Auf göttliche Anweisung zieht Josua gegen Ai und legt einen Hinterhalt im Westen der Stadt

1 Hierauf sagte der HERR zu Josua: »Fürchte dich nicht und sei ohne Angst! Nimm das gesamte Kriegsvolk mit dir und mache dich auf, ziehe gegen Ai hinauf: hiermit gebe ich den König von Ai samt seinem Volk, seiner Stadt und seinem Lande in deine Gewalt. 2 Du sollst mit Ai und seinem König so verfahren, wie du mit Jericho und seinem König verfahren bist; jedoch die dortige Beute und das Vieh dürft ihr für euch behalten. Lege dir einen Hinterhalt gegen die Stadt auf ihrer Westseite!« 3 Da machte sich Josua mit dem gesamten Kriegsvolk auf, um gegen Ai hinaufzuziehen. Er wählte aber 30000 Mann tapfere Krieger aus und sandte sie bei Nacht ab, 4 nachdem er ihnen folgenden Befehl gegeben hatte: »Wisset wohl: ihr sollt euch gegen die Stadt in den Hinterhalt legen, und zwar auf der Westseite der Stadt; entfernt euch nicht zu weit von der Stadt und haltet euch allesamt bereit! 5 Ich aber und das ganze Kriegsvolk, das bei mir ist, werden gegen die Stadt anrücken, und wenn sie dann wie das vorige Mal einen Ausfall gegen uns machen, wollen wir vor ihnen fliehen. 6 Sie werden dann herauskommen, um uns zu verfolgen, bis wir sie von der Stadt ganz abgezogen haben; denn sie werden denken: ›Die fliehen vor uns wie das vorige Mal‹; und wir wollen ja auch wirklich vor ihnen fliehen. 7 Dann müßt ihr aus dem Hinterhalt hervorbrechen und euch der Stadt bemächtigen; denn der HERR, euer Gott, wird sie in eure Gewalt geben. 8 Wenn ihr aber die Stadt eingenommen habt, so steckt sie in Brand: nach dem Gebot des HERRN sollt ihr verfahren! Das sind meine Befehle für euch.« 9 Als Josua sie so entlassen hatte, zogen sie in den Hinterhalt und nahmen Stellung zwischen Bethel und Ai, und zwar auf der Westseite von Ai, während Josua jene Nacht inmitten des übrigen Kriegsvolkes verbrachte. 10 Josua machte sich dann am folgenden Morgen früh auf und zog, nachdem er das Kriegsvolk gemustert hatte, mit den Ältesten^[1] der Israeliten an der Spitze des Heeres gegen Ai hinauf. 11 Das gesamte Kriegsvolk, das bei ihm war, zog hinauf und rückte heran und kam vor der Stadt an; sie lagerten nördlich von Ai, so daß das Tal zwischen ihnen und Ai lag. 12 [Er hatte aber etwa fünftausend Mann genommen und sie als Hinterhalt zwischen Bethel und Ai, auf der Westseite der Stadt, Stellung nehmen lassen. 13 Dann stellten sie das Volk auf, das ganze Heer, das sich nördlich von der Stadt befand, und dessen Hinterhalt westlich von der Stadt; Josua aber begab sich in jener Nacht mitten in das Tal.]

