Esposas para los benjaminitas

1 Los jefes de Israel habían jurado en Mizpa que no permitirían que sus hijas se casaran con hombres de la tribu de Benjamín. 2 Los caudillos de Israel se reunieron en Betel y se sentaron delante del SEÑOR hasta la tarde y lloraron amargamente. 3 «Oh SEÑOR, Dios de Israel —lloraban—, ¿por qué ha sucedido esto, que una de nuestras tribus falte?». 4 Al día siguiente se levantaron temprano y edificaron un altar, y ofrecieron sacrificios y ofrendas de paz en él. 5 Y decían entre ellos: «¿Hubo alguna tribu de Israel que no estuviera representada cuando tuvimos nuestro consejo delante del SEÑOR en Mizpa?». En aquella ocasión se había acordado por juramento solemne que quien se negara a asistir«debía morir». 6 Hubo profunda tristeza a través de todo Israel por la pérdida de la tribu hermana de Benjamín. «Ha sido cortada de Israel toda una tribu —decían—. 7 ¿Cómo conseguiremos mujeres para los pocos que quedan, puesto que hemos jurado al SEÑOR que no les daremos nuestras hijas?». 8-9 Entonces pensaron nuevamente en el juramento que habían hecho de matar a todos los que se habían negado a acudir a Mizpa y recordaron que al pasar lista a la tropa, de Jabes Galaad nadie había asistido. 10-12 Así pues, enviaron doce mil de los mejores soldados para que destruyeran Jabes Galaad. Todos los hombres, las mujeres casadas y los niños fueron muertos, pero las doncellas de Jabes Galaad fueron dejadas con vida. Hubo cuatrocientas de estas y fueron llevadas al campamento de Siló. 13 Israel envió una delegación de paz al pequeño remanente de hombres de Benjamín que estaban en la roca de Rimón. 14 Les fueron entregadas las cuatrocientas jóvenes para que se casaran con ellas y regresaron a sus hogares. Pero no fueron suficientes para todos ellos. 15 Aquel fue un tiempo muy triste para Israel, porque el SEÑOR había abierto una brecha entre las tribus de Israel. 16 «¿De dónde sacaremos mujeres para los demás, puesto que todas las mujeres de Benjamín han muerto? —preguntaban los dirigentes de Israel—. 17 Tenemos que hallar una forma de obtener mujeres para ellos, a fin de que no se pierda para siempre toda una tribu de Israel. 18 Pero no podemos darles nuestras hijas, hemos jurado con voto solemne que cualquiera que lo haga será maldito de parte de Dios». 19 De pronto alguien se acordó de la festividad religiosa anual que se tenía en los campos de Siló, entre Leboná y Betel, al costado oriental del camino que va desde Betel a Siquén, y 20 dijeron a los hombres de Benjamín que todavía necesitaban mujeres: «Vayan y escóndanse en los viñedos, 21 y cuando las jóvenes de Siló salgan para ir a sus danzas, corran y tómenlas y llévenselas para que sean sus mujeres. 22 Y cuando sus padres y hermanos vengan a protestar, les diremos: “Por favor, sean comprensivos, y dejen que ellos tengan a sus hijas porque no hallamos suficientes esposas para ellos cuando destruimos Jabes Galaad, y ustedes no podían darles sus hijas a ellos sin ser culpables”». 23 Los hombres de Benjamín hicieron como se les dijo. Raptaron a las doncellas que tomaban parte en la fiesta y se las llevaron a su tierra. Luego reedificaron sus ciudades y vivieron en ellas. 24 Entonces el ejército de Israel se disolvió y regresó cada uno a su casa. 25 En aquel tiempo no había rey en Israel y cada hombre hacía lo que bien le parecía.

Wives Provided for the Tribe of Benjamin

1 Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, “No one of us shall give his daughter in marriage to Benjamin.” (Jue 20:1; Jue 21:18) 2 And the people came to Bethel and sat there till evening before God, and they lifted up their voices and wept bitterly. (Jue 20:18; Jue 20:26; Jue 20:31) 3 And they said, “O Lord, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that today there should be one tribe lacking in Israel?” 4 And the next day the people rose early and built there an altar and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. (2 S 24:25) 5 And the people of Israel said, “Which of all the tribes of Israel did not come up in the assembly to the Lord?” For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah, saying, “He shall surely be put to death.” (Jue 5:23) 6 And the people of Israel had compassion for Benjamin their brother and said, “One tribe is cut off from Israel this day. (Jue 21:15) 7 What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the Lord that we will not give them any of our daughters for wives?” (Jue 21:16) 8 And they said, “What one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to the Lord to Mizpah?” And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead, to the assembly. (1 S 11:1; 1 S 31:11) 9 For when the people were mustered, behold, not one of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was there. (Jue 21:8) 10 So the congregation sent 12,000 of their bravest men there and commanded them, “Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword; also the women and the little ones. (Jue 21:5) 11 This is what you shall do: every male and every woman that has lain with a male you shall devote to destruction.” (Nm 31:17) 12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead 400 young virgins who had not known a man by lying with him, and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan. (Jos 18:1) 13 Then the whole congregation sent word to the people of Benjamin who were at the rock of Rimmon and proclaimed peace to them. (Dt 20:10; Jue 20:47) 14 And Benjamin returned at that time. And they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead, but they were not enough for them. 15 And the people had compassion on Benjamin because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel. (Jue 21:6) 16 Then the elders of the congregation said, “What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?” (Jue 21:7) 17 And they said, “There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, that a tribe not be blotted out from Israel. 18 Yet we cannot give them wives from our daughters.” For the people of Israel had sworn, “Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin.” (Jue 21:1) 19 So they said, “Behold, there is the yearly feast of the Lord at Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, on the east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.” (Jue 20:31) 20 And they commanded the people of Benjamin, saying, “Go and lie in ambush in the vineyards 21 and watch. If the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards and snatch each man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin. (Ex 15:20; Jue 11:34) 22 And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them, ‘Grant them graciously to us, because we did not take for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.’” 23 And the people of Benjamin did so and took their wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they carried off. Then they went and returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the towns and lived in them. (Jue 20:48) 24 And the people of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance. 25 In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. (Jue 17:6; Jue 18:1; Jue 19:1)
