Eine Frau für Isaak

1 Abraham war inzwischen sehr alt geworden, und der HERR hatte ihn in jeder Hinsicht gesegnet. 2 Eines Tages sagte Abraham zu seinem obersten Knecht, der seinen gesamten Besitz verwaltete: »Leg deine Hand ´zum Schwur` zwischen meine Beine^[1]! (1Mo 47,29) 3 Schwöre mir beim HERRN, dem Gott über Himmel und Erde, dass du für meinen Sohn Isaak auf keinen Fall eine Frau aussuchst, die hier aus dem Land Kanaan stammt! 4 Geh stattdessen in meine Heimat und such ihm eine Frau aus meiner Verwandtschaft.« 5 »Vielleicht will die Frau gar nicht mit mir hierher kommen«, gab der Knecht zu bedenken. »Soll ich dann deinen Sohn in das Land zurückbringen, das du ´damals` verlassen hast?« 6 »Auf keinen Fall!« erwiderte Abraham. »Bring meinen Sohn nie wieder dorthin. 7 Denn der HERR, der Gott des Himmels, hat mich aus meinem Elternhaus^[2] und meiner Heimat weggeholt und mir mit einem Eid versprochen, meinen Nachkommen das Land Kanaan zu geben. Er wird seinen Engel vor dir herschicken, damit du eine Frau für meinen Sohn findest. 8 Wenn die Frau nicht mitkommen will, bist du nicht mehr an deinen Schwur gebunden. Aber bring auf keinen Fall meinen Sohn in meine Heimat zurück!« 9 Da legte der Knecht seine Hand zwischen Abrahams Beine und schwor seinem Herrn, alle Anweisungen zu befolgen. 10 Er belud zehn Kamele Abrahams mit wertvollen Geschenken und machte sich auf den Weg nach Mesopotamien^[3] in die Stadt, in der ´die Familie von Abrahams Bruder` Nahor lebte. 11 ´Als er dort ankam`, ließ er die Kamele draußen vor der Stadt am Wasserbrunnen lagern. Es war gegen Abend, um die Zeit, wenn die Frauen herauskommen, um Wasser zu schöpfen. 12 »HERR, du Gott meines Herrn Abraham«, betete er, »schenk mir heute Gelingen^[4] und erfülle den Wunsch meines Herrn^[5]! 13 Ich stehe hier am Brunnen, und gleich kommen die jungen Frauen aus der Stadt, um Wasser zu schöpfen. 14 Ich werde eine von ihnen bitten, mir aus ihrem Krug zu trinken zu geben. Wenn sie sagt: ›Trink nur, und ich werde auch für deine Kamele Wasser schöpfen‹, dann weiß ich: Das ist die Frau, die du für deinen Diener Isaak ausgewählt hast. Daran werde ich erkennen, dass du den Wunsch meines Herrn erfüllt hast^[6].« 15 Kaum hatte er das Gebet beendet, da kam auch schon eine junge Frau mit einem Wasserkrug auf der Schulter ´aus der Stadt` heraus. Es war Rebekka, die Tochter Betuëls. Betuëls Eltern waren Abrahams Bruder Nahor und dessen Frau Milka. 16 Rebekka war sehr schön. Sie war noch nicht verheiratet, und kein Mann hatte mit ihr geschlafen. Sie stieg hinunter zum Brunnen und füllte ihren Krug mit Wasser. Als sie ´die Stufen` am Brunnen wieder heraufstieg, 17 ging der Knecht auf sie zu und bat: »Bitte gib mir einen Schluck Wasser aus deinem Krug!« 18 »Gerne, mein Herr«, antwortete sie, nahm sofort den Krug von den Schultern und gab ihm zu trinken. 19 Als sein Durst gestillt war, sagte sie: »Ich will auch für deine Kamele Wasser schöpfen, damit sie sich satt trinken können.« 20 Rasch leerte sie ihren Krug in die Tränkrinne, eilte zum Brunnen und schöpfte so lange, bis alle Kamele genug getrunken hatten. 21 Der Knecht beobachtete sie schweigend. Er war gespannt, ob der HERR seine Reise gelingen lassen würde. 22 Als alle Kamele getrunken hatten, schenkte er Rebekka einen goldenen Nasenring, der sechs Gramm^[7] wog, sowie zwei goldene Armreife zu jeweils 120 Gramm^[8] 23 und fragte sie: »Wer ist dein Vater? Gibt es vielleicht in seinem Haus für uns einen Platz zum Übernachten?« 24 »Mein Vater heißt Betuël«, antwortete sie, »und meine Großeltern sind Nahor und Milka. 25 Stroh und Futter haben wir genug«, fuhr sie fort, »und Platz zum Übernachten gibt es auch.« 26 Da warf sich der Knecht nieder und betete zum HERRN: 27 »Gepriesen seist du, HERR, du Gott meines Herrn Abraham! Du hast ihm deine Liebe erwiesen und alle Versprechen gehalten, die du ihm gegeben hast.^[9] Und auch jetzt hast du mich geradewegs zum Haus seiner Verwandten geführt!« 28 Rebekka lief schnell nach Hause^[10] und erzählte ihrer Familie, was sie erlebt hatte. 29 Rebekkas Bruder Laban lief sofort zu Abrahams Knecht hinaus an den Brunnen. 30 Denn er hatte den Nasenring und die Armreife an Rebekka gesehen und ihren Bericht über das gehört, was der Mann zu ihr gesagt hatte. Als Laban am Brunnen ankam, wartete Abrahams Knecht immer noch dort bei den Kamelen. 31 »Komm mit, du vom HERRN Gesegneter«, sagte Laban zu ihm. »Du brauchst nicht hier draußen zu stehen. Ich habe zu Hause schon alles für dich vorbereitet, und auch für die Kamele gibt es genügend Platz.« 32 Da ging Abrahams Knecht mit. Man sattelte die Kamele ab und gab ihnen Stroh und Futter. Den Gästen brachte man Wasser, damit sie sich die Füße waschen konnten. 