Israels Kämpfe nach dem Tod Josuas

1 Nach dem Tod Josuas befragten die Israeliten den HERRN und sprachen: Wer soll unter uns zuerst hinaufziehen, Krieg zu führen gegen die Kanaaniter? (1Mo 49,8; 2Mo 28,30; 4Mo 27,21; Ri 2,8; Ri 18,5; Ri 20,18)

2 Der HERR sprach: Juda soll hinaufziehen. Siehe, ich habe das Land in seine Hand gegeben. 3 Da sprach Juda zu seinem Bruder Simeon: Zieh mit mir hinauf in mein Erbteil und lass uns mit den Kanaanitern kämpfen, dann will auch ich mit dir ziehen in dein Erbteil. So zog Simeon mit ihm. 4 Als nun Juda hinaufzog, gab der HERR die Kanaaniter und Perisiter in ihre Hände, und sie schlugen bei Besek zehntausend Mann 5 und fanden den Adoni-Besek zu Besek und kämpften mit ihm und schlugen die Kanaaniter und Perisiter. 6 Aber Adoni-Besek floh, und sie jagten ihm nach. Und als sie ihn ergriffen, hieben sie ihm die Daumen und die großen Zehen ab. 7 Da sprach Adoni-Besek: Siebzig Könige, deren Daumen und große Zehen abgehauen waren, lasen Reste auf unter meinem Tisch. Wie ich getan habe, so hat mir Gott vergolten. Und man brachte ihn nach Jerusalem; dort starb er. 8 Aber die Judäer kämpften gegen Jerusalem und eroberten es und schlugen es mit der Schärfe des Schwerts und zündeten die Stadt an. (Ri 21,1) 9 Danach zogen die Judäer hinab, um gegen die Kanaaniter zu kämpfen, die auf dem Gebirge und im Südland und im Hügelland wohnten. (Jos 10,40; Jos 11,16) 10 Und Juda zog gegen die Kanaaniter, die in Hebron wohnten – Hebron aber hieß vorzeiten Kirjat-Arba –, und sie schlugen den Scheschai und Ahiman und Talmai (Jos 15,13) 11 und zogen von dort gegen die Einwohner von Debir. Debir aber hieß vorzeiten Kirjat-Sefer. 12 Und Kaleb sprach: Wer Kirjat-Sefer schlägt und erobert, dem will ich meine Tochter Achsa zur Frau geben. (Jos 15,16) 13 Da eroberte es Otniël, der Sohn des Kenas, des jüngeren Bruders von Kaleb. Und Kaleb gab ihm seine Tochter Achsa zur Frau. 14 Und es begab sich, als sie zu ihm kam, beredete sie ihn, ein Stück Land zu fordern von ihrem Vater. Und sie stieg vom Esel. Da sprach Kaleb zu ihr: Was willst du? 15 Sie sprach: Gib mir eine Segensgabe! Denn du hast mich nach dem dürren Südland gegeben; gib mir auch Wasserquellen! Da gab er ihr die oberen und unteren Quellen. 16 Und die Nachkommen des Keniters Hobab, des Schwiegervaters des Mose, zogen herauf aus der Palmenstadt mit den Männern von Juda in die Wüste Juda, die im Süden von Arad liegt, und gingen hin und wohnten unter dem Volk. 17 Und Juda zog hin mit seinem Bruder Simeon, und sie schlugen die Kanaaniter, die in Zefat wohnten, und vollstreckten den Bann an der Stadt und nannten sie Horma. (5Mo 20,12) 18 Dazu eroberte Juda Gaza mit seinem Gebiet und Aschkelon mit seinem Gebiet und Ekron mit seinem Gebiet. 19 Und der HERR war mit Juda, dass es das Gebirge einnahm; es konnte aber die Bewohner der Ebene nicht vertreiben, weil sie eiserne Wagen hatten. (Jos 17,16; Ri 4,3) 20 Und sie gaben dem Kaleb Hebron, wie Mose gesagt hatte, und er vertrieb daraus die drei Söhne des Anak. (Jos 14,6) 21 Aber die Benjaminiter vertrieben die Jebusiter nicht, die in Jerusalem wohnten, sondern die Jebusiter wohnten bei den Benjaminitern in Jerusalem bis auf diesen Tag. (Jos 15,63; Jos 18,28; Ri 8,1; Ri 19,11)

