Israel verhilft Benjamin zu Frauen

1 Die Männer Israels aber hatten in Mizpa geschworen und gesagt: Keiner von uns soll seine Tochter den Benjaminitern zur Frau geben. (Ri 20,1) 2 Und das Volk kam nach Bethel, und sie saßen da bis zum Abend vor Gott und erhoben ihre Stimme und weinten sehr (Ri 20,18; Ri 20,23; Ri 20,26) 3 und sprachen: O HERR, Gott Israels, warum ist das geschehen in Israel, dass heute Israel um einen Stamm weniger geworden ist? 4 Am andern Morgen machte sich das Volk früh auf und baute dort einen Altar und opferte Brandopfer und Dankopfer. 5 Und die Israeliten sprachen: Wer von allen Stämmen Israels ist nicht mit der Gemeinde heraufgekommen zum HERRN? Denn es war ein großer Schwur getan worden, dass, wer nicht hinaufkäme zum HERRN nach Mizpa, der sollte des Todes sterben. 6 Und es tat den Israeliten leid um ihren Bruder Benjamin, und sie sprachen: Heute ist ein Stamm von Israel abgeschlagen. 7 Wie können wir ihnen helfen, dass die Übriggebliebenen zu Frauen kommen? Denn wir haben geschworen bei dem HERRN, dass wir ihnen von unsern Töchtern keine zu Frauen geben. 8 Und sie sprachen: Welcher von den Stämmen Israels ist nicht heraufgekommen zum HERRN nach Mizpa? Und siehe, da war ins Lager der Gemeinde niemand gekommen von Jabesch in Gilead. 9 Man zählte das Volk, und siehe, da war kein Bürger da von Jabesch in Gilead. 10 Da sandte die Gemeinde zwölftausend streitbare Männer dorthin und gebot ihnen: Geht hin und schlagt mit der Schärfe des Schwerts die Bürger von Jabesch in Gilead mit Weib und Kind. 11 Doch so sollt ihr tun: An allem, was männlich ist, und an allen Frauen, die einem Mann angehört haben, sollt ihr den Bann vollstrecken! (4Mo 31,17) 12 Und sie fanden bei den Bürgern von Jabesch in Gilead vierhundert Mädchen, die Jungfrauen waren und keinem Mann angehört hatten. Die brachten sie ins Lager nach Silo, das da liegt im Lande Kanaan. 13 Da sandte die ganze Gemeinde hin und verhandelte mit den Benjaminitern, die auf dem Fels Rimmon waren, und sagten ihnen Frieden zu. (Ri 20,47) 14 So kamen die Benjaminiter zurück zu jener Zeit. Und sie gaben ihnen die Frauen, die sie am Leben gelassen hatten von den Frauen aus Jabesch in Gilead; aber diese waren noch nicht genug für sie. 15 Da tat es dem Volk leid um Benjamin, dass der HERR einen Riss gemacht hatte zwischen den Stämmen Israels. 16 Und die Ältesten der Gemeinde sprachen: Was wollen wir tun, dass die Übriggebliebenen zu Frauen kommen? Denn die Frauen in Benjamin sind ausgerottet. 17 Und sie sprachen: Die Entronnenen von Benjamin müssen doch ihr Erbe behalten, damit nicht ein Stamm ausgetilgt werde von Israel. 18 Wir aber können ihnen unsere Töchter nicht zu Frauen geben; denn die Israeliten haben geschworen und gesagt: Verflucht sei, wer Benjamin eine Frau gibt! 19 Und sie sprachen: Siehe, jedes Jahr findet ein Fest des HERRN statt zu Silo, das nördlich von Bethel liegt, östlich von der Straße, die hinaufführt von Bethel nach Sichem, und südlich von Lebona. (Jos 18,1) 20 Und sie geboten den Benjaminitern: Geht hin und legt euch auf die Lauer in den Weinbergen. 21 Wenn ihr dann seht, dass die Töchter Silos zum Reigentanz herausgehen, so brecht hervor aus den Weinbergen und holt euch jeder eine Frau von den Töchtern Silos und geht heim ins Land Benjamin. (2Mo 21,16; 5Mo 24,7) 22 Wenn aber ihre Väter oder ihre Brüder kommen, um mit uns zu rechten, wollen wir zu ihnen sagen: Gönnt sie uns, denn wir haben nicht für jeden eine Frau gewonnen im Kampf; auch habt nicht ihr sie ihnen gegeben, sonst wäret ihr jetzt schuldig. 23 Die Benjaminiter taten das und nahmen sich Frauen nach ihrer Zahl von den Mädchen, die im Reigen tanzten und die sie geraubt hatten, und zogen heim in ihr Erbteil, bauten die Städte wieder auf und wohnten darin. 24 Auch die Israeliten gingen zu jener Zeit von dort auseinander, jeder zu seinem Stamm und zu seinem Geschlecht, und zogen von dort weg, jeder zu seinem Erbteil. 25 Zu der Zeit war kein König in Israel; jeder tat, was ihn recht dünkte. (Ri 17,6)