33 Als man Abrahams Knecht das Essen auftischte, lehnte er ab und sagte: »Ich esse erst, wenn ich mein Anliegen vorgebracht habe.« »Dann sprich!«, erwiderte Laban. 34 »Ich bin ein Knecht Abrahams«, begann er. 35 »Der HERR hat meinen Herrn reich gesegnet und ihm großen Wohlstand geschenkt. Er hat ihm Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder gegeben, dazu Silber, Gold, Knechte, Mägde, Kamele und Esel. 36 Sara, die Frau meines Herrn, hat ihm trotz ihres hohen Alters noch einen Sohn geschenkt, dem mein Herr seinen gesamten Besitz vermacht hat. 37 Mein Herr hat mich einen Eid schwören lassen und mir befohlen: ›Such für meinen Sohn auf keinen Fall eine Frau, die hier aus Kanaan stammt. 38 Geh stattdessen zu meinen Verwandten, zur Familie meines Vaters, und suche dort eine Frau für meinen Sohn.‹ 39 Als ich einwandte: ›Vielleicht will sie gar nicht mit mir kommen‹, 40 erwiderte er: ›Der HERR, dem mein Leben gehört^[11], wird dir seinen Engel zur Seite stellen. ´Mit seiner Hilfe` wird es dir gelingen, für meinen Sohn eine Frau aus der Familie meines Vaters zu finden. 41 Sollten meine Verwandten die Frau jedoch nicht mir dir ziehen lassen, dann – und nur dann – bist du von deinem Eid entbunden.‹ 42 Als ich heute an den Brunnen kam, betete ich: ›HERR, du Gott meines Herrn Abraham, bitte lass meine Reise gelingen! 43 Ich stehe hier am Brunnen. Wenn gleich eine junge Frau herauskommt, um Wasser zu schöpfen, werde ich sie bitten, mir einen Schluck Wasser aus ihrem Krug zu geben. 44 Wenn sie sagt: ›Trink nur, und auch für deine Kamele will ich Wasser schöpfen‹ – dann weiß ich: Sie ist die Frau, die du, HERR, für den Sohn meines Herrn bestimmt hast.‹ 45 Kaum hatte ich mein Gebet beendet, da kam auch schon Rebekka aus der Stadt mit einem Krug auf der Schulter. Sie stieg zum Brunnen hinunter und schöpfte Wasser. Ich bat sie, mir etwas zu trinken zu geben. 46 Sofort nahm sie den Krug von ihrer Schulter und sagte: ›Gerne, und auch deinen Kamelen will ich Wasser geben.‹ Ich trank, und sie gab den Kamelen zu trinken. 47 Als ich sie fragte, wer ihr Vater sei, antwortete sie: ›Mein Vater ist Betuël. Seine Eltern heißen Nahor und Milka.‹ Da legte ich ihr den Nasenring und die Armreife an. 48 Dann kniete ich nieder, berührte mit meiner Stirn den Boden und dankte dem HERRN, dem Gott meines Herrn Abraham. Denn er hat meine Suche nach einer Frau für Abrahams Sohn so gelenkt, dass ich direkt auf die Enkelin seines Bruders gestoßen bin. 49 Bitte lasst mich nun wissen, ob ihr meinem Herrn eure Gunst erweisen und seinen Wunsch erfüllen wollt. Wenn ihr nicht einwilligt, sagt es mir auch. Denn dann muss ich anderswo suchen.^[12]« 50 Laban und Betuël antworteten: »Der HERR hat es so gefügt, und darum können wir seine Entscheidung nur annehmen^[13]. 51 Hier ist Rebekka, nimm sie mit! Sie soll den Sohn deines Herrn heiraten, wie der HERR es bestimmt hat.« 52 Als der Knecht Abrahams das hörte, warf er sich zu Boden und betete den HERRN an. 53 Dann packte er silberne und goldene Schmuckstücke und Kleider aus und gab sie Rebekka. Auch ihrem Bruder und ihrer Mutter überreichte er kostbare Geschenke. 54 Danach aßen und tranken die Gäste und legten sich schlafen. Am nächsten Morgen sagte Abrahams Knecht: »Lasst mich nun zu meinem Herrn zurückkehren.« 55 Rebekkas Bruder und ihre Mutter erwiderten: »Wir hätten das Mädchen gerne noch einige Zeit bei uns, ´wenigstens` zehn Tage. Danach kann sie mit dir gehen.« 56 Doch er entgegnete: »Haltet mich nicht auf! Der HERR hat meine Reise gelingen lassen. Lasst mich gehen, ich möchte zu meinem Herrn zurückkehren!« 57 »Wir rufen das Mädchen«, sagten die beiden, »sie soll selbst entscheiden.« 58 Sie riefen Rebekka und fragten: »Bist du damit einverstanden, mit diesem Mann fortzuziehen?« »Ja, ich komme mit!«, sagte sie. 59 Da nahmen sie Abschied von Rebekka und der Dienerin, die Rebekka gestillt und aufgezogen hatte, sowie von Abrahams Knecht und seinen Begleitern. 60 Sie segneten Rebekka und sagten: »Unsere Schwester! Du sollst die Stammmutter eines unzählbar großen Volkes werden!^[14] Mögen deine Nachkommen ihre Feinde besiegen und deren Städte erobern!^[15]« 61 Rebekka und ihre Dienerinnen machten sich reisefertig und bestiegen ihre Kamele. Unter der Führung von Abrahams Knecht machten sie sich auf den Weg nach Kanaan.^[16] 62 Isaak wohnte damals im Süden des Landes. Er war gerade vom »Brunnen des Lebendigen, der mich sieht« zurückgekommen.^[17] 63 Gegen Abend ging er ´noch einmal` aufs freie Feld hinaus, um seinen Gedanken nachzuhängen^[18]. Als er aufschaute, sah er auf einmal ´eine Karawane mit` Kamelen herankommen. 64 Auch Rebekka hatte Ausschau gehalten und Isaak entdeckt. Schnell stieg sie vom Kamel herunter 65 und fragte Abrahams Knecht: »Wer ist dieser Mann, der uns dort über die Felder entgegenläuft?« »Es ist mein Herr«, antwortete der Knecht. Da nahm sie ihren Schleier und verhüllte sich. 66 Der Knecht erzählte Isaak alles, was ´auf der Reise` geschehen war. 67 Isaak führte Rebekka in das Zelt seiner ´verstorbenen` Mutter Sara, und sie wurde seine Frau. Er liebte sie sehr und fand bei ihr Trost nach dem Verlust seiner Mutter.

