1 Dann segnete Gott Noah und seine Söhne mit folgenden Worten: »Seid fruchtbar und mehret euch und füllet die Erde. 2 Die Furcht und der Schrecken vor euch soll auf allem Getier der Erde liegen und auf allen Vögeln des Himmels! Alles, was sich auf dem Erdboden^[1] regt, auch alle Fische des Meeres: in eure Gewalt sind sie gegeben. 3 Alles, was sich regt und was da lebt, soll euch zur Nahrung dienen: wie (einstmals) die grünenden Pflanzen, so weise ich euch (jetzt) alles zu. 4 Nur Fleisch, das noch seine Seele^[2], nämlich sein Blut, in sich hat, dürft ihr nicht essen. 5 Jedoch euer eigenes Blut, um wessen Leben es sich auch bei euch handle, will ich rächen; an jedem Tiere will ich es rächen; und auch an jedem Menschen, an euch untereinander, will ich das Leben jedes Menschen rächen: 6 Wer Menschenblut vergießt, dessen Blut soll wieder durch Menschen vergossen werden; denn nach seinem Bilde hat Gott den Menschen geschaffen. 7 Ihr aber – seid fruchtbar und mehret euch, wimmelt^[3] auf der Erde und werdet zahlreich auf ihr!« 8 Weiter sagte Gott zu Noah und seinen Söhnen, die bei ihm waren, folgendes: 9 »Ich will (jetzt) einen Bund mit euch aufrichten^[4] und mit eurer Nachkommenschaft, die nach euch sein wird, 10 auch mit allen lebenden Wesen, die bei euch sind, mit den Vögeln, den zahmen und allen wilden Tieren, die bei euch sind, nämlich mit allen denen, die aus der Arche herausgegangen sind, mit allem Getier der Erde. 11 Ich schließe also meinen Bund mit euch dahin, daß hinfort niemals wieder alle lebenden Geschöpfe durch das Wasser einer Sintflut vertilgt werden sollen und daß niemals wieder eine Sintflut eintreten soll, um die Erde zu verheeren!« 12 Dann fuhr Gott fort: »Dies soll das Zeichen des Bundes sein, den ich zwischen mir und euch und allen lebenden Wesen, die bei euch sind, auf ewige Zeiten festsetze: 13 meinen Bogen stelle ich in die Wolken; der soll das Zeichen des Bundes zwischen mir und der Erde sein! 14 Wenn ich hinfort Gewölk über der Erde sammle und der Bogen in den Wolken sichtbar wird, 15 dann will ich meines Bundes gedenken, der zwischen mir und euch und allen lebenden Wesen jeglicher Fleischesart besteht; und das Wasser soll niemals wieder zu einer Sintflut werden, um alle lebenden Geschöpfe zu vertilgen. 16 Nein, wenn der Bogen in den Wolken steht, so will ich ihn anschauen, um des ewigen Bundes zwischen Gott und allen lebenden Wesen von jeglicher Fleischesart, die auf der Erde ist, zu gedenken.« 17 Und Gott schloß mit den Worten an Noah: »Dies ist das Zeichen des Bundes, den ich zwischen mir und allen lebenden Wesen auf der Erde aufgerichtet^[5] habe.« 18 Die Söhne Noahs, die aus der Arche gingen, waren Sem, Ham und Japheth; Ham aber ist der Vater Kanaans. 19 Diese drei waren die Söhne Noahs, und von diesen aus ist die ganze Erde bevölkert worden^[6]. 20 Noah aber wurde nun ein Landmann und legte auch einen Weinberg an. 21 Als er dann aber von dem Weine trank, wurde er trunken und lag entblößt in seinem Zelt. 22 Als nun Ham, der Vater Kanaans, seinen Vater entblößt hatte daliegen sehen, erzählte er es seinen beiden Brüdern draußen. 23 Da nahmen Sem und Japheth das Obergewand (ihres Vaters), legten es beide gemeinsam auf ihre Schultern, traten rückwärts hinzu und bedeckten ihren entblößten Vater damit; ihr Gesicht aber war dabei abgewandt, so daß sie die Blöße ihres Vaters nicht sahen. 24 Als nun Noah von seinem Rausch erwachte und erfuhr, wie sein jüngster Sohn sich gegen ihn benommen hatte, 25 rief er aus: »Verflucht sei Kanaan! Der niedrigste Knecht soll er seinen Brüdern sein!« 26 Dann fuhr er fort: »Gepriesen sei der HERR, der Gott Sems! Kanaan aber soll sein Knecht sein! 27 Weiten Raum schaffe Gott dem Japheth, und er wohne in den Zelten Sems! Kanaan aber soll sein Knecht sein!« 28 Nach der Sintflut lebte Noah noch dreihundertfünfzig Jahre; 29 demnach betrug die ganze Lebenszeit Noahs neunhundertundfünfzig Jahre; dann starb er.

God makes a covenant with Noah

1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons. He said to them, ‘Have children so that there are many of you. Fill the earth. 2 All the land animals will be afraid of you. All the birds in the sky will be afraid of you. Every creature that moves along the ground will be afraid of you. So will every fish in the seas. Every living thing is put under your control. 3 Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. I have already given you the green plants for food. Now I am giving you everything. 4 ‘But you must not eat meat that still has blood in it. 5 I will certainly hold someone accountable if you are murdered. I will even hold animals accountable if they kill you. I will also hold anyone accountable who murders another person. 6 ‘Anyone who murders a human being will be killed by a human being. That is because I have made human beings so that they are like me. 7 Have children so that there will be many of you. Multiply and become many on the earth.’ 8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons who were with him. He said, 9 ‘I am now making my covenant with you and with all your children who will be born after you. 10 I am making it also with every living creature that was with you in the ark. I am making my covenant with the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals. I am making it with all the creatures that came out of the ark with you. In fact, I am making it with every living thing on earth. 11 Here is my covenant I am making with you. The waters of a flood will never again destroy all life. A flood will never again destroy the earth.’ 12 God continued, ‘My covenant is between me and you and every living creature with you. It is a covenant for all time to come. Here is the sign of the covenant I am making. 13 I have put my rainbow in the clouds. It will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Sometimes when I bring clouds over the earth, a rainbow will appear in them. 15 Then I will remember my covenant between me and you and every kind of living creature. The waters will never again become a flood to destroy all life. 16 When the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it. I will remember that my covenant will last for ever. It is a covenant between me and every kind of living creature on earth.’ 17 So God said to Noah, ‘The rainbow is the sign of my covenant. I have made my covenant between me and all life on earth.’

The sons of Noah

18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan. 19 The people who were scattered over the earth came from Noah’s three sons. 20 Noah was a man who farmed the land. He decided to plant a field that produced grapes for making wine. 21 When he drank some of the wine, it made him drunk. Then he lay down inside his tent without any clothes on. 22 Ham saw his father naked. Then Ham, the father of Canaan, went outside and told his two brothers. 23 But Shem and Japheth picked up a piece of clothing and laid it across their shoulders. Then they walked backwards into the tent. They covered their father’s body. They turned their faces away because they didn’t want to see their father naked. 24 Then Noah woke up from his sleep that was caused by the wine. He found out what his youngest son had done to him. 25 He said, ‘May a curse be put on Canaan! He will be the lowest of slaves to his brothers.’ 26 Noah also said, ‘May the LORD, the God of Shem, be praised. May Canaan be the slave of Shem. 27 May God add land to Japheth’s territory. May Japheth live in the tents of Shem. And may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.’ 28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years. 29 Noah lived a total of 950 years. And then he died.
