Die Philister erbeuten die Bundeslade

1 In ganz Israel hörte man auf das, was Samuel zu sagen hatte.^[1] ´In dieser Zeit` zogen die Israeliten in den Krieg gegen die Philister. Sie schlugen ihr Lager bei Eben-Eser auf. Die Philister lagerten bei Afek 2 und rückten gegen Israel vor. Nach einem langen und erbitterten Kampf besiegten sie die Israeliten und töteten auf dem Schlachtfeld etwa viertausend Mann. 3 Als das ´israelitische` Heer wieder ins Kriegslager zurückkehrte, fragten die führenden Männer: »Warum hat der HERR uns das angetan, dass wir heute die Schlacht gegen die Philister verloren haben? Lasst uns die Bundeslade des HERRN aus Schilo holen! Dann ist Gott mitten unter uns und rettet uns aus der Hand unserer Feinde!« 4 So schickten sie ´einige Männer` nach Schilo. Sie sollten die Bundeslade holen, über deren Kerub-Engeln der HERR, der allmächtige Gott, thronte. Elis beide Söhne Hofni und Pinhas begleiteten die Lade. 5 Als die Bundeslade im Heerlager ankam, brachen die Israeliten in so lautes Jubelgeschrei aus, dass davon die Erde dröhnte. 6 Die Philister hörten das Geschrei und fragten: »Was ist denn im Lager der Hebräer los?« Als sie herausfanden, dass die Lade des HERRN eingetroffen war, 7 bekamen sie es mit der Angst zu tun. »Ihr Gott ist zu ihnen ins Lager gekommen!«, riefen sie. »Weh uns! So etwas hat es noch nie gegeben! 8 Weh uns! Wer wird uns vor diesem mächtigen Gott retten? Das ist doch derselbe Gott, der^[2] die Ägypter mit vielen Strafgerichten in der Wüste vernichtend geschlagen hat! 9 Auf, ihr Philister, fasst Mut! ´Kämpft wie` Männer! Sonst werden die Hebräer euch zur Sklavenarbeit zwingen, so wie ihr es bisher mit ihnen gemacht habt! Seid Männer und kämpft!« 10 Die Philister zogen in die Schlacht, und Israel wurde geschlagen. Das Heer löste sich auf, und die Überlebenden flohen nach Hause. Es war eine vernichtende Niederlage, 30.000 gefallene Israeliten blieben auf dem Schlachtfeld zurück. 11 Auch Elis Söhne Hofni und Pinhas fanden den Tod. Die Bundeslade Gottes nahmen ´die Philister als Beute` mit.

Der Schock über den Verlust der Bundeslade

12 Ein Mann aus dem Stamm Benjamin entkam dem Schlachtfeld und lief noch am selben Tag nach Schilo. ´Als Zeichen seiner Trauer` hatte er seine Kleidung zerrissen und sich Erde auf den Kopf gestreut. 13 Als er ankam, saß Eli gerade auf seinem Stuhl und horchte in Richtung Straße. Denn er machte sich große Sorgen um die Bundeslade Gottes. Als der Bote in die Stadt kam und die Nachricht überbrachte, schrien alle, die es hörten, laut auf. 14 Eli hörte das Geschrei und fragte: »Was ist das für ein Lärm?« Da lief der Bote zu ihm und berichtete, was geschehen war. 15 Eli war mittlerweile achtundneunzig Jahre alt. Er war fast erblindet^[3] und konnte kaum noch etwas sehen. 16 »Ich komme direkt vom Schlachtfeld«, sagte der Bote. »Ich konnte ´den Feinden` entrinnen.« Eli fragte ihn: »Wie ist die Lage ´dort`, mein Sohn?« 17 Der Bote antwortete: »Israel ist vor den Philistern geflohen, und unser Heer hat große Verluste erlitten. Auch deine beiden Söhne Hofni und Pinhas sind gefallen, und die Bundeslade Gottes wurde ´als Beute` verschleppt.« 18 Als der Bote die Lade erwähnte, fiel Eli rücklings von seinem Stuhl am Eingang ´des Heiligtums`. Weil er alt und schwer war, brach er sich das Genick und starb. Vierzig Jahre lang hatte er Israel als Richter geführt. 19 Elis Schwiegertochter, die Frau des Pinhas, war hochschwanger. Als sie erfuhr, dass die Bundeslade Gottes zur Beute geworden war und dass ihr Schwiegervater und ihr Mann den Tod gefunden hatten, setzten plötzlich die Wehen bei ihr ein. Sie brach zusammen^[4] und brachte ihr Kind zur Welt. Die Wehen setzten ihr so zu, 20 dass sie im Sterben lag. Die Frauen, die bei ihr waren, wollten sie ermutigen: »Hab keine Angst, denn du hast einen Sohn geboren!« Aber sie antwortete nicht und war völlig teilnahmslos. 21 Sie dachte nur an ´den Verlust der` Bundeslade und an den Tod ihres Mannes und ihres Schwiegervaters. Dem Jungen gab sie den Namen Ikabod (»Fort ist die Herrlichkeit«)^[5], 22 denn sie sagte: »Fort ist die Herrlichkeit ´Gottes` aus Israel, weil die Bundeslade uns genommen wurde.«

1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek. 2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men. 3 And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies. 4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. 5 And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again. 6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp. 7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore. 8 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight. 10 And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen. 11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain. 12 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head. 13 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it , all the city cried out. 14 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli. 15 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see. 16 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son? 17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken. 18 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years. 19 And his daughter in law, Phinehas'wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her. 20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it . 21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband. 22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
