1Und nun, ihr Priester, dieses Gebot gilt euch:2Wenn ihr’s nicht hören noch zu Herzen nehmen werdet, dass ihr meinem Namen die Ehre gebt, spricht der HERR Zebaoth, so werde ich den Fluch unter euch schicken und euren Segen verfluchen; ja, ich habe ihn verflucht, weil ihr’s nicht wollt zu Herzen nehmen. (4Mo 6,23; 5Mo 28,15)3Siehe, ich will euch den Arm zerbrechen und euch Kot ins Angesicht werfen, den Kot eurer Feste, und man wird euch zu ihm hinaustragen.4So werdet ihr dann erfahren, dass ich solches Gebot zu euch gesandt habe, damit mein Bund mit Levi bestehen bleibe, spricht der HERR Zebaoth.5Denn mein Bund mit ihm war Leben und Friede; die gab ich ihm, dazu Furcht, dass er mich fürchtete und meinen Namen scheute.6Verlässliche Weisung war in seinem Munde, und es wurde nichts Böses auf seinen Lippen gefunden. Er wandelte mit mir friedsam und aufrichtig und hielt viele von Sünden zurück. (1Mo 5,24)7Denn des Priesters Lippen sollen die Lehre bewahren, dass man aus seinem Munde Weisung suche; denn er ist ein Bote des HERRN Zebaoth. (5Mo 33,10)8Ihr aber seid von dem Wege abgewichen und habt viele zu Fall gebracht durch falsche Weisung und habt den Bund mit Levi verdorben, spricht der HERR Zebaoth.9Darum habe auch ich euch verächtlich und unwert gemacht vor dem ganzen Volk, weil ihr meine Wege nicht haltet und die Person anseht, wenn ihr Weisung gebt.
Gegen Ehen mit heidnischen Frauen und gegen Ehescheidung
10Haben wir nicht alle einen Vater? Hat uns nicht ein Gott geschaffen? Warum verachten wir denn einer den andern und entheiligen den Bund mit unsern Vätern? (Hi 31,15; Mal 1,6; Eph 4,6)11Juda ist treulos geworden, und in Israel und in Jerusalem geschehen Gräuel. Denn Juda entheiligte das Heiligtum des HERRN, das er lieb hat, und freite eines fremden Gottes Tochter. (Esr 9,2)12Aber der HERR wird den, der solches tut, ausrotten aus den Zelten Jakobs mit seinem ganzen Geschlecht, auch wenn er noch dem HERRN Zebaoth Opfer bringt.13Weiter tut ihr auch das: Ihr bedeckt den Altar des HERRN mit Tränen und Weinen und Seufzen, weil er das Opfer nicht mehr ansehen noch es mit Wohlgefallen von euren Händen empfangen mag. (Mal 1,10)14Ihr aber sprecht: »Warum das?« Weil der HERR Zeuge war zwischen dir und der Frau deiner Jugend, der du untreu geworden bist, obwohl sie doch deine Gefährtin und die Frau ist, mit der du einen Bund geschlossen hast.15Einer, in dem noch ein Rest von Geist war, hat das nicht getan. Was sucht dieser eine? Nachkommenschaft von Gott. Darum so seht euch vor in eurem Geist, und werde keiner treulos der Frau seiner Jugend.16Wer ihr aber gram ist und sie verstößt, spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels, der bedeckt mit Frevel sein Kleid, spricht der HERR Zebaoth. Darum so seht euch vor in eurem Geist und brecht nicht die Treue! (5Mo 24,1)
Gegen das Unrecht
17Ihr macht den HERRN unwillig durch euer Reden! Ihr aber sprecht: »Womit machen wir ihn unwillig?« Damit, dass ihr sprecht: »Wer Böses tut, der gefällt dem HERRN, und an solchen hat er Freude«, oder: »Wo ist der Gott, der da straft?« (Mal 3,13)
1‘And now, you priests, this warning is for you.2If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honour my name,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honour me.3‘Because of you I will rebuke your descendants[1]; I will smear on your faces the dung from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it.4And you will know that I have sent you this warning so that my covenant with Levi may continue,’ says the Lord Almighty.5‘My covenant was with him, a covenant of life and peace, and I gave them to him; this called for reverence and he revered me and stood in awe of my name.6True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin.7‘For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth.8But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,’ says the Lord Almighty.9‘So I have caused you to be despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality in matters of the law.’
Breaking covenant through divorce
10Do we not all have one Father[2]? Did not one God create us? Why do we profane the covenant of our ancestors by being unfaithful to one another?11Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the Lord loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god.12As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the Lord remove him from the tents of Jacob[3] – even though he brings an offering to the Lord Almighty.13Another thing you do: you flood the Lord’s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer looks with favour on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands.14You ask, ‘Why?’ It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.15Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring.[4] So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth.16‘The man who hates and divorces his wife,’ says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘does violence to the one he should protect,’[5] says the Lord Almighty. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.
Breaking covenant through injustice
17You have wearied the Lord with your words. ‘How have we wearied him?’ you ask. By saying, ‘All who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord, and he is pleased with them’ or ‘Where is the God of justice?’
