Der Herr will nicht mit seinem Volk ziehen

1 Der HERR forderte Mose auf: »Mach dich auf den Weg! Zieh mit dem Volk, das du aus Ägypten geführt hast, von hier fort. Geht in das Land, das ich Abraham, Isaak und Jakob mit einem Schwur als Besitz für ihre Nachkommen versprochen habe. 2 Ich werde einen Engel vor euch^[1] herschicken und die Kanaaniter, Amoriter, Hetiter, Perisiter, Hiwiter und Jebusiter vertreiben. 3 ´Zieht also los. Ihr kommt` in ein Land, das von Milch und Honig überfließt. Aber ich werde euch nicht begleiten, denn ihr seid ein so eigensinniges Volk, dass ich euch sonst unterwegs vernichten würde.« 4 Als das Volk diese schlechte Nachricht vernahm, trauerten sie, und keiner von ihnen legte mehr seinen Schmuck an. 5 Denn der HERR hatte Mose befohlen, den Israeliten auszurichten: »Ihr seid ein eigensinniges Volk! Wäre ich auf dem Weg ´ins Land` nur einen Augenblick in eurer Mitte, dann würde ich euch vernichten! Nehmt euren Schmuck ab. Dann werde ich mir überlegen, was ich mit euch tun werde.« 6 Darum trennten sich die Israeliten am Berg Horeb von ihrem Schmuck.

Die Begegnung mit Gott findet außerhalb des Lagers statt

7 Mose baute das Zelt, ´in dem er mit Gott redete`, jeweils in einiger Entfernung vom Lager der Israeliten auf. Er nannte es »Zelt der Begegnung«.^[2] Wer den HERRN befragen wollte, musste das Lager verlassen und zum »Zelt der Begegnung« hinausgehen. 8 Jedes Mal, wenn Mose dorthin ging, erhoben sich die Israeliten, stellten sich vor ihren Zelten auf und blickten Mose nach, bis er im »Zelt ´der Begegnung` « verschwunden war. 9 Sobald er es betrat, kam die Wolkensäule herab und blieb am Zelteingang stehen, während der HERR mit Mose redete. 10 Wenn die Israeliten sahen, dass die Wolkensäule ihren Platz am Eingang des Begegnungszeltes eingenommen hatte, erhoben sie sich alle und warfen sich am Eingang ihrer Zelte anbetend nieder. 11 Der HERR redete mit Mose von Angesicht zu Angesicht^[3] wie ein Mensch mit seinem Freund. Anschließend kehrte Mose wieder ins Lager zurück. Aber sein junger Diener Josua, der Sohn Nuns, blieb im Zelt der Begegnung.

Mose bittet Gott, sein Volk weiterhin zu begleiten

12 Mose sagte zum HERRN: »Du hast mir befohlen, dieses Volk ´in sein Land` zu führen, aber du hast mir nicht gesagt, wen du mit mir senden wirst. Dabei hast du mir doch versichert, dass du mich als deinen Vertrauten betrachtest^[4] und ich in deiner Gunst stehe. 13 Wenn ich wirklich deine Gunst gefunden habe, dann zeige mir, was du vorhast^[5], damit ich dich besser verstehe und du auch in Zukunft an mir Gefallen finden kannst. Bedenke auch, dass es sich bei den Israeliten um dein Volk handelt.« 14 Der HERR antwortete: »Ich selbst komme mit euch, du kannst beruhigt sein^[6].« 15 Mose erwiderte: »Wenn du nicht selbst mitgehst, dann führe uns gar nicht erst weg von hier. 16 Woran sollen die Menschen denn erkennen, dass du mir und deinem ´ganzen` Volk wohlgesinnt bist? Doch nur daran, dass du mit uns gehst! Was sonst sollte uns von allen anderen Völkern auf der Welt unterscheiden?« 17 Der HERR antwortete Mose: »Sei gewiss: Ich werde den Wunsch, den du geäußert hast, erfüllen. Denn du stehst in meiner Gunst und bist mein Vertrauter^[7].«

Gott verspricht Mose, dass er sich ihm offenbaren wird

18 Da bat Mose: »Lass mich deine Herrlichkeit sehen!« 19 Der HERR gab zur Antwort: »Ich werde in meiner ganzen Heiligkeit und Schönheit^[8] an dir vorüberziehen und meinen Namen ›der HERR‹ vor dir ausrufen.^[9] ´Ich bin derjenige`, der Gnade erweist, wem er Gnade erweisen will, und der Erbarmen zeigt, wem er Erbarmen zeigen will.« 20 Der HERR fügte hinzu: »Mein Gesicht darfst du nicht sehen, denn niemand, der mir ins Gesicht sieht, bleibt am Leben^[10]. 21 Stell dich hier auf diesen Felsen neben mich«, fuhr der HERR fort. 22 »Wenn meine Herrlichkeit an dir vorüberzieht, werde ich dich in einen Felsspalt stellen und meine Hand schützend über dich halten, bis ich vorbeigegangen bin. 23 Dann werde ich meine Hand wegnehmen, und du kannst mir nachschauen. Aber mein Gesicht darf niemand sehen.«

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it: 2 And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite: 3 Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way. 4 And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments. 5 For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee. 6 And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb. 7 And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp. 8 And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle. 9 And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the LORD talked with Moses. 10 And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door. 11 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle. 12 And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight. 13 Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people. 14 And he said, My presence shall go with thee , and I will give thee rest. 15 And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me , carry us not up hence. 16 For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth. 17 And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name. 18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory. 19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. 20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. 21 And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: 22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: 23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