Wives for the Benjaminites

1 The men of Israel had taken an oath at Mizpah: ‘Not one of us will give his daughter in marriage to a Benjaminite.’ 2 The people went to Bethel,^[1] where they sat before God until evening, raising their voices and weeping bitterly. 3 ‘Lord, God of Israel,’ they cried, ‘why has this happened to Israel? Why should one tribe be missing from Israel today?’ 4 Early the next day the people built an altar and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. 5 Then the Israelites asked, ‘Who from all the tribes of Israel has failed to assemble before the Lord?’ For they had taken a solemn oath that anyone who failed to assemble before the Lord at Mizpah was to be put to death. 6 Now the Israelites grieved for the tribe of Benjamin, their fellow Israelites. ‘Today one tribe is cut off from Israel,’ they said. 7 ‘How can we provide wives for those who are left, since we have taken an oath by the Lord not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?’ 8 Then they asked, ‘Which one of the tribes of Israel failed to assemble before the Lord at Mizpah?’ They discovered that no-one from Jabesh Gilead had come to the camp for the assembly. 9 For when they counted the people, they found that none of the people of Jabesh Gilead were there. 10 So the assembly sent twelve thousand fighting men with instructions to go to Jabesh Gilead and put to the sword those living there, including the women and children. 11 ‘This is what you are to do,’ they said. ‘Kill every male and every woman who is not a virgin.’ 12 They found among the people living in Jabesh Gilead four hundred young women who had never slept with a man, and they took them to the camp at Shiloh in Canaan. 13 Then the whole assembly sent an offer of peace to the Benjaminites at the rock of Rimmon. 14 So the Benjaminites returned at that time and were given the women of Jabesh Gilead who had been spared. But there were not enough for all of them. 15 The people grieved for Benjamin, because the Lord had made a gap in the tribes of Israel. 16 And the elders of the assembly said, ‘With the women of Benjamin destroyed, how shall we provide wives for the men who are left? 17 The Benjaminite survivors must have heirs,’ they said, ‘so that a tribe of Israel will not be wiped out. 18 We can’t give them our daughters as wives, since we Israelites have taken this oath: “Cursed be anyone who gives a wife to a Benjaminite.” 19 But look, there is the annual festival of the Lord in Shiloh, which lies north of Bethel, east of the road that goes from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.’ 20 So they instructed the Benjaminites, saying, ‘Go and hide in the vineyards 21 and watch. When the young women of Shiloh come out to join in the dancing, rush from the vineyards and each of you seize one of them to be your wife. Then return to the land of Benjamin. 22 When their fathers or brothers complain to us, we will say to them, “Do us the favour of helping them, because we did not get wives for them during the war. You will not be guilty of breaking your oath because you did not give your daughters to them.” ’ 23 So that is what the Benjaminites did. While the young women were dancing, each man caught one and carried her off to be his wife. Then they returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the towns and settled in them. 24 At that time the Israelites left that place and went home to their tribes and clans, each to his own inheritance. 25 In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.
