1Als nun alle Könige der Amoriter, die jenseits des Jordans nach Westen hin wohnten, und alle Könige der Kanaanäer an der Meeresküste die Kunde erhielten, daß der HERR das Wasser des Jordans vor den Israeliten hatte vertrocknen lassen, bis sie hinübergezogen waren, da schwand ihnen alles Vertrauen, und sie hatten den Israeliten gegenüber keinen Mut mehr.2Damals gebot der HERR dem Josua: »Fertige dir Steinmesser an und beschneide wiederum die Israeliten zum zweitenmal!«3Da machte sich Josua Steinmesser und beschnitt mit ihnen die Israeliten am Hügel Araloth[1].4Der Grund aber, weshalb Josua die Beschneidung vornahm, war folgender: Das gesamte Volk männlichen Geschlechts, das aus Ägypten ausgezogen war, alle Kriegsleute, waren nach ihrem Auszug aus Ägypten während der Wanderung in der Wüste gestorben.5Das ganze Volk nämlich, welches auszog, war beschnitten gewesen; aber das gesamte Volk, das nach dem Auszug aus Ägypten während der Wanderung in der Wüste geboren war, hatte die Beschneidung nicht empfangen.6Denn vierzig Jahre lang waren die Israeliten in der Wüste gewandert, bis die Gesamtheit der Kriegsleute nach dem Auszug aus Ägypten weggestorben war, weil sie den Weisungen des HERRN nicht nachgekommen waren; deshalb hatte der HERR ihnen geschworen, er wolle sie das Land nicht sehen lassen, das er uns, wie er ihren Vätern zugeschworen hatte, geben wollte, ein Land, das von Milch und Honig überfließt.7Aber ihre Söhne, die der HERR an ihrer Statt hatte aufwachsen lassen, diese beschnitt jetzt Josua; denn sie waren unbeschnitten geblieben, weil man sie während der Wanderung nicht beschnitten hatte.8Als nun die Beschneidung am ganzen Volke vorgenommen worden war, blieben sie an Ort und Stelle gelagert, bis sie genesen waren.9Der HERR aber sagte zu Josua: »Heute habe ich die ägyptische Schmach[2] von euch abgewälzt.« Daher heißt dieser Ort Gilgal[3] bis auf den heutigen Tag.
Erste Passahfeier in Kanaan; Aufhören des Manna
10Während nun die Israeliten in Gilgal gelagert waren, feierten sie das Passah am vierzehnten Tage des Monats am Abend in den Steppen von Jericho11und aßen am anderen Tage nach dem Passah von den Erzeugnissen des Landes, nämlich ungesäuertes Brot und geröstetes Getreide, an eben diesem Tage.12Da hörte am folgenden Morgen das Manna auf, weil sie jetzt von den Erzeugnissen des Landes zu essen hatten, und es gab hinfort für die Israeliten kein Manna mehr, sondern sie nährten sich in jenem Jahre von den Erzeugnissen des Landes Kanaan.
Josua wird durch die Erscheinung des göttlichen Heerführers ermutigt
13Während sich nun Josua bei Jericho befand, begab es sich, daß er seine Augen aufschlug und einen Mann, der ein gezücktes Schwert in der Hand hatte, sich gegenüber stehen sah. Josua ging auf ihn zu und fragte ihn: »Gehörst du zu uns oder zu unsern Feinden?«14Da antwortete er: »Nein, sondern ich bin der Oberste des Heeres des HERRN; soeben bin ich gekommen.« Da warf sich Josua auf sein Angesicht nieder, um ihm zu huldigen, und fragte ihn dann: »Was hat mein Herr seinem Knecht zu sagen?«15Da antwortete der Heeresoberste des HERRN dem Josua: »Ziehe dir die Schuhe aus von deinen Füßen! Denn die Stätte, auf der du stehst, ist heilig.« Da tat Josua so.
1As soon as all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and there was no longer any spirit in them because of the people of Israel. (4Mo 14,29; 4Mo 26,64; 5Mo 2,16; Ps 106,26; 1Kor 10,5; Hebr 3,17)5Though all the people who came out had been circumcised, yet all the people who were born on the way in the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt had not been circumcised.6For the people of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the nation, the men of war who came out of Egypt, perished, because they did not obey the voice of the Lord; the Lord swore to them that he would not let them see the land that the Lord had sworn to their fathers to give to us, a land flowing with milk and honey. (2Mo 3,8; 4Mo 14,23; 4Mo 14,33; 5Mo 1,3; 5Mo 2,7; 5Mo 2,14; 5Mo 8,4; Ps 95,10; Ps 95,11; Hebr 3,11)7So it was their children, whom he raised up in their place, that Joshua circumcised. For they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way. (4Mo 14,31; 5Mo 1,39)8When the circumcising of the whole nation was finished, they remained in their places in the camp until they were healed.9And the Lord said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” And so the name of that place is called Gilgal[2] to this day. (1Mo 34,14; Jos 4,19)
First Passover in Canaan
10While the people of Israel were encamped at Gilgal, they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening on the plains of Jericho. (2Mo 12,6; 4Mo 9,5)11And the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain.12And the manna ceased the day after they ate of the produce of the land. And there was no longer manna for the people of Israel, but they ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year. (2Mo 16,35)
The Commander of the Lord’s Army
13When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?” (1Mo 18,2; 1Mo 32,24; 2Mo 23,20; 2Mo 23,23; 4Mo 22,23; 4Mo 22,31; Apg 1,10)14And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped[3] and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?” (1Mo 17,3)15And the commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.
