der zum Stamm Juda hält?^[1] Bis heute tue ich, was ich kann, für das Königshaus ´deines Vaters` Saul, für seine Verwandten und für seine Freunde. Ich habe dich davor bewahrt, David in die Hände zu fallen - und da wirfst du mir diese Frauengeschichte vor? 9 Gott soll mich strafen, wenn ich nicht dafür sorge, dass genau das eintrifft, was er David geschworen hat: 10 ´Er hat angekündigt`, Sauls Familie das Königtum wegzunehmen und David zum König über Israel und Juda zu machen - von Dan ´im Norden` bis Beerscheba ´im Süden`.« 11 Da bekam Isch-Boschet solche Angst vor Abner, dass er kein Wort mehr herausbrachte.

Abner verhandelt mit David

12 Abner schickte auf der Stelle Boten zu David und ließ ihm ausrichten: »Wem anders als dir steht die Herrschaft über Israel zu?^[2] Ich mache dir einen Vorschlag: Schließ ein Bündnis mit mir, und ich werde dir dazu verhelfen, dass ganz Israel dich als König anerkennt.« 13 David ließ ihm antworten: »Gut. Ich werde mich mit dir verbünden - aber unter einer Bedingung: Du darfst mir nur unter die Augen treten, wenn du meine Frau Michal, die Tochter Sauls, mitbringst. Sonst brauchst du gar nicht erst zu kommen.« 14 Gleichzeitig sandte David Boten zu Sauls Sohn Isch-Boschet mit dem Befehl: »Gib mir meine Frau Michal zurück! Ich habe für sie als Brautpreis hundert Vorhäute von Philistern bezahlt!« 15 Isch-Boschet ließ Michal von ihrem ´zweiten` Mann Paltiël^[3], dem Sohn Lajischs, wegholen. (1Sam 25,44) 16 Ihr Mann wollte sie nicht gehen lassen^[4] und lief weinend hinter ihr her bis nach Bahurim. Schließlich befahl Abner ihm: »Geh endlich zurück!« Da erst kehrte Paltiël um. 17 Abner hatte mit den führenden Männern Israels gesprochen und zu ihnen gesagt: »Ihr wolltet doch schon lange, dass David euer König wird. 18 Jetzt ist es Zeit zu handeln! Denn der HERR hat über David gesagt: ›Durch meinen Diener David will ich mein Volk Israel aus der Gewalt der Philister und aller seiner Feinde retten.‹« 19 Den führenden Männern des Stammes Benjamin hatte Abner dasselbe gesagt. Dann ging er nach Hebron, um David mitzuteilen, dass die Israeliten und der ganze Stamm Benjamin ihn als König haben wollten^[5]. 20 Eine Abordnung von zwanzig Männern begleitete ihn. Als sie in Hebron eintrafen, gab David ein Festessen für sie. 21 Danach sagte Abner zu David: »Ich gehe nun zurück und lasse ´die führenden Männer von` ganz Israel zusammenkommen. Du, mein Herr und König, solltest an dieser Versammlung teilnehmen. Sie werden ein Bündnis mit dir schließen, und du wirst König über das ganze Land sein, wie du es schon lange gewollt hast.« David verabschiedete Abner in Frieden und ließ ihn gehen.

