1Unterdessen kamen viele Tausend Menschen zusammen, sodass sie einander fast niedertraten. Da fing er an und sagte zuerst zu seinen Jüngern: Hütet euch vor dem Sauerteig der Pharisäer, das ist die Heuchelei. (Mt 10,26; Mt 16,6; Mk 8,15)2Es ist aber nichts verborgen, was nicht offenbar wird, und nichts geheim, was man nicht wissen wird. (Mt 10,26; Mk 4,22; Lk 8,17)3Darum, was ihr in der Finsternis sagt, das wird man im Licht hören; und was ihr ins Ohr flüstert in den Kammern, das wird man auf den Dächern verkündigen.4Ich sage aber euch, meinen Freunden: Fürchtet euch nicht vor denen, die den Leib töten und danach nichts mehr tun können. (Joh 15,14)5Ich will euch aber zeigen, wen ihr fürchten sollt: Fürchtet den, der, nachdem er getötet hat, Macht hat, in die Hölle zu werfen. Ja, ich sage euch, den sollt ihr fürchten.6Verkauft man nicht fünf Sperlinge für zwei Groschen? Dennoch ist vor Gott nicht einer von ihnen vergessen.7Auch sind die Haare auf eurem Haupt alle gezählt. Fürchtet euch nicht! Ihr seid kostbarer als viele Sperlinge. (Lk 21,18; Lk 24,1)8Ich sage euch aber: Wer mich bekennt vor den Menschen, zu dem wird sich auch der Menschensohn bekennen vor den Engeln Gottes.9Wer mich aber verleugnet vor den Menschen, der wird verleugnet werden vor den Engeln Gottes. (1Sam 2,30; Lk 9,26)10Und wer ein Wort gegen den Menschensohn sagt, dem soll es vergeben werden; wer aber den Heiligen Geist lästert, dem soll es nicht vergeben werden. (Mt 12,32; Mk 3,28)11Wenn sie euch aber führen werden in die Synagogen und vor die Machthaber und die Obrigkeiten, so sorgt nicht, wie oder womit ihr euch verantworten oder was ihr sagen sollt; (Mt 10,17; Mk 13,11; Lk 21,12)12denn der Heilige Geist wird euch in derselben Stunde lehren, was ihr sagen sollt.
Warnung vor Habgier
13Es sprach aber einer aus dem Volk zu ihm: Meister, sage meinem Bruder, dass er mit mir das Erbe teile.14Er aber sprach zu ihm: Mensch, wer hat mich zum Richter oder Schlichter über euch gesetzt?15Und er sprach zu ihnen: Seht zu und hütet euch vor aller Habgier; denn niemand lebt davon, dass er viele Güter hat. (Pred 5,9; 1Tim 6,9; Jak 5,1)
Der reiche Kornbauer
16Und er sagte ihnen ein Gleichnis und sprach: Es war ein reicher Mensch, dessen Land hatte gut getragen.17Und er dachte bei sich selbst und sprach: Was soll ich tun? Ich habe nichts, wohin ich meine Früchte sammle.18Und sprach: Das will ich tun: Ich will meine Scheunen abbrechen und größere bauen und will darin sammeln all mein Korn und meine Güter19und will sagen zu meiner Seele: Liebe Seele, du hast einen großen Vorrat für viele Jahre; habe nun Ruhe, iss, trink und habe guten Mut! (Ps 39,7; Ps 49,17; Pred 2,24)20Aber Gott sprach zu ihm: Du Narr! Diese Nacht wird man deine Seele von dir fordern. Und wem wird dann gehören, was du bereitet hast? (Lk 9,25)21So geht es dem, der sich Schätze sammelt und ist nicht reich bei Gott.
