Senaquerib amenaza a Jerusalén

1 Así que en el año catorce del reinado del rey Ezequías llegó Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, a atacar las ciudades amuralladas de Judá, y las conquistó. 2 Luego, al frente de un gran ejército, envió desde Laquis a su representante personal para que se entrevistara con el rey Ezequías en Jerusalén. Acampó cerca del acueducto del estanque de arriba, por el camino del campo donde se blanquean telas. 3 Eliaquín, hijo de Jilquías, primer ministro de Israel, Sebna escriba del rey, y Joa, hijo de Asaf, secretario real, se constituyeron en comité de tregua y salieron de la ciudad a su encuentro. 4 El embajador asirio les dijo que fueran a decirle a Ezequías: «El poderoso rey de Asiria dice que eres un necio si piensas que el rey de Egipto te ayudará. 5 ¿Qué valor tienen las promesas del faraón? Las palabras solas nada son ante la fuerza, ¡y tú confiando en su ayuda, te has rebelado contra mí! 6 Egipto es un aliado peligroso. Es vara afilada que te atravesará la mano si te apoyas en ella. Eso les ha pasado a cuantos han buscado apoyo en él. 7 Pero quizá digas: “¡Confiamos en el SEÑOR Dios nuestro!”. ¿Ah, sí? ¿No es acaso el mismo a quien su rey insultó, derribando sus templos y altares en los montes y haciendo que todos los de Judá adoren únicamente en los altares aquí en Jerusalén? 8-9 »Mi señor, el rey de Asiria, quiere hacer contigo una pequeña apuesta: ¿A que en tu ejército no te quedan dos mil hombres? Si te quedan, él te dará dos mil caballos para que ellos los monten. Con tan insignificante ejército, ¿cómo crees poder enfrentarte siquiera al más pequeño escuadrón de mi señor? Porque de Egipto no obtendrás socorro. 10 Es más: ¿crees que he venido acá sin que el SEÑOR me dijera que me apoderara de esta tierra? El SEÑOR me dijo: “Ve y destrúyela”». 11 Entonces Eliaquín, Sebna y Joa le dijeron: ―Te rogamos que nos hables en arameo que nosotros entendemos bastante bien. No nos hables en hebreo, porque te oirá la gente de la muralla. 12 Pero él respondió: ―Mi señor quiere que todos los de Jerusalén escuchen esto y no solamente ustedes. Quiere que sepan que si no se rinden, esta ciudad será asediada hasta que cada uno tenga tanta hambre y tanta sed que se coma sus propios excrementos y se beba su propia orina. 13 Luego gritó en hebreo a los judíos que escuchaban desde la muralla: ―¡Escuchen las palabras del gran monarca, el rey de Asiria! 14 No dejen que los engañe Ezequías; nada que él haga los salvará. 15 No dejen que les haga confiar en el SEÑOR diciendo que el SEÑOR no permitirá que el rey de Asiria los conquiste. 16 No escuchen a Ezequías, porque este es el ofrecimiento que el rey de Asiria les hace: Entréguenme un obsequio como prenda de rendición; abran las puertas y salgan, y yo haré que cada uno posea su hacienda, su huerto y agua, 17 hasta que haga los arreglos para llevarlos a un país muy semejante a este, a una tierra de abundantes cosechas de trigo y uvas, un país de abundancia. 18 No permitan que Ezequías los prive de todo esto diciendo que el SEÑOR los librará de mis ejércitos. Los dioses de alguna otra nación, ¿han triunfado jamás sobre los ejércitos del rey de Asiria? 19 ¿No recuerdan lo que les hice a Jamat y a Arfad? ¿Los salvaron acaso sus dioses? ¿Y qué de Sefarvayin y Samaria? ¿Dónde están ahora sus dioses? 20 De todos los dioses de estas tierras, ¿cuáles han librado alguna vez de mi poder a su pueblo? ¡Nómbrenme siquiera uno! ¿Y creen que este Dios suyo pueda librar de mis manos a Jerusalén? ¡No sean ridículos! 21 Pero el pueblo permaneció en silencio, no respondió palabra porque Ezequías les había dicho que no replicaran nada. 22 Entonces Eliaquín, hijo de Jilquías, primer ministro, Sebna, el escriba real, y Joa, hijo de Asaf, secretario real, volvieron a donde estaba Ezequías con la ropa hecha trizas en señal de desesperación y le contaron todo lo ocurrido.

Sennacherib Invades Judah

1 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them. (2 R 18:13; 2 R 18:17; 2 Cr 32:1) 2 And the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh^[1] from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem, with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer’s Field. (Jos 15:20; Jos 15:39; 2 Cr 32:9; Is 7:3)

3 And there came out to him Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder. (Is 22:15; Is 22:20) 4 And the Rabshakeh said to them, “Say to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: On what do you rest this trust of yours? (Is 10:8) 5 Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? In whom do you now trust, that you have rebelled against me? 6 Behold, you are trusting in Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of any man who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. (Ez 29:6) 7 But if you say to me, “We trust in the Lord our God,” is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and to Jerusalem, “You shall worship before this altar”? (Dt 12:2; 2 R 18:4) 8 Come now, make a wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them. 9 How then can you repulse a single captain among the least of my master’s servants, when you trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 10 Moreover, is it without the Lord that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The Lord said to me, “Go up against this land and destroy it.”’” (Is 10:5) 11 Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the wall.” (Esd 4:7; Dn 2:4) 12 But the Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?” 13 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in the language of Judah: “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! 14 Thus says the king: ‘Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you. (2 Cr 32:6; Is 37:10) 15 Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord by saying, “The Lord will surely deliver us. This city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” 16 Do not listen to Hezekiah. For thus says the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me^[2] and come out to me. Then each one of you will eat of his own vine, and each one of his own fig tree, and each one of you will drink the water of his own cistern, 17 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. (2 R 18:11) 18 Beware lest Hezekiah mislead you by saying, “The Lord will deliver us.” Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? (2 R 17:6; Is 37:13; Jer 49:23) 20 Who among all the gods of these lands have delivered their lands out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’” (2 Cr 32:19) 21 But they were silent and answered him not a word, for the king’s command was, “Do not answer him.” 22 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.
