1Poco después Najás condujo el ejército de los amonitas contra la ciudad israelita de Jabés de Galaad. Pero los habitantes de Jabés le suplicaron la paz. ―Pon las condiciones y te serviremos —le propusieron.2―Bien —contestó Najás—, pero con una condición: le sacaré el ojo derecho a cada uno de ustedes como una afrenta para Israel.3―Danos siete días para ver si podemos obtener ayuda —respondieron los ancianos de Jabés—. Si ninguno de nuestros hermanos viene a ayudarnos, aceptaremos tus condiciones.4Cuando los mensajeros llegaron a Guibeá, ciudad de Saúl, y contaron lo que ocurría, todos se pusieron a llorar.5Saúl estaba arando en el campo, y cuando regresó al pueblo preguntó: «¿Qué pasa? ¿Por qué están llorando?». Al enterarse de lo que habían mandado a decir los de Jabés,6el Espíritu de Dios vino poderosamente sobre Saúl, y se enojó mucho.7Tomó dos bueyes, los cortó en pedazos, y los envió por todo Israel con este mensaje: «Esto es lo que le ocurrirá a los bueyes de cada uno que se niegue a seguir a Saúl y a Samuel a la batalla». Y Dios hizo que el pueblo sintiera temor por la ira de Saúl, y acudieron como un solo hombre.8Él los contó en Bézec y vio que eran trescientos mil, además de treinta mil que vinieron de Judá.9Entonces envió los mensajeros de regreso a Jabés de Galaad para que dijeran: «Los rescataremos antes de mañana al mediodía». ¡Hubo gran alegría en toda la ciudad cuando llegó aquel mensaje!10Y los de Jabés mandaron a decir a sus enemigos: «Nos rendiremos. Mañana saldremos y podrán hacer con nosotros lo que quieran».11Al día siguiente, muy temprano, Saúl llegó. Tras dividir al ejército en tres columnas, lanzó un ataque sorpresivo sobre los amonitas y durante toda la mañana estuvo diezmando al enemigo. La persecución fue tan tenaz, que no quedaron juntos ni siquiera dos.
Saúl es confirmado como rey
12El pueblo le dijo a Samuel: ―¿Dónde están los que decían que Saúl no podría ser nuestro rey? Tráiganlos y los mataremos.13Pero Saúl respondió: ―Nadie será ejecutado hoy, porque el SEÑOR ha salvado a Israel.14Y Samuel le dijo al pueblo: ―Vengan, vamos a Gilgal y confirmemos a Saúl como rey.15En Gilgal, en una ceremonia solemne delante del SEÑOR, coronaron rey a Saúl, y ofrecieron sacrificios de paz al SEÑOR. Saúl y todo Israel estaban llenos de felicidad.
1Then Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh-gilead, and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a treaty with us, and we will serve you.” (Gn 26:28; Ex 23:32; Ex 34:12; Ex 34:15; Dt 7:2; Jue 21:8; 1 S 12:12; 1 R 20:34; Ez 17:13)2But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make a treaty with you, that I gouge out all your right eyes, and thus bring disgrace on all Israel.” (Gn 34:14; Nm 16:14; 1 S 17:26)3The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days’ respite that we may send messengers through all the territory of Israel. Then, if there is no one to save us, we will give ourselves up to you.”4When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul, they reported the matter in the ears of the people, and all the people wept aloud. (Jue 2:4; Jue 21:2; 1 S 10:26)5Now, behold, Saul was coming from the field behind the oxen. And Saul said, “What is wrong with the people, that they are weeping?” So they told him the news of the men of Jabesh.6And the Spirit of God rushed upon Saul when he heard these words, and his anger was greatly kindled. (1 S 10:6; 1 S 10:10)7He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces and sent them throughout all the territory of Israel by the hand of the messengers, saying, “Whoever does not come out after Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen!” Then the dread of the Lord fell upon the people, and they came out as one man. (Jue 19:29; Jue 20:1; Jue 21:5; Jue 21:8; Jue 21:10)8When he mustered them at Bezek, the people of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. (Jue 1:5; Jue 20:15; 2 S 24:9)9And they said to the messengers who had come, “Thus shall you say to the men of Jabesh-gilead: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you shall have salvation.’” When the messengers came and told the men of Jabesh, they were glad. (1 S 11:13)10Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will give ourselves up to you, and you may do to us whatever seems good to you.” (1 S 11:3)11And the next day Saul put the people in three companies. And they came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch and struck down the Ammonites until the heat of the day. And those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together. (Jue 7:16; 1 S 31:11)
The Kingdom Is Renewed
12Then the people said to Samuel, “Who is it that said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring the men, that we may put them to death.” (1 S 10:27; Lc 19:27)13But Saul said, “Not a man shall be put to death this day, for today the Lord has worked salvation in Israel.” (Ex 14:13; 1 S 11:9; 1 S 19:5; 2 S 19:22)14Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us go to Gilgal and there renew the kingdom.”15So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal. There they sacrificed peace offerings before the Lord, and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly. (Jue 11:11; 1 S 10:8; 1 S 10:17; 1 S 15:33)