Verlauf des Kampfes; Verbrennung der unbewachten Stadt

14 Als nun der König von Ai dies sah, machten sich die Männer der Stadt in der Frühe eilends auf und zogen aus, den Israeliten zum Kampf entgegen, er und sein ganzes Volk, an den bestimmten Ort vor der Steppe, ohne zu wissen, daß ihm auf der Westseite der Stadt ein Hinterhalt gelegt war. 15 Da ließen sich Josua und ganz Israel von ihnen schlagen und flohen in der Richtung nach der Steppe zu. 16 Darauf wurde das gesamte Volk, das noch in der Stadt war, zu ihrer Verfolgung aufgeboten, und sie verfolgten Josua und ließen sich so von der Stadt weglocken: 17 kein Mann blieb in Ai [und Bethel] zurück, der nicht zur Verfolgung der Israeliten ausgezogen wäre; die Stadt aber ließen sie hinter sich offen stehen und verfolgten die Israeliten. 18 Da sagte der HERR zu Josua: »Strecke die Lanze, die du in der Hand hast, gegen Ai aus, denn ich gebe es in deine Gewalt.« Da streckte Josua die Lanze, die er in der Hand hatte, gegen die Stadt aus. 19 Nun verließ der Hinterhalt in aller Eile seinen Standort und gelangte, als Josua seine Hand ausgestreckt hatte, im Lauf zur Stadt, die sie einnahmen und sofort in Brand steckten. 20 Als nun die Aiten sich umwandten und den Rauch von der Stadt zum Himmel aufsteigen sahen, hatten sie keine Möglichkeit mehr, hierhin oder dorthin zu fliehen; denn das israelitische Heer, das nach der Wüste hin geflohen war, wandte sich gegen seine Verfolger um. 21 Denn als Josua und alle Israeliten sahen, daß der Hinterhalt die Stadt eingenommen hatte und daß der Rauch von der Stadt aufstieg, machten sie kehrt und schlugen die Aiten. 22 Jene anderen aber waren ihnen aus der Stadt entgegengezogen, so daß sich die Aiten mitten zwischen den Israeliten befanden, da die einen von dieser, die anderen von jener Seite kamen; und sie machten sie nieder, bis kein einziger von ihnen übrig war, der sich hätte retten oder entfliehen können. 23 Den König von Ai aber nahmen sie lebendig gefangen und brachten ihn zu Josua.

Vollziehung des Bannes an der Stadt; der König getötet und bis zum Abend aufgehängt

24 Als nun die Israeliten alle Bewohner von Ai auf dem freien Felde und in der Wüste, wohin die sie verfolgt hatten, niedergemacht hatten und diese alle bis auf den letzten Mann durch das Schwert gefallen waren, da wandten sich alle Israeliten wieder gegen Ai und machten alle Einwohner ohne Gnade nieder. 25 Die Zahl aller, die an diesem Tage fielen, Männer und Weiber, betrug zwölftausend, die ganze Einwohnerschaft von Ai. 26 Josua hatte nämlich seine Hand, die er mit der Lanze ausgestreckt hatte, nicht eher zurückgezogen, als bis der Bann an allen Bewohnern von Ai vollstreckt war. 27 Nur das Vieh und die Beute dieser Stadt behielten die Israeliten für sich, nach der Weisung, die der HERR dem Josua erteilt hatte. 28 Josua verbrannte dann Ai und machte es für ewige Zeiten zu einem Schutthaufen, zu einer wüsten Stätte, bis auf den heutigen Tag. 29 Den König von Ai aber ließ er bis zur Abendzeit an einen Baum^[2] hängen; doch bei Sonnenuntergang nahm man seinen Leichnam auf Befehl Josuas von dem Baume ab und warf ihn an den Eingang des Stadttores, wo man über ihm einen großen Steinhaufen errichtete, der dort noch bis zum heutigen Tage vorhanden ist. 30 Damals baute Josua dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, einen Altar auf dem Berge Ebal, 31 wie Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, den Israeliten geboten hatte, wie im Gesetzbuch Moses geschrieben steht (2.Mose 20,25), einen Altar aus unbehauenen Steinen, an die noch kein eisernes Werkzeug gekommen war; und sie brachten auf ihm dem HERRN Brandopfer dar und schlachteten Dankopfer. 32 Dann schrieb er dort auf Steine eine Abschrift des mosaischen Gesetzes, das (Mose) einst in Gegenwart der Israeliten geschrieben hatte. 33 Und ganz Israel mit seinen Ältesten und Obmännern und seinen Richtern stand zu beiden Seiten der Lade den levitischen Priestern gegenüber, welche die Bundeslade des HERRN zu tragen hatten, sowohl die Fremdlinge als auch die Einheimischen, die eine Hälfte von ihnen nach dem Berge Garizim zu, die andere Hälfte nach dem Berge Ebal hin, wie Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, einstmals geboten hatte, das Volk Israel zu segnen. (5Mo 1,15) 34 Darnach las Josua alle Worte des Gesetzes laut vor, den Segen wie den Fluch, genau so, wie es im Gesetzbuch geschrieben steht: 35 es gab kein Wort von allem, was Mose geboten hatte, das Josua nicht vor der ganzen Versammlung der Israeliten, auch vor den Frauen und Kindern und den Fremdlingen, die unter ihnen mitzogen, laut vorgelesen hätte.

