Die zehn Gebote

1 Dann redete Gott und verkündete die folgenden Gebote: 2 »Ich bin der HERR, dein Gott, der dich aus der Sklaverei^[1] in Ägypten befreit hat. 3 Du sollst keine anderen Götter neben mir haben. 4 Du sollst dir keine Götterbilder anfertigen, indem du etwas nachbildest^[2], das sich am Himmel, auf der Erde oder im Meer^[3] befindet. 5 Wirf dich nicht vor ihnen nieder und verehre sie nicht. Denn ich, der HERR, dein Gott, bin ein leidenschaftlicher Gott, der keinen neben sich duldet^[4]. Diejenigen, die mich ablehnen^[5], ziehe ich dafür^[6] zur Rechenschaft. Selbst ihre Nachkommen werden die Folgen noch bis in die dritte und vierte Generation spüren^[7]. (1Mo 29,30; 5Mo 19,11) 6 Aber denen, die mich lieben und nach meinen Geboten leben, tue ich Gutes^[8] über Tausende von Generationen^[9]. 7 Du sollst den Namen des HERRN, deines Gottes, nicht missbrauchen^[10]. Denn der HERR wird niemand ungestraft lassen, der seinen Namen missbraucht. 8 Du sollst den Ruhetag^[11] einhalten^[12] und als heiligen Tag achten. (1Mo 2,2; 2Mo 31,16) 9 Du hast sechs Tage, an denen du all deine Arbeit verrichten kannst. 10 Aber der siebte Tag ist ein Ruhetag^[13], der dem HERRN, deinem Gott, gehört. ´An diesem Tag` sollst du nicht arbeiten. ´Das gilt` auch ´für` deine Söhne und Töchter, deine Knechte und Mägde, dein Vieh und die Ausländer, die bei dir leben^[14]. 11 Denn der HERR schuf den Himmel, die Erde und das Meer mit allen Lebewesen, die sie bevölkern, in sechs Tagen, und am siebten Tag ruhte er. Darum segnete der HERR den Ruhetag^[15] und erklärte ihn für heilig. 12 Du sollst deinen Vater und deine Mutter ehren^[16]. Dann wirst du lange in dem Land leben, das der HERR, dein Gott, dir gibt. 13 Du sollst nicht morden. 14 Du sollst nicht die Ehe brechen. 15 Du sollst nicht stehlen. 16 Du sollst keine falsche Aussage über deinen Mitmenschen machen. 17 Du sollst nicht begehren, was deinem Mitmenschen gehört^[17]. Gib der Begierde ´danach` keinen Raum^[18], ganz gleich, ob es sich um seine Frau, seine Knechte und Mägde, seine Rinder und Esel oder um irgend etwas anderes handelt.«

Mose soll zwischen Gott und dem Volk vermitteln

18 Das ganze Volk erlebte mit, wie es blitzte und donnerte, wie das Widderhorn erklang, und wie der Berg rauchte. Sie zitterten vor Angst^[19] und blieben in sicherem Abstand stehen. 19 »Sprich du mit uns!«, baten sie Mose. »Wir werden auf dich hören. Aber Gott soll nicht mit uns sprechen, sonst sterben wir.« 20 »Habt keine Angst!«, sagte Mose zum Volk. »Gott ist gekommen, um ´eure Herzen` zu prüfen. Er will, dass ihr euer Leben lang Ehrfurcht vor ihm habt^[20], damit ihr nicht sündigt.« 21 Das Volk blieb in der Ferne stehen, während Mose sich der dunklen Wolke näherte, in der Gott war.

Anweisungen für den Bau eines Altars

22 Der HERR sagte zu Mose: »Richte den Israeliten aus: ›Ihr habt miterlebt, wie ich vom Himmel her zu euch geredet habe. 23 Stellt keine Götterfiguren aus Silber und Gold her, die ihr neben mir auch noch verehrt.^[21] 24 Errichtet stattdessen einen Altar aus ´aufgeschütteter` Erde für mich. Auf ihm sollt ihr eure Brand- und Gemeinschaftsopfer darbringen, eure Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder. Ich werde Orte bestimmen, an denen man meinen Namen verehrt. An all diesen Stätten könnt ihr mir opfern, und ich werde euch nahe sein und euch segnen.^[22] 25 Wenn ihr mir jedoch einen Altar aus Steinen bauen wollt, dann verwendet nur unbehauene Steine! Denn sobald ihr sie mit einem Meißel bearbeitet, habt ihr sie entweiht. 26 Zu einem Altar, der mir geweiht ist, dürfen keine Stufen hinaufführen, damit nicht beim Hinaufsteigen die Scham des Priesters entblößt wird^[23].‹«

1 And God spake all these words, saying, 2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: 10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is , and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. 12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. 13 Thou shalt not kill. 14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. 15 Thou shalt not steal. 16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. 18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it , they removed, and stood afar off. 19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. 20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. 21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was . 22 And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. 23 Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold. 24 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee. 25 And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. 26 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.
