Jeremia beim Statthalter Gedalja

1 Dies ist das Wort, das vom HERRN geschah zu Jeremia, als ihn Nebusaradan, der Oberste der Leibwache, losließ in Rama, wo er ihn gefunden hatte; denn er war auch, mit Fesseln gebunden, unter allen Gefangenen aus Jerusalem und Juda, die nach Babel weggeführt werden sollten. (Jer 39,11) 2 Als nun der Oberste der Leibwache Jeremia hatte zu sich holen lassen, sprach er zu ihm: Der HERR, dein Gott, hat dies Unglück über diese Stätte vorhergesagt 3 und hat’s auch kommen lassen und getan, wie er geredet hat; denn ihr habt gesündigt wider den HERRN und seiner Stimme nicht gehorcht; darum ist euch solches widerfahren. 4 Und nun siehe, ich mache dich heute los von den Fesseln, mit denen deine Hände gebunden waren. Gefällt dir’s, mit mir nach Babel zu ziehen, so komm, du sollst mir befohlen sein. Gefällt dir’s aber nicht, mit mir nach Babel zu ziehen, so lass es sein. Siehe, du hast das ganze Land vor dir; wo dich’s gut dünkt und dir’s gefällt, da zieh hin. (Jer 39,12) 5 Gefällt dir’s, hierzubleiben, dann magst du umkehren zu Gedalja, dem Sohne Ahikams, des Sohnes Schafans, den der König von Babel über die Städte in Juda gesetzt hat, und bei ihm bleiben unter dem Volk; oder geh, wohin dir’s gefällt. Und der Oberste der Leibwache gab ihm Wegzehrung und ein Geschenk und ließ ihn gehen. (Jer 39,14) 6 So kam Jeremia zu Gedalja, dem Sohne Ahikams, nach Mizpa und blieb bei ihm unter dem Volk, das im Lande noch übrig geblieben war.

7 Als nun die Hauptleute, die samt ihren Leuten noch im Lande verstreut waren, erfuhren, dass der König von Babel Gedalja, den Sohn Ahikams, über das Land gesetzt hatte und über die Männer, Frauen und Kinder und über die Geringen im Lande, die nicht nach Babel weggeführt waren, (2Kön 25,22) 8 kamen sie zu Gedalja nach Mizpa, nämlich Jischmael, der Sohn Netanjas, Johanan und Jonatan, die Söhne Kareachs, und Seraja, der Sohn Tanhumets, und die Söhne Efais von Netofa und Jaasanja, der Sohn eines Maachatiters, samt ihren Leuten. (Jer 41,1; Jer 41,11) 9 Und Gedalja, der Sohn Ahikams, des Sohnes Schafans, schwor ihnen und ihren Leuten einen Eid und sprach: Fürchtet euch nicht, den Chaldäern untertan zu sein; bleibt im Lande und seid dem König von Babel untertan, so wird’s euch wohlgehen. 10 Siehe, ich bleibe hier in Mizpa und habe die Verantwortung vor den Chaldäern, die zu uns kommen; ihr aber sollt Wein und Feigen und Öl ernten und in eure Gefäße tun und sollt in euren Städten wohnen, die ihr wieder in Besitz genommen habt. 11 Auch alle Judäer, die in Moab und bei den Ammonitern und in Edom und in allen Ländern waren, hörten, dass der König von Babel einen Rest in Juda übrig gelassen und über sie Gedalja gesetzt hatte, den Sohn Ahikams, des Sohnes Schafans. 12 Da kamen sie alle zurück aus allen Orten, wohin sie verstreut waren, in das Land Juda zu Gedalja nach Mizpa und ernteten sehr viel Wein und Sommerfrüchte. 13 Aber Johanan, der Sohn Kareachs, und alle Hauptleute, die im Lande verstreut gewesen waren, kamen zu Gedalja nach Mizpa 14 und sprachen zu ihm: Weißt du auch, dass Baalis, der König der Ammoniter, Jischmael, den Sohn Netanjas, gesandt hat, dass er dich erschlagen soll? Das wollte ihnen aber Gedalja, der Sohn Ahikams, nicht glauben. 15 Da sprach Johanan, der Sohn Kareachs, zu Gedalja heimlich in Mizpa: Ich will hingehen und Jischmael, den Sohn Netanjas, erschlagen, ohne dass es jemand erfahren soll. Warum soll er dich erschlagen, sodass alle Judäer, die bei dir versammelt sind, zerstreut werden und, die noch aus Juda übrig geblieben sind, umkommen? 16 Aber Gedalja, der Sohn Ahikams, sprach zu Johanan, dem Sohn Kareachs: Du sollst das nicht tun; es ist nicht wahr, was du von Jischmael sagst.

Jeremiah freed

1 The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard had released him at Ramah. He had found Jeremiah bound in chains among all the captives from Jerusalem and Judah who were being carried into exile to Babylon. 2 When the commander of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, ‘The Lord your God decreed this disaster for this place. 3 And now the Lord has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would. All this happened because you people sinned against the Lord and did not obey him. 4 But today I am freeing you from the chains on your wrists. Come with me to Babylon, if you like, and I will look after you; but if you do not want to, then don’t come. Look, the whole country lies before you; go wherever you please.’ 5 However, before Jeremiah turned to go,^[1] Nebuzaradan added, ‘Go back to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the towns of Judah, and live with him among the people, or go anywhere else you please.’ Then the commander gave him provisions and a present and let him go. 6 So Jeremiah went to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah and stayed with him among the people who were left behind in the land.

Gedaliah assassinated

7 When all the army officers and their men who were still in the open country heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam as governor over the land and had put him in charge of the men, women and children who were the poorest in the land and who had not been carried into exile to Babylon, 8 they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah – Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah^[2] the son of the Maakathite, and their men. 9 Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, took an oath to reassure them and their men. ‘Do not be afraid to serve the Babylonians,^[3]’ he said. ‘Settle down in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well with you. 10 I myself will stay in Mizpah to represent you before the Babylonians who come to us, but you are to harvest the wine, summer fruit and olive oil, and put them in your storage jars, and live in the towns you have taken over.’ 11 When all the Jews in Moab, Ammon, Edom and all the other countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, as governor over them, 12 they all came back to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, from all the countries where they had been scattered. And they harvested an abundance of wine and summer fruit. 13 Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers still in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah 14 and said to him, ‘Don’t you know that Baalis king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to take your life?’ But Gedaliah son of Ahikam did not believe them. 15 Then Johanan son of Kareah said privately to Gedaliah in Mizpah, ‘Let me go and kill Ishmael son of Nethaniah, and no-one will know it. Why should he take your life and cause all the Jews who are gathered around you to be scattered and the remnant of Judah to perish?’ 16 But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, ‘Don’t do such a thing! What you are saying about Ishmael is not true.’