Joabs Rache an Abner

22 Kurz darauf kehrte Joab mit Davids Soldaten von einem Streifzug zurück. Sie brachten reiche Beute mit. Abner befand sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht mehr bei David in Hebron; der König hatte ihn in Frieden verabschiedet, und er war gegangen. 23 Kaum war Joab mit seinem Heer ´in Hebron` angekommen, berichtete man ihm: »Abner, der Sohn Ners, war beim König, und der hat ihn im Guten gehen lassen.« 24 Da ging Joab zu König David und stellte ihn zur Rede: »Was hast du da getan? Abner ist bei dir gewesen, und du hast ihn wieder gehen lassen? 25 Du kennst doch Abner! Er ist nur gekommen, um dich zu täuschen! Er will dich ausspionieren^[6] und in Erfahrung bringen, was du vorhast.« 26 Joab ging von David fort und schickte Boten hinter Abner her. Sie holten ihn bei der Zisterne von Sira ein und brachten ihn dazu, mit ihnen zurückzukehren. David wusste nichts davon. 27 Als Abner in Hebron angekommen war, führte Joab ihn beiseite in den Innenraum des Stadttores, als wollte er etwas Vertrauliches mit ihm besprechen. Doch dann stieß er Abner plötzlich ´einen Dolch` in den Bauch und tötete ihn. So rächte sich Joab dafür, dass Abner seinen Bruder Asaël umgebracht hatte. 28 Als David davon erfuhr, sagte er: »Ich schwöre vor dem HERRN: Mich und mein Königshaus trifft auf ewig keine Schuld an Abners Tod! 29 Dafür ist Joab allein verantwortlich. Er und seine Familie sollen die Folgen tragen. Unter seinen Nachkommen soll es immer einige geben, die an ´krankhaftem` Ausfluss oder Aussatz leiden, an Krücken gehen^[7], gewaltsam umkommen oder hungern müssen.« 30 – Joab und Abischai hatten Abner umgebracht, weil er ihren Bruder Asaël in der Schlacht bei Gibeon getötet hatte. –

David trauert um Abner

31 David befahl Joab und den Männern, die bei ihm waren: »Zerreißt eure Kleider, legt Trauergewänder an und haltet die Totenklage um Abner!« ´Im Trauerzug` schritt David direkt hinter der Bahre her. 32 So bestatteten sie Abner in Hebron. Der König weinte laut an seinem Grab, und alle Versammelten weinten mit. 33 Dann stimmte David dieses Klagelied über Abner an: Warum musste Abner sterben, wie ein gemeiner Nichtsnutz stirbt? 34 Deine Hände waren nicht gefesselt, deine Füße lagen nicht in Ketten. Verbrechern fielst du in die Hände, heimtückisch wurdest du umgebracht.^[8] Da weinten alle noch mehr um Abner. 35 Später wollten die Leute David dazu bewegen, etwas zu essen. Aber der Tag war noch nicht vergangen, darum schwor er: »Gott soll mich strafen, wenn ich vor Sonnenuntergang auch nur einen Bissen Brot oder sonst etwas zu mir nehme!« 36 Die Leute sahen, wie David sich verhielt, und waren beeindruckt - wie überhaupt von allem, was der König tat. 37 Alle, die an diesem Tag dabei waren, erkannten, dass der König nichts mit dem Mord an Abner zu tun hatte. Auch in ganz Israel sprach es sich herum. 38 David sagte zu seinen Hofleuten: »Ihr wisst, dass heute ein großer und bedeutender Mann in Israel umgebracht wurde. 39 Ich bin zwar zum König gesalbt worden, aber ich besitze noch nicht genug Macht, um gegen ´Joab und Abischai`, die Söhne der Zeruja, vorzugehen. Möge der HERR den Schuldigen bestrafen, wie er es verdient hat!«

1 Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker. 2 And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; 3 And his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; 4 And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; 5 And the sixth, Ithream, by Eglah David' wife. These were born to David in Hebron. 6 And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul. 7 And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and Ishbosheth said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father' concubine? 8 Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ishbosheth, and said, Am I a dog' head, which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman? 9 So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the LORD hath sworn to David, even so I do to him; 10 To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beersheba. 11 And he could not answer Abner a word again, because he feared him. 12 And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also , Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee. 13 And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul' daughter, when thou comest to see my face. 14 And David sent messengers to Ishbosheth Saul' son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines. 15 And Ishbosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish. 16 And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned. 17 And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you: 18 Now then do it : for the LORD hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies. 19 And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin. 20 So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast. 21 And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace. 22 And, behold, the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace. 23 When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace. 24 Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone? 25 Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest. 26 And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not. 27 And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib , that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother. 28 And afterward when David heard it , he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner: 29 Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father' house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread. 30 So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle. 31 And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David himself followed the bier. 32 And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept. 33 And the king lamented over Abner, and said, Died Abner as a fool dieth? 34 Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. And all the people wept again over him. 35 And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down. 36 And all the people took notice of it , and it pleased them: as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people. 37 For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner. 38 And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel? 39 And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness.