22 Auch das Haus Josef zog hinauf nach Bethel, und der HERR war mit ihnen. 23 Und das Haus Josef ließ Bethel auskundschaften; die Stadt hieß vorzeiten Lus. (1Mo 28,19; Jos 12,16) 24 Und die Späher sahen einen Mann aus der Stadt gehen und sprachen zu ihm: Zeige uns, wo wir in die Stadt kommen, so wollen wir Barmherzigkeit an dir tun. (Jos 2,14) 25 Und als er ihnen zeigte, wo sie in die Stadt kämen, schlugen sie die Stadt mit der Schärfe des Schwerts; aber den Mann und sein ganzes Geschlecht ließen sie gehen. (Jos 6,25) 26 Da zog der Mann ins Land der Hetiter und baute eine Stadt und nannte sie Lus; die heißt noch heutigentags so. 27 Und Manasse vertrieb nicht Bet-Schean und seine Ortschaften noch Taanach und seine Ortschaften noch die Einwohner von Dor und seinen Ortschaften noch die Einwohner von Jibleam und seinen Ortschaften noch die Einwohner von Megiddo und seinen Ortschaften. So blieben die Kanaaniter dort im Lande wohnen. (Jos 17,11) 28 Als aber Israel mächtig wurde, machte es die Kanaaniter fronpflichtig, vertrieb sie jedoch nicht. 29 Auch Ephraim vertrieb die Kanaaniter nicht, die in Geser wohnten, sondern die Kanaaniter wohnten mitten unter ihnen in Geser. (Jos 16,10) 30 Auch Sebulon vertrieb nicht die Einwohner von Kitron und Nahalol, sondern die Kanaaniter wohnten mitten unter ihnen und waren fronpflichtig. (Jos 19,15) 31 Asser vertrieb nicht die Einwohner von Akko noch die Einwohner von Sidon, Mahaleb, Achsib, Helba, Afek und Rehob; 32 sondern die Asseriter wohnten mitten unter den Kanaanitern, die im Land wohnten, denn sie vertrieben sie nicht. 33 Naftali vertrieb die Einwohner nicht von Bet-Schemesch noch von Bet-Anat, sondern wohnte mitten unter den Kanaanitern, die im Lande wohnten. Aber die Einwohner von Bet-Schemesch und Bet-Anat wurden fronpflichtig. (Jos 19,38) 34 Und die Amoriter drängten die Daniter aufs Gebirge und ließen nicht zu, dass sie herunter in die Ebene kämen. (Jos 19,47; Ri 13,2; Ri 13,25; Ri 18,1)

35 Und die Amoriter blieben wohnen auf dem Gebirge Heres, in Ajalon und in Schaalbim. Doch wurde ihnen die Hand des Hauses Josef zu schwer, und sie wurden fronpflichtig. (Jos 19,42) 36 Und das Gebiet der Amoriter ging vom Skorpionensteig, von der Felsenstadt und weiter hinauf.

