1Esta fue la oración de Ana: «¡Cuánto me ha bendecido! Ahora tengo respuesta para mis enemigos, porque el SEÑOR ha resuelto mi problema. ¡Cuánto se goza mi corazón!2»No hay otro Dios, ni nadie tan santo como el SEÑOR, ni otra roca como nuestro Dios.3»Dejen de actuar con tanto orgullo y arrogancia; el SEÑOR sabe lo que ustedes han hecho, y él juzgará sus acciones.4»Los que eran poderosos han perdido sus fuerzas; los que eran débiles ahora son fuertes.5Los que estaban hartos ahora pasan hambre, los que tenían hambre ahora se sacian. La mujer estéril, ahora tiene siete hijos; la que tenía muchos hijos ya no los tiene.6»El SEÑOR mata, el SEÑOR da vida.7Él empobrece a unos y enriquece a otros; él abate a algunos y enaltece a otros.8Él levanta al pobre desde el polvo, desde el montón de cenizas, y lo sienta entre los príncipes ubicándolo en un lugar de honor. »Porque el SEÑOR tiene dominio sobre la tierra.9Él protegerá a los piadosos, pero los impíos serán silenciados en las tinieblas. Ninguno podrá triunfar por su propia fortaleza.10»Los que pelean contra el SEÑOR serán quebrantados. Él truena contra ellos desde los cielos; él juzga a través de toda la tierra. Él da poderosa fortaleza a su rey, y da gran gloria a su ungido».11Elcaná y su familia regresaron a Ramá sin Samuel; el niño quedó al servicio del SEÑOR, como ayudante de Elí el sacerdote.
Perversidad de los hijos de Elí
12Los hijos de Elí eran hombres impíos que desconocían al SEÑOR y las obligaciones del sacerdocio.13Por ejemplo, cuando alguien estaba ofreciendo un sacrificio, ellos enviaban a un siervo, y mientras la carne del animal estaba cociéndose,14el siervo metía en el caldero o en la olla un tenedor grande de tres dientes, y todo lo que sacaba pertenecía a los hijos de Elí. De esta manera trataban a todos los israelitas que iban a Siló a adorar.15A veces el siervo llegaba aun antes del rito de la quema de la grosura sobre el altar, y tenían que entregarle la carne antes que fuera cocida, para poder usarla para asados.16Si el hombre que ofrecía el sacrificio decía: «Toma cuanto quieras, pero deja primero que se queme la grasa», como la ley lo exige, el siervo respondía: «No, dámela ahora, o la sacaré a la fuerza».17Así que el pecado de estos jóvenes era muy grande delante de los ojos del SEÑOR, porque trataban con menosprecio las ofrendas que el pueblo hacía al SEÑOR.18Samuel, aunque todavía era un niño, prestaba servicio ante el SEÑOR y usaba una túnica de lino similar a la de los sacerdotes.19Cada año su madre le hacía una túnica de lino y se la llevaba cuando iba con su marido a ofrecer el sacrificio.20Antes de que regresaran, Elí bendecía a Elcaná y a Ana, y pedía a Dios que les diera otro hijo que tomara el lugar de este que habían consagrado al SEÑOR.21Y Dios le dio a Ana tres hijos y dos hijas. Mientras tanto, Samuel crecía en el servicio del SEÑOR.22Elí ya estaba muy anciano, pero se daba cuenta de lo que ocurría a su alrededor. Sabía, por ejemplo, que sus hijos estaban seduciendo a las jóvenes que ayudaban a la entrada del santuario.23-24«He estado oyendo quejas terribles contra ustedes —dijo Elí a sus hijos—. Es algo horroroso hacer que el pueblo de Dios peque. No, hijos míos,25el pecado ordinario recibe un fuerte castigo, pero ¿cuánto más los pecados que ustedes cometen contra el SEÑOR?». Sin embargo, ellos no quisieron escuchar a su padre porque el SEÑOR había resuelto que murieran.26El pequeño Samuel, en cambio, iba creciendo en estatura y en gracia ante todos y también ante el SEÑOR.