Vom falschen und rechten Sorgen
22Er sprach aber zu seinen Jüngern: Darum sage ich euch: Sorgt euch nicht um das Leben, was ihr essen sollt, auch nicht um den Leib, was ihr anziehen sollt. (Mt 6,20; Mt 6,25)23Denn das Leben ist mehr als die Nahrung und der Leib mehr als die Kleidung.24Seht die Raben: Sie säen nicht, sie ernten nicht, sie haben keinen Keller und keine Scheune, und Gott ernährt sie doch. Wie viel mehr seid ihr als die Vögel! (Hi 38,41; Ps 147,9)25Wer ist unter euch, der, wie sehr er sich auch darum sorgt, seiner Länge[1] eine Elle zusetzen könnte?26Wenn ihr nun auch das Geringste nicht vermögt, warum sorgt ihr euch um das Übrige?27Seht die Lilien, wie sie wachsen: Sie arbeiten nicht, auch spinnen sie nicht. Ich sage euch aber, dass auch Salomo in aller seiner Herrlichkeit nicht gekleidet gewesen ist wie eine von ihnen. (1Kön 10,4)28Wenn nun Gott das Gras, das heute auf dem Feld steht und morgen in den Ofen geworfen wird, so kleidet, wie viel mehr wird er euch kleiden, ihr Kleingläubigen!29Darum auch ihr, fragt nicht danach, was ihr essen oder was ihr trinken sollt, und macht euch keine Unruhe.30Nach dem allen trachten die Heiden in der Welt; aber euer Vater weiß, dass ihr dessen bedürft.31Trachtet vielmehr nach seinem Reich, so wird euch dies zufallen.32Fürchte dich nicht, du kleine Herde! Denn es hat eurem Vater wohlgefallen, euch das Reich zu geben. (Lk 22,29)33Verkauft, was ihr habt, und gebt Almosen. Macht euch Geldbeutel, die nicht altern, einen Schatz, der niemals abnimmt, im Himmel, wo sich kein Dieb naht, und den keine Motten fressen. (Lk 18,22)34Denn wo euer Schatz ist, da wird auch euer Herz sein.
Vom Warten auf das Kommen des Herrn
35Lasst eure Lenden umgürtet sein und eure Lichter brennen (2Mo 12,11; Mt 24,42; Mt 25,1; 1Petr 1,13)36und seid gleich den Menschen, die auf ihren Herrn warten, wann er aufbrechen wird von der Hochzeit, auf dass, wenn er kommt und anklopft, sie ihm sogleich auftun. (Offb 3,20)37Selig sind die Knechte, die der Herr, wenn er kommt, wachend findet. Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Er wird sich schürzen und wird sie zu Tisch bitten und kommen und ihnen dienen.38Und wenn er kommt in der zweiten oder in der dritten Nachtwache und findet’s so: Selig sind sie.39Das sollt ihr aber wissen: Wenn der Hausherr wüsste, zu welcher Stunde der Dieb kommt, so ließe er nicht in sein Haus einbrechen. (1Thess 5,2; 2Petr 3,10; Offb 3,3; Offb 16,15)40Seid auch ihr bereit! Denn der Menschensohn kommt zu einer Stunde, da ihr’s nicht meint. (Mk 13,33; Mk 13,35)41Petrus aber sprach: Herr, sagst du dies Gleichnis zu uns oder auch zu allen?42Und der Herr sprach: Wer ist nun der treue und kluge Verwalter, den der Herr über sein Gesinde setzt, dass er ihnen zur rechten Zeit gebe, was ihnen an Getreide zusteht?43Selig ist der Knecht, den sein Herr, wenn er kommt, solches tun sieht.44Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Er wird ihn über alle seine Güter setzen.45Wenn aber jener Knecht in seinem Herzen sagt: Mein Herr lässt sich Zeit zu kommen, und fängt an, die Knechte und Mägde zu schlagen, auch zu essen und zu trinken und sich vollzusaufen,46dann wird der Herr dieses Knechts kommen an einem Tage, an dem er’s nicht erwartet, und zu einer Stunde, die er nicht kennt, und wird ihn in Stücke hauen lassen und wird ihm sein Teil geben bei den Ungläubigen.47Der Knecht aber, der den Willen seines Herrn kennt und hat nichts vorbereitet noch nach seinem Willen getan, der wird viel Schläge erleiden. (Jak 4,17)48Wer ihn aber nicht kennt und getan hat, was Schläge verdient, wird wenig Schläge erleiden. Wem viel gegeben ist, bei dem wird man viel suchen; und wem viel anvertraut ist, von dem wird man umso mehr fordern.