1 And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. 2 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: 3 And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: 4 But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac. 5 And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest? 6 And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again. 7 The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father' house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence. 8 And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again. 9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter. 10 And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor. 11 And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water . 12 And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham. 13 Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water: 14 And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master. 15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham' brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. 16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up. 17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher. 18 And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. 19 And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. 20 And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water , and drew for all his camels. 21 And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not. 22 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold; 23 And said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father' house for us to lodge in? 24 And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. 25 She said moreover unto him, We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in. 26 And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the LORD. 27 And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master' brethren. 28 And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother' house these things. 29 And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well. 30 And it came to pass, when he saw the earring and bracelets upon his sister' hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well. 31 And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels. 32 And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men' feet that were with him. 33 And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And she said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor' son, whom Milcah bare unto him: and I put the earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands. 48 And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master' brother' daughter unto his son. 49 And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left. 50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good. 51 Behold, Rebekah is before thee, take her , and go, and let her be thy master' son' wife, as the LORD hath spoken. 52 And it came to pass, that, when Abraham' servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth. 53 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things. 54 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master. 55 And her brother and her mother said, Let the damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go. 56 And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath prospered my way; send me away that I may go to my master. 57 And they said, We will call the damsel, and enquire at her mouth. 58 And they called Rebekah, and said unto her, Wilt thou go with this man? And she said, I will go. 59 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, and Abraham' servant, and his men. 60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which hate them. 61 And Rebekah arose, and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, and went his way. 62 And Isaac came from the way of the well Lahairoi; for he dwelt in the south country. 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming. 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel. 65 For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. 67 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah' tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother' death .