The Fall of Ai

1 And the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not fear and do not be dismayed. Take all the fighting men with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, his city, and his land. (5Mo 1,21; 5Mo 7,18; 5Mo 31,8; Jos 1,9; Jos 2,24; Jos 6,2; Jos 10,25)

2 And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king. Only its spoil and its livestock you shall take as plunder for yourselves. Lay an ambush against the city, behind it.” (5Mo 20,14; Jos 6,21; Jos 8,27) 3 So Joshua and all the fighting men arose to go up to Ai. And Joshua chose 30,000 mighty men of valor and sent them out by night. 4 And he commanded them, “Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind it. Do not go very far from the city, but all of you remain ready. (Ri 20,29) 5 And I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. And when they come out against us just as before, we shall flee before them. (Jos 7,5) 6 And they will come out after us, until we have drawn them away from the city. And they went to the place of ambush and lay between Bethel and Ai, to the west of Ai, but Joshua spent that night among the people. 10 Joshua arose early in the morning and mustered the people and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai. 11 And all the fighting men who were with him went up and drew near before the city and encamped on the north side of Ai, with a ravine between them and Ai. (Jos 8,5) 12 He took about 5,000 men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city. 13 So they stationed the forces, the main encampment that was north of the city and its rear guard west of the city. But Joshua spent that night in the valley. 14 And as soon as the king of Ai saw this, he and all his people, the men of the city, hurried and went out early to the appointed place^[1] toward the Arabah to meet Israel in battle. But he did not know that there was an ambush against him behind the city. (5Mo 1,1; Ri 20,34) 15 And Joshua and all Israel pretended to be beaten before them and fled in the direction of the wilderness. (Ri 20,36) 16 So all the people who were in the city were called together to pursue them, and as they pursued Joshua they were drawn away from the city. (Jos 8,6) 17 Not a man was left in Ai or Bethel who did not go out after Israel. They left the city open and pursued Israel. 18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” And Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city. (Jos 8,26) 19 And the men in the ambush rose quickly out of their place, and as soon as he had stretched out his hand, they ran and entered the city and captured it. And they hurried to set the city on fire. 20 So when the men of Ai looked back, behold, the smoke of the city went up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that, for the people who fled to the wilderness turned back against the pursuers. 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had captured the city, and that the smoke of the city went up, then they turned back and struck down the men of Ai. 22 And the others came out from the city against them, so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side. And Israel struck them down, until there was left none that survived or escaped. (5Mo 7,2) 23 But the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him near to Joshua. 24 When Israel had finished killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the open wilderness where they pursued them, and all of them to the very last had fallen by the edge of the sword, all Israel returned to Ai and struck it down with the edge of the sword. 25 And all who fell that day, both men and women, were 12,000, all the people of Ai. 26 But Joshua did not draw back his hand with which he stretched out the javelin until he had devoted all the inhabitants of Ai to destruction.^[2] (Jos 8,18) 27 Only the livestock and the spoil of that city Israel took as their plunder, according to the word of the Lord that he commanded Joshua. (Jos 8,2) 28 So Joshua burned Ai and made it forever a heap of ruins, as it is to this day. (5Mo 13,16) 29 And he hanged the king of Ai on a tree until evening. And at sunset Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city and raised over it a great heap of stones, which stands there to this day. Joshua Renews the Covenant

30 At that time Joshua built an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel, on Mount Ebal, (2Mo 20,24; 5Mo 27,4) 31 just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the people of Israel, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, “an altar of uncut stones, upon which no man has wielded an iron tool.” And they offered on it burnt offerings to the Lord and sacrificed peace offerings. 32 And there, in the presence of the people of Israel, he wrote on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he had written. (5Mo 27,2) 33 And all Israel, sojourner as well as native born, with their elders and officers and their judges, stood on opposite sides of the ark before the Levitical priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, half of them in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded at the first, to bless the people of Israel.
