1Todos deben obedecer a las autoridades del gobierno, porque Dios es quien les ha otorgado el poder. No hay ningún gobierno que Dios no haya establecido.2Así que los que se niegan a obedecer a las autoridades se rebelan contra lo que Dios ha ordenado, y recibirán castigo.3Las autoridades no están para darle miedo a la gente que hace el bien, sino a los maleantes. Así que si no deseas temerlas, pórtate bien y las autoridades hablarán bien de ti.4Dios ha puesto al servicio de él a las autoridades para tu beneficio. Pero si estás haciendo algo malo, claro que tienes que temerlas, porque para eso tienen armas para castigarte. Para eso las ha puesto Dios, para actuar con justicia y castigar a los malhechores.5Así que hay que obedecer a las autoridades para que no te castiguen y porque es un deber de conciencia.6Por eso mismo ustedes pagan impuestos. Las autoridades están sirviéndoles en el trabajo que Dios les ha encomendado.7Páguenle a cada quien lo que le corresponda: sean impuestos, contribuciones, respeto u honor.
La responsabilidad hacia los demás
8No tengan deudas con nadie, excepto las deudas de amor hacia otros. De hecho, quien ama al prójimo ha cumplido la ley,9porque los mandamientos dicen: «No cometas adulterio», «no mates», «no robes», «no codicies»; esos, y todos los demás mandamientos, se resumen en este otro: «Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo».10El que ama no le hace mal a nadie y, por eso mismo, el que ama cumple perfectamente la ley.11Tenemos que vivir así, sabiendo que el tiempo vuela. ¡Despertemos! Nuestra salvación está más cerca ahora que cuando creímos por primera vez.12La noche ya está terminando y el nuevo día despuntará pronto. Por eso, dejemos de actuar en las tinieblas y vistámonos la armadura de la luz.13Seamos siempre decentes, como si anduviéramos a la luz del día. No gastemos el tiempo en orgías y borracheras, ni en inmoralidades sexuales y libertinajes, ni en pleitos y envidias.14Más bien, revístanse ustedes del Señor Jesucristo, y no busquen satisfacer los deseos de su naturaleza pecadora.
1Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. (Dn 2:21; Jn 19:11; Tit 3:1; 1 P 2:13)2Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.3For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. Fulfilling the Law Through Love
8Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. (Lv 19:13; Pr 3:27; Mt 22:40; Jn 13:34; Ro 13:10; Col 3:14)9For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Ex 20:13; Lv 19:18; Dt 5:17; Mt 19:18)10Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. (Jn 14:15; Ro 13:8)11Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. (Is 56:1; Lc 21:28; 1 Co 15:34; Ef 5:14; 1 Ts 5:6)12The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. (Jn 3:20; Jn 9:4; 2 Co 6:7; Ef 5:11; Ef 6:11; Ef 6:13; Col 3:8; 1 Ts 5:8)13Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.
