1Un sábado, Jesús fue a comer a casa de un jefe fariseo. Los fariseos lo vigilaban.2Allí, frente a él, también estaba un hombre enfermo de hidropesía.3Jesús les preguntó a los maestros de la ley y a los fariseos: ―¿Está permitido sanar a un enfermo en sábado?4Pero ellos se quedaron callados. Entonces tomó al enfermo, lo sanó y lo despidió.5Luego les preguntó a ellos: ―¿Si a uno de ustedes se le cae en un pozo su hijo o su buey, no lo saca en seguida, aunque sea sábado?6Y no pudieron contestarle nada.7Al ver que los invitados escogían los lugares de honor en la mesa, les contó esta parábola:8―Cuando alguien te invite a una fiesta de bodas, no te sientes en el lugar de honor, porque si llega algún invitado más importante que tú,9el que invitó a los dos te dirá: “Dale tu asiento a este otro invitado”. Entonces, avergonzado, tendrás que sentarte en el último lugar.10Lo mejor será que, cuando te inviten, te sientes en el último lugar. Así, cuando venga el que te invitó, te dirá: “Amigo, ven acá, aquí hay un lugar mejor”. Así, recibirás honor delante de todos los demás invitados.11Todo el que se engrandece a sí mismo será humillado; y al que se humilla Dios lo ensalzará.12Luego, Jesús le dijo al que lo había invitado: ―Cuando des una comida o una cena, no invites a tus amigos ni a tus hermanos ni a tus familiares ni a tus vecinos ricos, porque cuando ellos te devuelvan la invitación, habrás recibido tu recompensa.13Lo mejor es que cuando des un banquete, invites a los pobres, a los inválidos, a los cojos y a los ciegos.14Así serás dichoso, pues ellos no tienen con qué recompensarte, pero tú serás recompensado cuando resuciten los justos.
Parábola del gran banquete
15Cuando uno de los que estaba sentado a la mesa con Jesús oyó esto, le dijo: ―¡Dichoso el que coma en el banquete del reino de Dios!16Jesús le respondió: ―Un hombre preparó una gran cena e invitó a muchas personas.17A la hora de la cena mandó a su sirviente a decirles a los invitados: “Vengan, porque ya todo está listo”.18Pero todos los invitados comenzaron a dar excusas. El primero dijo: “Te ruego que me disculpes, pues acabo de comprar un terreno y tengo que ir a verlo”.19Otro dijo: “Te ruego que me disculpes, pues acabo de comprar cinco yuntas de bueyes y tengo que probarlas”.20Y otro dijo: “Acabo de casarme y no puedo ir”.21»El sirviente regresó y le contó todo esto a su señor. Entonces el dueño de la casa se enojó y le dijo al sirviente: “Ve pronto por las calles y los callejones del pueblo, y trae acá a los pobres, a los inválidos, a los cojos y a los ciegos”.22Poco después, el siervo volvió a decirle: “Señor, ya hice lo que usted me mandó, pero todavía hay lugar”.23El señor le dijo: “Ve por los caminos y las veredas y obliga a la gente a entrar, para que se llene mi casa.24Les aseguro que ninguno de los primeros invitados disfrutará de mi cena”».
El precio del discipulado
25Mucha gente seguía a Jesús, entonces él se volvió y les dijo:26«El que quiera seguirme tiene que amarme más que a su padre, a su madre, a su esposa y a sus hijos, a sus hermanos y a sus hermanas, e incluso más que a su propia vida. De lo contrario, no podrá ser mi discípulo.27El que no carga su cruz y me sigue, no puede ser mi discípulo.28»Supongamos que alguno de ustedes quiere construir una torre. ¿Qué tendría que hacer primero? Tendría que sentarse a calcular el costo, para ver si tiene lo suficiente para terminarla,29porque si echa los cimientos y después no puede terminarla, todos los que la vean se burlarán de él.30Entonces dirán: “Este hombre comenzó a construir y no pudo terminar su torre”.31Supongamos también que un rey está a punto de ir a la guerra contra otro rey. ¿Qué tendría que hacer primero? Tendría que sentarse a calcular si con diez mil hombres puede enfrentarse al que lo va a atacar con veinte mil.32Si ve que no puede, enviará una delegación para pedir condiciones de paz mientras el enemigo está todavía lejos.33De igual manera, cualquiera de ustedes que quiera ser mi discípulo tendrá que dejar todo lo que tiene.34La sal es buena, pero si ya no tiene sabor, ¿cómo volverá a recuperarlo?35No sirve ni para la tierra ni para el abono; lo mejor es tirarla. El que tenga oídos para oír, que oiga».

Then he took him and healed him and sent him away.5And he said to them, “Which of you, having a son[1] or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?” (Dt 22:4; Mt 12:11; Lc 13:15)6And they could not reply to these things. The Parable of the Wedding Feast
7Now he told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the places of honor, saying to them, (Lc 11:43)8“When you are invited by someone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest someone more distinguished than you be invited by him,9and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give your place to this person,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place.10But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. (Pr 25:6)11For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Pr 29:23; Ez 21:26; Mt 18:4; Lc 18:14; Stg 4:6; Stg 4:10; 1 P 5:5)
The Parable of the Great Banquet
12He said also to the man who had invited him, “When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers[2] or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. (Lc 6:34; Jn 21:12)13But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, (Neh 8:10; Neh 8:12; Est 9:22; Lc 14:21)14and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.” (Jn 11:24; Hch 24:15; 1 Co 15:23; 1 Ts 4:16; Ap 20:4)15When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!” (Lc 13:29; Lc 22:16; Lc 22:30; Ap 19:9)16But he said to him, “A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. (Is 25:6; Mt 22:2)17And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant[3] to say to those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’ (Est 6:14; Pr 9:3; Pr 9:5)18But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused.’19And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them. Please have me excused.’20And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ (Dt 24:5)21So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.’ (Lc 14:13)22And the servant said, ‘Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’23And the master said to the servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled.24For I tell you,[4] none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet.’” (Mt 21:43; Hch 13:46)
The Cost of Discipleship
25Now great crowds accompanied him, and he turned and said to them,26“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. (Dt 33:9; Mt 10:37; Lc 14:33; Lc 16:13; Jn 12:25; Hch 20:24; Ap 12:11)27Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. (Mt 10:38; Mt 16:24; Mr 8:34; Lc 9:23; Jn 19:17)28For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? (Pr 24:27)29Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him,30saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’31Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? (Lc 14:28)32And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.33So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple. (Lc 14:26; Lc 18:28; Flp 3:7)
Salt Without Taste Is Worthless
34“Salt is good, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? (Mt 5:13; Mr 9:50)35It is of no use either for the soil or for the manure pile. It is thrown away. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” (Mt 11:15)
