Die Geburt Samuels

1 In Ramatajim^[1], einem Ort im Bergland von Efraim, lebte ein Mann namens Elkana. Er gehörte zur Sippe der Zufiter^[2]. Sein Vater hieß Jeroham, sein Großvater Elihu und sein Urgroßvater Tohu. Tohu war ein Sohn des Efraimiters Zuf. 2 Elkana hatte zwei Frauen, die eine hieß Hanna, die andere Peninna. Peninna hatte Kinder, Hanna jedoch war kinderlos geblieben. 3 Jedes Jahr reiste Elkana ´mit seiner Familie zum Heiligtum` nach Schilo, um den HERRN, den allmächtigen Gott, anzubeten und ihm Opfer darzubringen. ´Zu dieser Zeit` dienten dort als Priester des HERRN die Söhne Elis, Hofni und Pinhas. 4 Jedes Mal, wenn Elkana sein Opfer darbrachte, gab er beim Opfermahl seiner Frau Peninna und all ihren Söhnen und Töchtern ihren Anteil. 5 Hanna jedoch bekam von ihm ein besonders gutes Stück^[3], denn er liebte sie. Der HERR aber hatte ihr Kinder versagt^[4]. 6 Ihre Rivalin Peninna versuchte fortwährend, gegen Hanna zu sticheln und sie zu kränken, weil sie kinderlos war^[5]. 7 So geschah es jedes Jahr, wenn sie zum Tempel des HERRN hinaufzogen: Peninna kränkte Hanna so sehr, dass diese weinte und nichts mehr essen wollte. 8 »Warum weinst du, Hanna?«, fragte Elkana dann. »Du isst ja gar nichts. Was bedrückt dich? Du hast doch mich - das ist besser als zehn Söhne!« 9 Als sie ´wieder einmal` in Schilo gegessen und getrunken hatten, stand Hanna auf und ging zum Heiligtum des HERRN. Der Priester Eli saß beim Eingang auf einem Stuhl neben der Tür. 10 Hanna war verzweifelt und betete unter Tränen zum HERRN. 11 Sie legte ein Gelübde ab: »HERR, du allmächtiger Gott, wenn du mein Leid ansiehst und an ´mich`, deine Dienerin, denkst, wenn du mich nicht vergisst und mir einen Sohn schenkst, dann will ich ihn dir zurückgeben: Sein ganzes Leben lang soll er ´dir`, dem HERRN, gehören. Als Zeichen dafür soll sein Haar niemals geschnitten werden.^[6]« 12 Sie betete lange zum HERRN, und Eli beobachtete sie genau^[7]. 13 Hanna betete nämlich still, nur ihre Lippen bewegten sich. Ihre Stimme war nicht zu hören. Darum hielt Eli sie für betrunken. 14 Er stellte sie zur Rede: »Wie lange willst du dich hier so betrunken aufführen? ´Geh und` schlaf erst mal deinen Rausch aus!« 15 Doch Hanna entgegnete: »So ist es nicht, mein Herr. Ich bin nicht betrunken.^[8] Ich bin verzweifelt und habe dem HERRN mein Herz ausgeschüttet. 16 Halte mich^[9] bitte nicht für eine heruntergekommene Frau^[10]! Ich habe vor lauter Kummer und Verzweiflung so lange gebetet.« 17 Da sagte Eli: »Geh in Frieden! Der Gott Israels wird dir die Bitte erfüllen, die du an ihn gerichtet hast.« 18 »Bitte denk auch weiterhin wohlwollend an deine Dienerin«^[11], antwortete Hanna. Sie ging ´zu den anderen` zurück und konnte wieder essen. Man sah ihr an, dass sie nicht mehr traurig war. 19 Am nächsten Morgen stand die ganze Familie früh auf und betete ´noch einmal im Heiligtum` den HERRN an. Danach kehrten sie wieder nach Rama zurück. Elkana schlief mit seiner Frau Hanna, und der HERR erhörte Hannas Gebet^[12]. 20 Sie wurde schwanger und brachte einen Sohn zur Welt. »Ich habe ihn vom HERRN erbeten«, sagte sie und nannte ihn Samuel (»von Gott erhört«)^[13].

Samuel wird dem Herrn geweiht

21 ´Im nächsten Jahr` zog Elkana mit seiner Familie ´wieder zum Heiligtum` hinauf, um dem HERRN das jährliche Schlachtopfer darzubringen und um seine Gelübde zu erfüllen. 22 Doch ´diesmal` kam Hanna nicht mit. Sie sagte zu ihrem Mann: »Wenn der Junge abgestillt ist, will ich ihn zum Heiligtum des HERRN bringen. Dort soll er dann für immer bleiben.« 23 »Tu, was du für richtig hältst«, antwortete Elkana. »Du kannst zu Hause bleiben, bis du ihn abgestillt hast. Möge der HERR ´dann auch` wahr machen, was er ´diesem Kind` zugesagt hat!^[14]« So blieb Hanna zu Hause und stillte das Kind, bis es entwöhnt war. 24 Danach brachte sie Samuel zum Heiligtum des HERRN nach Schilo. Außerdem nahm sie einen dreijährigen Stier, einen kleinen Sack^[15] Weizenmehl sowie einen mit Wein gefüllten Schlauch mit. Samuel war ´zu dieser Zeit` noch sehr klein. 25 Nachdem ´seine Eltern` den Stier ´für das Opfer` geschlachtet hatten, brachten sie Samuel zu Eli. 26 »Verzeihung, mein Herr«, sagte Hanna zu ihm, »so wahr du lebst: Ich bin die Frau, die hier neben dir stand und zum HERRN betete. 27 Diesen Jungen hier habe ich erbeten, und der HERR hat meine Bitte erfüllt. 28 So gebe ich ihn nun dem HERRN wieder zurück, damit er ihm dient sein Leben lang.« Danach beteten sie^[16] dort den HERRN an.

1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaimzophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite: 2 And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. 3 And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there. 4 And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions: 5 But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb. 6 And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb. 7 And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat. 8 Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons? 9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD. 10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore. 11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head. 12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth. 13 Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken. 14 And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee. 15 And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD. 16 Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto. 17 Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him. 18 And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad . 19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her. 20 Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying , Because I have asked him of the LORD. 21 And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow. 22 But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever. 23 And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him. 24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young. 25 And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD. 27 For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him: 28 Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.
