1 Hierauf redete Gott alle diese Worte und sprach: 2 »Ich bin der HERR, dein Gott^[1], der dich aus dem Land Ägypten hinausgeführt hat, aus dem Diensthause^[2]. 3 Du sollst keine anderen Götter haben neben mir! 4 Du sollst dir kein Gottesbild anfertigen noch irgendein Abbild weder von dem, was oben im Himmel, noch von dem, was unten auf der Erde, noch von dem, was im Wasser unterhalb der Erde ist! 5 Du sollst dich vor ihnen nicht niederwerfen und ihnen nicht dienen^[3]! Denn ich, der HERR, dein Gott, bin ein eifriger^[4] Gott, der die Verschuldung der Väter heimsucht an den Kindern, an den Enkeln und Urenkeln bei denen, die mich hassen, 6 der aber Gnade erweist an Tausenden von Nachkommen^[5] derer, die mich lieben und meine Gebote halten. 7 Du sollst den Namen des HERRN, deines Gottes, nicht mißbrauchen! Denn der HERR wird den nicht ungestraft lassen, der seinen Namen mißbraucht. 8 Gedenke des Sabbattages, daß du ihn heilig hältst! 9 Sechs Tage sollst du arbeiten und alle deine Geschäfte verrichten! 10 Aber der siebte Tag ist ein Feiertag^[6] zu Ehren des HERRN, deines Gottes: da darfst du keinerlei Geschäft verrichten, weder du selbst noch dein Sohn oder deine Tochter, weder dein Knecht, noch deine Magd, noch dein Vieh, noch der Fremdling, der bei dir in deinen Ortschaften weilt! 11 Denn in sechs Tagen hat der HERR den Himmel und die Erde geschaffen, das Meer und alles, was in ihnen ist; aber am siebten Tage hat er geruht; darum hat der HERR den Sabbattag gesegnet und ihn für heilig erklärt. 12 Ehre deinen Vater und deine Mutter, damit du lange lebst in dem Lande, das der HERR, dein Gott, dir geben wird! 13 Du sollst nicht töten! 14 Du sollst nicht ehebrechen! 15 Du sollst nicht stehlen! 16 Du sollst kein falsches Zeugnis ablegen gegen deinen Nächsten! 17 Du sollst nicht begehren deines Nächsten Haus! Du sollst nicht begehren deines Nächsten Weib, noch seinen Knecht, noch seine Magd, noch sein Rind, noch seinen Esel, noch irgend etwas, was deinem Nächsten gehört.« 18 Als aber das ganze Volk die Donnerschläge und die flammenden Blitze, den Posaunenschall und den rauchenden Berg wahrnahm, da zitterten sie und blieben in der Ferne stehen 19 und sagten zu Mose: »Rede du mit uns, dann wollen wir zuhören; Gott aber möge nicht mit uns reden, sonst müssen wir sterben!« 20 Da antwortete Mose dem Volk: »Fürchtet euch nicht! Denn Gott ist nur deshalb gekommen, um euch auf die Probe zu stellen und damit die Furcht vor ihm euch gegenwärtig bleibt, auf daß ihr nicht sündigt.« 21 So blieb denn das Volk in der Ferne stehen; Mose aber trat an das dunkle Gewölk heran, in welchem Gott war. 22 Hierauf gebot der HERR dem Mose: »So sollst du zu den Israeliten sagen: ›Ihr habt selbst gesehen, daß ich vom Himmel her mit euch geredet habe. 23 Darum sollt ihr keine anderen Götter neben mir anfertigen: Götter von Silber und Götter von Gold sollt ihr euch nicht anfertigen! 24 Einen Altar von Erde sollst du mir herstellen und auf ihm deine Brandopfer und Heilsopfer, dein Kleinvieh und deine Rinder darbringen! An jeder Stätte, wo ich ein Gedächtnis meines Namens stiften werde, will ich zu dir kommen und dich segnen. 25 Willst du mir aber einen Altar von Steinen errichten, so darfst du ihn nicht von behauenen Steinen bauen! Denn sobald du mit deinem Meißel über sie hingefahren bist, hast du sie entweiht. 26 Auch darfst du nicht auf Stufen zu meinem Altar hinaufsteigen, damit deine Blöße nicht vor ihm sichtbar wird!‹«

God gives his people the Ten Commandments

1 Here are all the words God spoke. He said, 2 ‘I am the LORD your God. I brought you out of Egypt. That is the land where you were slaves. 3 ‘Do not put any other gods in place of me. 4 ‘Do not make for yourself statues of gods that look like anything in the sky. They may not look like anything on the earth or in the waters either. 5 Do not bow down to them or worship them. I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God. I cause the sins of the parents to affect their children. I will cause the sins of those who hate me to affect even their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 6 But for all time to come I show love to all those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 ‘Do not misuse the name of the LORD your God. The LORD will find guilty anyone who misuses his name. 8 ‘Remember to keep the Sabbath day holy. 9 Do all your work in six days. 10 But the seventh day is a sabbath to honour the LORD your God. Do not do any work on that day. The same command applies to your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and your animals. It also applies to any outsiders who live in your towns. 11 In six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea and everything in them. But he rested on the seventh day. So the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 ‘Honour your father and mother. Then you will live a long time in the land the LORD your God is giving you. 13 ‘Do not murder. 14 ‘Do not commit adultery. 15 ‘Do not steal. 16 ‘Do not be a false witness against your neighbour. 17 ‘Do not want to have anything your neighbour owns. Do not want to have your neighbour’s house, wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey.’ 18 The people saw the thunder and lightning. They heard the trumpet. They saw the mountain covered with smoke. They trembled with fear and stayed a long way off. 19 They said to Moses, ‘Speak to us yourself. Then we’ll listen. But don’t let God speak to us. If he does, we’ll die.’ 20 Moses said to the people, ‘Don’t be afraid. God has come to test you. He wants you to have respect for him. That will keep you from sinning.’ 21 Moses approached the thick darkness where God was. But the people remained a long way off.

Worship the Lord

22 Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Here is what you must tell the people of Israel. Say to them, “You have seen for yourselves what I said to you from heaven. 23 Do not put any other gods in place of me. Do not make silver or gold statues of them for yourselves. 24 ‘ “Make an altar out of soil for me. Sacrifice your burnt offerings and friendship offerings on it. Sacrifice your sheep, goats and cattle on it. I will come to you and bless you everywhere I cause my name to be honoured. 25 If you make an altar out of stones to honour me, do not build it with blocks of stone. You will make it ‘unclean’ if you use a tool on it. 26 Do not walk up steps to my altar. If you do, someone might see your naked body under your robes.”
