Mensaje para Egipto

1 Estos son los mensajes que el SEÑOR le dio a Jeremías respecto a las naciones extranjeras. Respecto a los egipcios: 2 Este mensaje se dio contra Egipto en ocasión de la batalla de Carquemis, cuando el faraón Necao, rey de Egipto, y su ejército fueron derrotados junto al río Éufrates por Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, el cuarto año del reinado de Joacim, hijo de Josías, rey de Judá: 3 ¡Egipcios, cíñanse la armadura y marchen a la batalla! 4 Ensillen los caballos y prepárense para cabalgar; pónganse los yelmos, afilen las espadas y pónganse la armadura. 5 ¡Pero vean lo que acontece! El ejército egipcio huye atemorizado; los más valerosos de sus soldados corren sin volver la mirada. Sí, el terror los rodeará por todos lados, dice el SEÑOR. 6 No escapará ni el más veloz, ni el más fuerte de los guerreros. En el norte, junto al río Éufrates, han tropezado y caído. 7 ¿Qué es este potente ejército que se alza como el Nilo en el tiempo de la creciente, inundando toda la tierra? 8 Es el ejército egipcio, que presume de que cubrirá la tierra como si fuera inundación, y que destruirá a todo enemigo. 9 ¡Vengan pues, caballos, carrozas de guerra y fuertes guerreros de Egipto! ¡Vengan, todos los de Cus y Fut, que empuñan el escudo y preparan sus armas para entrar en la batalla! 10 Porque hoy es el día del SEÑOR Dios de los ejércitos, el día de venganza contra sus enemigos. La espada herirá hasta saciarse, sí, derramará sangre por todos lados, porque el SEÑOR Dios de los ejércitos recibirá hoy un sacrificio en la tierra del norte, junto al río Éufrates. 11 ¡Ve a Galaad en busca de remedio, oh virgen, hija de Egipto! ¡Pero no hay remedio para tus heridas, aunque hayas usado muchas medicinas, no hay salvación para ti! 12 Las naciones han oído de la vergüenza tuya. Por todas partes se escucha tu clamor de desesperación y derrota. Tus más poderosos soldados tropezarán unos con otros y caerán juntos. 13 Entonces el SEÑOR dio a Jeremías este mensaje respecto a la venida de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, para atacar a Egipto: 14 ¡Grítalo en Egipto, publícalo en las ciudades de Migdol, Menfis y Tafnes! Es mejor que no emprendas ninguna acción, no te movilices para la guerra, porque las armas del enemigo acabarán de cualquier modo con todo en torno tuyo. 15 ¿Por qué ha huido aterrorizado Apis, su dios toro? ¡Porque el SEÑOR lo derribó ante sus enemigos! 16 Enormes multitudes caen amontonadas. (Entonces el grupo de sobrevivientes de los judíos dirá: «¡Vengan, regresemos a Judá en donde nacimos, y alejémonos de toda esta matanza!»). 17 ¡Cámbienle el nombre al faraón Hofra y llámenlo«Varón sin poder pero de mucho ruido»! 18 ¡Téngalo por absolutamente seguro, dice el Rey, el SEÑOR de los ejércitos, que viene contra Egipto uno tan alto como el monte Tabor o el monte Carmelo junto al mar! 19 ¡Alisten el equipaje, prepárense a partir al exilio, ciudadanos de Egipto, porque la ciudad de Menfis será totalmente destruida y dejada sin persona viva! 20-21 Egipto es hermoso como becerra pero un tábano la hace correr, ¡un tábano que viene del norte! Hasta sus famosos mercenarios se han vuelto como asustados terneros. Corren y corren porque es día de gran calamidad para Egipto, es un tiempo de tremendo castigo. 22-23 Silencioso como serpiente que se desliza, huye Egipto. Entra el ejército invasor. Los innumerables soldados tronchan a su pueblo como si fueran leñadores que abren un claro en el bosque. 24 Indefensa como muchachita es Egipto ante estos hombres del norte. 25 El SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel, dice: Castigaré a Amón, dios de Tebas, y a los demás dioses de Egipto. Castigaré también al faraón y a cuantos en él confían. 26 Los entregaré en poder de quienes quieren matarlos, en poder de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, y de su ejército. Pero luego la tierra se recuperará de los desastres de la guerra, y será repoblada. 27 ¡Pero tú no temas, oh pueblo mío que regresas a tu tierra, no te desanimes, porque yo te salvaré allá lejos y te traeré a tus hijos y a tus hijas desde tierra lejana! ¡Sí, Israel retornará a su tierra y tendrá reposo y nada lo asustará! 28 ¡No temas, oh Jacob, siervo mío, dice el SEÑOR, porque yo estoy contigo! Yo destruiré a todas las naciones a las cuales te he enviado cautivo, pero a ti no te destruiré. Yo te castigaré, pero únicamente lo que baste para corregirte.

