Die Richter Tola und Jaïr

1 Nach Abimelech stand auf, Israel zu erretten, Tola, ein Mann aus Issachar, der Sohn Puas, des Sohnes Dodos. Er wohnte in Schamir auf dem Gebirge Ephraim (1Mo 46,13; 4Mo 26,23) 2 und richtete Israel dreiundzwanzig Jahre und starb und wurde begraben in Schamir. 3 Nach ihm stand auf Jaïr aus Gilead und richtete Israel zweiundzwanzig Jahre. (4Mo 32,41) 4 Der hatte dreißig Söhne, die auf dreißig Eseln ritten. Und sie hatten dreißig Städte, die heißen »Dörfer Jaïrs« bis auf diesen Tag und liegen in Gilead. (5Mo 3,14; Ri 12,9; Ri 12,14) 5 Und Jaïr starb und wurde begraben in Kamon.

Israels Untreue

6 Aber die Israeliten taten wiederum, was dem HERRN missfiel, und dienten den Baalen und den Astarten und den Göttern von Aram und den Göttern von Sidon und den Göttern von Moab und den Göttern der Ammoniter und den Göttern der Philister und verließen den HERRN und dienten ihm nicht. 7 Da entbrannte der Zorn des HERRN über Israel, und er verkaufte sie in die Hand der Philister und Ammoniter. 8 Und sie zertraten und zerschlugen die Israeliten zu jener Zeit achtzehn Jahre lang, nämlich alle Israeliten jenseits des Jordans im Land der Amoriter, das in Gilead liegt. 9 Dazu zogen die Ammoniter über den Jordan und kämpften gegen Juda, Benjamin und das Haus Ephraim, sodass Israel hart bedrängt wurde. 10 Da schrien die Israeliten zu dem HERRN und sprachen: Wir haben an dir gesündigt, denn wir haben unsern Gott verlassen und den Baalen gedient. (1Sam 12,10) 11 Aber der HERR sprach zu den Israeliten: Haben euch nicht auch unterdrückt die Ägypter, die Amoriter, die Ammoniter, die Philister, 12 die Sidonier, Amalek und Maon? Und ich half euch aus ihren Händen, als ihr zu mir schriet. 13 Dennoch habt ihr mich verlassen und andern Göttern gedient. Darum will ich euch nicht mehr erretten. 14 Geht hin und schreit zu den Göttern, die ihr erwählt habt; lasst diese euch helfen zur Zeit eurer Bedrängnis! (5Mo 32,37; Jer 2,28) 15 Aber die Israeliten sprachen zum HERRN: Wir haben gesündigt, mache du es mit uns, wie dir’s gefällt; nur errette uns heute! 16 Und sie taten von sich die fremden Götter und dienten dem HERRN. Da jammerte es ihn, dass Israel so geplagt wurde. (Jos 24,23; Ri 2,18)

Der Richter Jeftah

17 Und die Ammoniter wurden aufgeboten und lagerten sich in Gilead; aber die Israeliten versammelten sich und lagerten sich in Mizpa. (Ri 11,29) 18 Und das Volk und die Oberen von Gilead sprachen untereinander: Wer ist der Mann, der anfängt, mit den Ammonitern zu kämpfen? Der soll das Haupt sein über alle, die in Gilead wohnen. (Ri 11,6)

Tola

1 Tola rose up to save Israel. That happened after the time of Abimelek. Tola was from the tribe of Issachar. He was the son of Puah, who was the son of Dodo. Tola lived in Shamir. It’s in the hill country of Ephraim. 2 Tola led Israel for 23 years. After he died, he was buried in Shamir.

Jair

3 Jair became the leader after Tola. Jair was from the land of Gilead. He led Israel for 22 years. 4 He had 30 sons. They rode on 30 donkeys. His sons controlled 30 towns in Gilead. Those towns are called Havvoth Jair to this day. 5 After Jair died, he was buried in Kamon.

Jephthah

6 Once again the Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the LORD. They served gods that were named Baal. They served female gods that were named Ashtoreth. They worshipped the gods of Aram and Sidon. They served the gods of Moab and Ammon. They also worshipped the gods of the Philistines. The Israelites deserted the LORD. They didn’t serve him anymore. 7 So the LORD became very angry with them. He handed them over to the Philistines and the Ammonites. 8 That year they broke Israel’s power completely. They treated the Israelites badly for 18 years. The people who did this lived east of the River Jordan. They lived in Gilead. That was the land of the Amorites. 9 The Ammonites also went across the Jordan. They crossed over to fight against the tribes of Judah, Benjamin and Ephraim. Israel was suffering terribly. 10 Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD. They said, ‘We have sinned against you. We have deserted our God. We have served gods that are named Baal.’ 11 The LORD replied, ‘The Egyptians and Amorites treated you badly. So did the Ammonites and Philistines. 12 And so did the Amalekites and the people of Sidon and Maon. Each time you cried out to me for help. And I saved you from their power. 13 But you have deserted me. You have served other gods. So I will not save you anymore. 14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you get into trouble!’ 15 But the Israelites replied to the LORD, ‘We have sinned. Do to us what you think is best. But please save us now.’ 16 Then they got rid of the false gods that were among them. They served the LORD. And he couldn’t stand to see Israel suffer anymore. 17 The Ammonites were called together to fight. They camped in the land of Gilead. Then the Israelites gathered together. They camped at the city of Mizpah. 18 The leaders of Gilead spoke to one another. They said, ‘Who will lead the attack against the Ammonites? That person will be the ruler of all the people who live in Gilead.’
