1Finalmente el SEÑOR le dijo a Samuel: ―Basta ya de llorar a Saúl, porque lo he rechazado como rey de Israel. Toma un cuerno de aceite de oliva, ve a Belén y busca a un hombre llamado Isaí, porque a uno de sus hijos he escogido para que sea el nuevo rey.2Pero Samuel preguntó: ―¿Cómo? Si Saúl se entera, me matará. ―Lleva contigo una becerra y di que has ido a ofrecer un sacrificio al SEÑOR.3Invita a Isaí al sacrificio y yo te mostraré a cuál de sus hijos debes ungir.4Samuel hizo lo que el SEÑOR le ordenó. Cuando llegó a Belén, los ancianos de la ciudad salieron temblando a su encuentro. ―¿Qué pasa? —le preguntaron—. ¿A qué has venido?5―No pasa nada —contestó Samuel—. He venido a ofrecer un sacrificio al SEÑOR. Purifíquense y acompáñenme al sacrificio. Y realizó el rito de la purificación en favor de Isaí y de sus hijos y los invitó al sacrificio.6Cuando llegaron, Samuel miró a Eliab y pensó: «Este debe ser el hombre que el SEÑOR ha escogido».7Pero el SEÑOR le dijo: ―No juzgues al hombre por su apariencia. No, no es este. Yo no escojo como los hombres lo hacen. Los hombres juzgan por la apariencia exterior, pero yo miro el corazón.8Isaí le presentó entonces a su hijo Abinadab. Pero el SEÑOR le dijo: ―Este tampoco es el escogido.9Isaí le presentó a Sama, pero Samuel dijo: ―No, este tampoco es.10Así le fueron presentando, uno por uno, siete de los hijos de Isaí, pero todos fueron rechazados. El SEÑOR no ha escogido a ninguno de ellos11—le dijo Samuel a Isaí—. ¿Estos son todos los hijos que tienes? ―Sólo falta el menor —replicó Isaí—, pero está en el campo cuidando las ovejas. ―Mándalo a buscar inmediatamente —dijo Samuel— porque no me sentaré a comer hasta que él haya llegado.12Isaí lo mandó a buscar: Era un joven gallardo, trigueño y de aspecto agradable. Y el SEÑOR le dijo: ―Este es, úngelo.13Samuel tomó el aceite de oliva que había traído y lo derramó sobre la cabeza de David delante de sus hermanos. El Espíritu del SEÑOR entonces descendió sobre él y le dio gran poder desde aquel día en adelante. Y Samuel regresó a Ramá.
David al servicio de Saúl
14El Espíritu del SEÑOR se había apartado de Saúl, y en cambio, le había enviado un espíritu que lo atormentaba.15-16Algunos de los servidores de Saúl le sugirieron un remedio. ―¿Por qué no nos autorizas a buscar un buen músico que toque el arpa delante de ti cuando viene el espíritu que te atormenta? La música del arpa te dará tranquilidad y te hará bien.17―Bien —dijo Saúl—. Búsquenme un músico que toque el arpa.18Uno de los cortesanos le dijo que conocía a un joven de Belén hijo de un hombre llamado Isaí, que no sólo era un arpista con talento sino un joven gallardo, valiente, fuerte y juicioso. ―Lo que es más —añadieron—, el SEÑOR está con él.19Saúl envió mensajeros a Isaí pidiéndole que le enviara a su hijo David el pastor,20Isaí respondió enviando no solamente a David, sino también un cabrito, y un burro cargado de panes y un odre de vino.21Desde el instante en que vio a David, Saúl se encariñó con él y lo hizo su escudero,22y le mandó el siguiente recado a Isaí: «Deja que David se quede conmigo, porque me agrada».23Y cada vez que el espíritu que lo atormentaba, de parte de Dios, molestaba a Saúl, David tocaba el arpa y Saúl se sentía mejor, y el espíritu malo que lo turbaba se apartaba de él.
1The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” (1 S 10:1; 1 S 15:23; 1 S 15:26; 1 S 15:35; Sal 78:70; Sal 89:19; Hch 13:22)2And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ (1 S 9:12; 1 S 20:29)3And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.” (1 S 9:16)4Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you come peaceably?” (1 S 21:1; 1 R 2:13; 2 R 9:22)5And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. (Jos 3:5)6When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” (1 S 17:13)7But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” (1 R 8:39; 1 Cr 28:9; Sal 7:9; Sal 147:10; Jer 11:20; Jer 17:10; Jer 20:12; Hch 1:24)8Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” (1 S 17:13)9Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” (1 S 16:8)10And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.”11Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest,[1] but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” (1 S 17:13; 2 S 7:8; 2 S 13:3; 1 Cr 2:13; Sal 78:70)12And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” (1 S 9:17; 1 S 17:42)13Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah. (Jue 3:10; 1 S 10:1; 1 S 10:6; 1 S 10:10; 1 S 11:6; 1 S 16:1; Sal 89:20)
David in Saul’s Service
14Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the Lord tormented him. (Jue 9:23; Jue 16:20; 1 S 18:10; 1 S 18:12; 1 S 19:9; 1 S 28:15)15And Saul’s servants said to him, “Behold now, a harmful spirit from God is tormenting you.16Let our lord now command your servants who are before you to seek out a man who is skillful in playing the lyre, and when the harmful spirit from God is upon you, he will play it, and you will be well.” (1 S 16:21; 1 S 18:10; 1 S 19:9; 1 R 10:8; 2 R 3:15)17So Saul said to his servants, “Provide for me a man who can play well and bring him to me.”18One of the young men answered, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the Lord is with him.” (1 S 3:19; 1 S 17:32; 1 S 17:34; 1 S 18:12; 1 S 18:14)19Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the sheep.” (1 S 16:11; 1 S 17:15; 1 S 17:34)20And Jesse took a donkey laden with bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul. (1 S 17:18)21And David came to Saul and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer. (1 S 16:16)22And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight.”23And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him. (1 S 16:14; 1 S 16:16)