Judgment on Egypt

1 The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations. (Jer 1:5; Jer 25:13; Jer 25:15) 2 About Egypt. 3 “Prepare buckler and shield, and advance for battle! (Jer 51:11) 4 Harness the horses; mount, O horsemen! Take your stations with your helmets, polish your spears, put on your armor! (Jer 46:3; Nah 3:2) 5 Why have I seen it? They are dismayed and have turned backward. 6 “The swift cannot flee away, nor the warrior escape; in the north by the river Euphrates they have stumbled and fallen. (Jer 46:2; Dn 11:19) 7 “Who is this, rising like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge? (Is 8:7; Jer 47:2; Ez 32:2; Dn 11:22)

8 Egypt rises like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge. He said, ‘I will rise, I will cover the earth, I will destroy cities and their inhabitants.’ (Jer 46:7) 9 Advance, O horses, and rage, O chariots! 10 That day is the day of the Lord God of hosts, a day of vengeance, to avenge himself on his foes. The sword shall devour and be sated and drink its fill of their blood. 11 Go up to Gilead, and take balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt! In vain you have used many medicines; there is no healing for you. (Jer 8:22; Ez 30:21) 12 The nations have heard of your shame, and the earth is full of your cry; for warrior has stumbled against warrior; they have both fallen together.” (Jer 46:6) 13 The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to strike the land of Egypt: (Is 19:4; Jer 43:10; Jer 44:30; Ez 29:10)

14 “Declare in Egypt, and proclaim in Migdol; proclaim in Memphis and Tahpanhes; say, ‘Stand ready and be prepared, for the sword shall devour around you.’ (Jer 44:1; Jer 46:3; Jer 46:10) 15 Why are your mighty ones face down? They do not stand^[1] because the Lord thrust them down. 16 He made many stumble, and they fell, and they said one to another, ‘Arise, and let us go back to our own people and to the land of our birth, because of the sword of the oppressor.’ (Lv 26:37; Jer 50:16) 17 Call the name of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, ‘Noisy one who lets the hour go by.’ (Is 30:7) 18 “As I live, declares the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts, like Tabor among the mountains and like Carmel by the sea, shall one come. 19 Prepare yourselves baggage for exile, O inhabitants of Egypt! For Memphis shall become a waste, a ruin, without inhabitant. (Jer 4:7; Jer 44:1; Jer 48:18; Ez 12:3)

20 “A beautiful heifer is Egypt, but a biting fly from the north has come upon her. (Jer 1:13; Jer 46:6; Jer 46:10; Jer 46:24; Os 10:11)

21 Even her hired soldiers in her midst are like fattened calves; yes, they have turned and fled together; they did not stand, for the day of their calamity has come upon them, the time of their punishment. (Jer 50:27; Am 6:4; Mal 4:2) 22 “She makes a sound like a serpent gliding away; for her enemies march in force and come against her with axes like those who fell trees. (Is 10:34; Is 14:8; Is 29:4) 23 They shall cut down her forest, declares the Lord, though it is impenetrable, because they are more numerous than locusts; they are without number. (Jue 6:5; Jue 7:12; Jer 46:22) 24 The daughter of Egypt shall be put to shame; she shall be delivered into the hand of a people from the north.” (Jer 46:20) 25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, said: “Behold, I am bringing punishment upon Amon of Thebes, and Pharaoh and Egypt and her gods and her kings, upon Pharaoh and those who trust in him. 26 I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their life, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his officers. Afterward Egypt shall be inhabited as in the days of old, declares the Lord. (Is 19:22; Is 51:9; Jer 44:30; Ez 29:13; Ez 30:4; Ez 32:11)

27 “But fear not, O Jacob my servant, nor be dismayed, O Israel, for behold, I will save you from far away, and your offspring from the land of their captivity. Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease, and none shall make him afraid. (Is 43:5; Jer 30:10) 28 Fear not, O Jacob my servant, declares the Lord, for I am with you. I will make a full end of all the nations to which I have driven you, but of you I will not make a full end. I will discipline you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.” (Jer 10:24; Jer 46:27)