Profecía contra la familia de Elí
27Un día un profeta vino ante Elí y le dio este mensaje del SEÑOR: «¿No mostré yo mi poder a tus antepasados levitas cuando el pueblo de Israel era esclavo en Egipto?28¿No los escogí de entre todos sus hermanos para que fueran mis sacerdotes y para que sacrificaran sobre mi altar, quemaran el incienso y usaran las vestiduras sacerdotales mientras me servían? ¿No fui yo quien destinó las ofrendas de los sacrificios para ustedes los sacerdotes?29Entonces, ¿por qué tanta codicia en cuanto a las ofrendas que me son ofrecidas? ¿Por qué has honrado más a tus hijos que a mí? Porque tú has dejado que ellos engorden tomando lo mejor de las ofrendas de mi pueblo.30»Por lo tanto, yo, el SEÑOR Dios de Israel, declaro que aunque prometí que tu casa y la casa de tus antepasados llevarían el sacerdocio por siempre, no permitiré que se siga haciendo lo que tú haces. Honraré solamente a los que me honran, y despreciaré a los que me desprecian.31Pondré fin a tu familia para que nunca más sirvan como sacerdotes. Cada miembro de tu familia morirá antes de tiempo. Ninguno llegará a viejo.32Envidiarás la prosperidad que enviaré a mi pueblo. Pero tú y tu familia pasarán angustia y necesidad. Ninguno de ellos llegará a viejo.33Los que queden vivos vivirán con tristeza y dolor, y sus hijos morirán a espada.34Y para probar que lo que he dicho ocurrirá, haré que tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finés, mueran el mismo día.35Yo haré surgir un sacerdote fiel que me servirá y hará lo que yo le diga. And the boy[1] was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli the priest. (1 S 1:19; 1 S 2:18; 1 S 3:1)
Eli’s Worthless Sons
12Now the sons of Eli were worthless men. They did not know the Lord. (Jue 2:10; 1 S 1:16)13The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand,14and he would thrust it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot. All that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there.15Moreover, before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give meat for the priest to roast, for he will not accept boiled meat from you but only raw.” (Lv 3:5; Lv 3:16; Lv 7:23; Lv 7:25; Lv 7:31)16And if the man said to him, “Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish,” he would say, “No, you must give it now, and if not, I will take it by force.”17Thus the sin of the young men was very great in the sight of the Lord, for the men treated the offering of the Lord with contempt. (Gn 6:11; Mal 2:8)18Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy clothed with a linen ephod. (Ex 28:4; 1 S 2:11; 1 S 3:1; 2 S 6:14; 1 Cr 15:27)19And his mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. (1 S 1:3)20Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “May the Lord give you children by this woman for the petition she asked of the Lord.” So then they would return to their home. (1 S 1:28)21Indeed the Lord visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew in the presence of the Lord. (Gn 21:1; Jue 13:24; 1 S 2:26; 1 S 3:19; Lc 1:80; Lc 2:40)
Eli Rebukes His Sons
22Now Eli was very old, and he kept hearing all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who were serving at the entrance to the tent of meeting. (Ex 38:8)23And he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all these people.24No, my sons; it is no good report that I hear the people of the Lord spreading abroad.25If someone sins against a man, God will mediate for him, but if someone sins against the Lord, who can intercede for him?” But they would not listen to the voice of their father, for it was the will of the Lord to put them to death. (Jos 11:20)26Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and also with man. (Lc 2:52)
The Lord Rejects Eli’s Household
27And there came a man of God to Eli and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Did I indeed reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt subject to the house of Pharaoh? (1 R 13:1)28Did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? I gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel. (Ex 28:1; Lv 2:3; Lv 2:10; Lv 6:16; Lv 7:7; Lv 7:34; Lv 10:14; Nm 5:9; Nm 18:1; Nm 18:7; Nm 18:8; 1 S 14:3; 1 S 22:18)29Why then do you scorn[2] my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded for my dwelling, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?’ (Dt 32:15)30Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever,’ but now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. (Ex 27:21; Ex 29:9; Jer 18:9)31Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. (1 S 4:11; 1 S 4:18; 1 S 4:20; 1 S 22:18; 1 R 2:27)32Then in distress you will look with envious eye on all the prosperity that shall be bestowed on Israel, and there shall not be an old man in your house forever. (Jue 18:30; 1 S 4:11; Sal 78:59; Zac 8:4)33The only one of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep his[3] eyes out to grieve his heart, and all the descendants[4] of your house shall die by the sword of men.[5]34And this that shall come upon your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, shall be the sign to you: both of them shall die on the same day. (1 S 4:11; 1 R 13:3)35And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind. And I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before my anointed forever. (1 S 25:28; 2 S 7:11; 2 S 7:27; 2 S 22:51; 1 R 2:35; 1 R 11:38; 1 Cr 29:22; Sal 18:50; Sal 89:20)36And everyone who is left in your house shall come to implore him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread and shall say, “Please put me in one of the priests’ places, that I may eat a morsel of bread.”’”