The Israelites fight against the remaining Canaanites

1 Joshua died. After that, the Israelites spoke to the LORD. They asked him, ‘Who of us will go up first and fight against the Canaanites?’ 2 The LORD answered, ‘The tribe of Judah will go up. I have handed the land over to them.’ 3 Then the men of Judah spoke to their fellow Israelites, the men of Simeon. They said, ‘Come up with us. Come into the territory Joshua gave us. Help us fight against the Canaanites. Then we’ll go with you into your territory.’ So the men of Simeon went with them. 4 When the men of Judah attacked, the LORD helped them. He handed the Canaanites and Perizzites over to them. They struck down 10,000 men at Bezek. 5 The men of Judah found Adoni-Bezek there. They fought against him. They struck down the Canaanites and Perizzites. 6 But Adoni-Bezek ran away. The men of Judah chased him and caught him. Then they cut off his thumbs and big toes. 7 Adoni-Bezek said, ‘I cut off the thumbs and big toes of 70 kings. I made them pick up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them.’ The men of Judah brought Adoni-Bezek to Jerusalem. That’s where he died. 8 The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem and captured it. They set the city on fire. They killed its people with their swords. 9 After that, the men of Judah went down to fight against some Canaanites. Those Canaanites were living in the central hill country. They also fought against those living in the Negev Desert and the western hills. 10 Then the men of Judah marched out against the Canaanites living in Hebron. Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba. The men of Judah won the battle over Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai. 11 From Hebron they marched out against the people living in Debir. It used to be called Kiriath Sepher. 12 Caleb said, ‘I will give my daughter Aksah to be married. I’ll give her to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.’ 13 Othniel captured it. So Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him to be his wife. Othniel was the son of Kenaz. He was Caleb’s younger brother. 14 One day Aksah came to Othniel. She begged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, ‘What can I do for you?’ 15 She replied, ‘Do me a special favour. You have given me some land in the Negev Desert. Give me springs of water also.’ So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs. 16 Moses’ father-in-law was a Kenite. His family went up from Jericho. Jericho was also known as the City of Palm Trees. His family went up with the people of Judah to the Desert of Judah. They went there to live among its people. Those people were living in the Negev Desert near Arad. 17 The men of Judah marched out with their fellow Israelites, the men of Simeon. They attacked the people of Canaan living in Zephath. They set the city apart to the LORD in a special way to be destroyed. That’s why the city was called Hormah. 18 The men of Judah captured Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron. They also captured the territory around each of those cities. 19 The LORD was with the men of Judah. They took over the central hill country. But they weren’t able to drive the people out of the plains. That’s because those people used chariots that had some iron parts. 20 Moses had promised to give Hebron to Caleb. So Hebron was given to Caleb. He drove the three sons of Anak out of it. 21 But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. So to this day they live there with the people of Benjamin. 22 The tribes of Joseph attacked Bethel. The LORD was with them. 23 They sent men to Bethel to check it out. It used to be called Luz. 24 Those who were sent saw a man coming out of the city. They said to him, ‘Show us how to get into the city. If you do, we’ll see that you are treated well.’ 25 So he showed them how to get in. The men of Joseph killed the people in the city with their swords. But they spared the man from Bethel. They also spared his whole family. 26 Then he went to the land of the Hittites. He built a city there. He called it Luz. That’s still its name to this day. 27 But the tribe of Manasseh didn’t drive out the people of Beth Shan. They didn’t drive out the people of Taanach, Dor, Ibleam and Megiddo. And they didn’t drive out the people of the settlements that are around those cities either. That’s because the Canaanites had made up their minds to continue living in that land. 28 Later, Israel became stronger. Then they forced the Canaanites to work hard for them. But Israel never drove them out completely. 29 The tribe of Ephraim didn’t drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer. So the Canaanites continued to live there among them. 30 The tribe of Zebulun didn’t drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron and Nahalol. So these Canaanites lived among them. But the people of Zebulun forced the Canaanites to work hard for them. 31 The tribe of Asher didn’t drive out the people living in Akko and Sidon. They didn’t drive out the people of Ahlab, Akzib, Helbah, Aphek and Rehob. 32 So the people of Asher lived among the Canaanites who were in the land. 33 The tribe of Naphtali didn’t drive out the people living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath. So the people of Naphtali lived among the Canaanites who were in the land. The people of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were forced to work hard for them. 34 The Amorites made the people of Dan stay in the central hill country. They didn’t let them come down into the plain. 35 The Amorites made up their minds to stay in Mount Heres. They also stayed in Aijalon and Shaalbim. But the power of the tribes of Joseph grew. Then the Amorites were forced to work hard for them. 36 The border of the Amorites started at Scorpion Pass. It went to Sela and even past it.
