Gott bestätigt den Bund und ordnet die Beschneidung als Bundeszeichen an

1 Als Abram neunundneunzig Jahre alt war, erschien ihm der HERR und sagte zu ihm: »Ich bin Gott, der Allmächtige. Geh deinen Weg mit mir und halte mir die Treue.^[1] 2 Ich will zu meinem Bund mit dir stehen und dir unermesslich viele Nachkommen schenken.« 3 Da kniete Abram nieder und berührte mit seiner Stirn den Boden. Gott redete weiter mit ihm: 4 »Zu meinem Bund mit dir gehört das Versprechen^[2], dass du zum Stammvater vieler Völker wirst. 5 Darum sollst du nicht mehr Abram (›erhabener Vater‹), sondern Abraham (›Vater einer großen Menge‹) heißen. Denn ich habe dich zum Stammvater vieler Völker bestimmt. 6 Ich werde dir so viele Nachkommen schenken, dass aus ihnen ganze Völker hervorgehen.^[3] Sogar Könige werden von dir abstammen. 7 Der Bund zwischen uns schließt auch deine Nachkommen in allen künftigen Generationen ein. Meine Zusage, dein Gott und der Gott deiner Nachkommen zu sein, gilt für immer. 8 Ich werde euch das ganze Land Kanaan geben, in dem du ´bisher nur` als Fremder lebst. Es wird deinen Nachkommen für immer gehören, und ich werde ihr Gott sein.« 9 Weiter sagte Gott zu Abraham: »Zu meinem Bund mit euch gehört auch eine Verpflichtung für euch und alle künftigen Generationen. 10 Sie besteht darin^[4], alle männlichen Personen unter euch zu beschneiden, 11 indem ihr die Vorhaut an ihrem Glied entfernt. Dies soll das Zeichen für den Bund sein, den ich mit euch geschlossen habe. 12 Jeder männliche Neugeborene soll im Alter von acht Tagen beschnitten werden, jetzt und in allen künftigen Generationen. ´Das gilt auch für die Sklaven`, die bei euch geboren werden oder die ihr von Fremden kauft, auch wenn sie eigentlich nicht zu euren Nachkommen gehören. 13 Alle ´Sklaven` müssen beschnitten werden, ob im Haus geboren oder gekauft. Ihr sollt an eurem Körper das Zeichen meines Bundes tragen, der für alle Zeiten gilt. 14 Wer sich nicht beschneiden lässt, hat sein Leben verwirkt und muss aus dem Volk verstoßen werden. Denn er hat den Bund mit mir gebrochen.« 15 Dann sagte Gott zu Abraham: »Deine Frau soll in Zukunft nicht mehr Sarai heißen. Nenne sie Sara (›Fürstin‹). 16 Ich werde sie segnen und dir einen Sohn von ihr schenken. Mein Segen ´geht noch weiter`: Ganze Völker werden von ihr abstammen und große Könige^[5] aus ihr hervorgehen.« 17 Da beugte sich Abraham erneut nieder und berührte mit seiner Stirn den Boden. Aber ´im Stillen` lachte er ´in sich hinein` und dachte: »Ich bin hundert Jahre alt – wie soll ich da noch Vater werden? Und Sara ist schon neunzig, da soll sie noch ein Kind zur Welt bringen?« 18 Zu Gott sagte er: »Erfülle deine Zusage doch an Ismael!^[6]« 19 Doch Gott entgegnete: »Nein, deine Frau Sara wird dir einen Sohn schenken. Nenne ihn Isaak (›Man lacht‹). Er ist derjenige, mit dem ich meinen Bund fortführen werde. Meine ewige Bundeszusage gilt seinen Nachkommen. 20 Doch auch deine Bitte für Ismael habe ich erhört: Ich werde ihn segnen und fruchtbar machen und ihm überaus viele Nachkommen schenken. Zwölf Fürsten werden von ihm abstammen, und er wird der Stammvater eines großen Volkes werden. 21 Aber meinen Bund führe ich mit Isaak fort. Nächstes Jahr um diese Zeit wird Sara ihn zur Welt bringen.« 22 Nachdem Gott dies gesagt hatte, verließ er Abraham und erhob sich zum Himmel. 23 Noch am selben Tag vollzog Abraham die Beschneidung an seinem Sohn Ismael und an allen männlichen Sklaven, die seit ihrer Geburt oder ihrem Kauf in seinem Dienst standen – so wie Gott es ihm aufgetragen hatte. 24 Auch Abraham selbst ließ sich beschneiden. Er war damals neunundneunzig Jahre alt. 25 Sein Sohn Ismael war dreizehn Jahre alt, als er beschnitten wurde. 26 Vater und Sohn wurden am selben Tag beschnitten 27 zusammen mit allen männlichen Personen, die bei ihnen lebten, einschließlich der Sklaven^[7].

1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. 2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. 3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, 4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations. 5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee. 6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. 8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. 9 And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. 10 This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. 11 And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. 12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. 13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant. 15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be . 16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her. 17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? 18 And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! 19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. 22 And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham. 23 And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham' house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him. 24 And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son. 27 And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him.