Entzweiungen um Jesu willen
49Ich bin gekommen, Feuer auf die Erde zu werfen; was wollte ich lieber, als dass es schon brennte! (Mt 10,34)50Aber ich muss mich taufen lassen mit einer Taufe, und wie ist mir so bange, bis sie vollendet ist! (Mk 10,38; Lk 18,31)51Meint ihr, dass ich gekommen bin, Frieden zu bringen auf Erden? Ich sage euch: Nein, sondern Zwietracht. (Lk 2,14; Lk 2,34)52Denn von nun an werden fünf in einem Hause uneins sein, drei gegen zwei und zwei gegen drei.53Es wird der Vater gegen den Sohn sein und der Sohn gegen den Vater, die Mutter gegen die Tochter und die Tochter gegen die Mutter, die Schwiegermutter gegen die Schwiegertochter und die Schwiegertochter gegen die Schwiegermutter. (Mi 7,6; Lk 21,16)
Die Zeichen der Zeit
54Er sprach aber zu der Menge: Wenn ihr eine Wolke aufsteigen seht im Westen, so sagt ihr gleich: Es gibt Regen. Und es geschieht so. (Mt 16,2)55Und wenn der Südwind weht, so sagt ihr: Es wird heiß werden. Und es geschieht so.56Ihr Heuchler! Das Aussehen der Erde und des Himmels könnt ihr prüfen; warum aber könnt ihr diese Zeit nicht prüfen?57Warum aber urteilt ihr nicht auch von euch aus darüber, was recht ist?58Denn wenn du mit deinem Widersacher vor den Fürsten gehst, so bemühe dich auf dem Wege, von ihm loszukommen, damit er nicht etwa dich vor den Richter ziehe, und der Richter überantworte dich dem Gerichtsdiener, und der Gerichtsdiener werfe dich ins Gefängnis. (Mt 5,25)59Ich sage dir: Du wirst von dort nicht herauskommen, bis du auch den letzten Heller bezahlt hast.
1During that time a crowd of many thousands had gathered. There were so many people that they were stepping on one another. Jesus spoke first to his disciples. ‘Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees,’ he said. ‘They just pretend to be godly.2Everything that is secret will be brought out into the open. Everything that is hidden will be uncovered.3What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight. What you have whispered to someone behind closed doors will be shouted from the rooftops.4‘My friends, listen to me. Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body but can’t do any more than that.5I will show you whom you should be afraid of. Be afraid of the one who has the authority to throw you into hell after you have been killed. Yes, I tell you, be afraid of him.6Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies? But God does not forget even one of them.7In fact, he even counts every hair on your head! So don’t be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.8‘What about someone who says in front of others that he knows me? I tell you, the Son of Man will say in front of God’s angels that he knows that person.9But what about someone who says in front of others that he doesn’t know me? I, the Son of Man, will say in front of God’s angels that I don’t know him.10Everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven. But anyone who speaks evil things against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.11‘You will be brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities. But do not worry about how to stand up for yourselves or what to say.12The Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.’
The story of the rich fool
13Someone in the crowd spoke to Jesus. ‘Teacher’, he said, ‘tell my brother to divide the family property with me.’14Jesus replied, ‘Friend, who made me a judge or umpire between you?’15Then he said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against wanting to have more and more things. Life is not made up of how much a person has.’16Then Jesus told them a story. He said, ‘A certain rich man’s land produced a very large crop.17He thought to himself, “What should I do? I don’t have any place to store my crops.”18‘Then he said, “This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones. I will store my extra corn in them.19I’ll say to myself, ‘You have plenty of corn stored away for many years. Take life easy. Eat, drink and have a good time.’ ”20‘But God said to him, “You foolish man! Tonight I will take your life away from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?”21‘That is how it will be for whoever stores things away for themselves but is not rich in the sight of God.’
Do not worry
22Then Jesus spoke to his disciples. He said, ‘I tell you, do not worry. Don’t worry about your life and what you will eat. And don’t worry about your body and what you will wear.23There is more to life than eating. There are more important things for the body than clothes.24Think about the ravens. They don’t plant or gather crops. They don’t have any barns at all. But God feeds them. You are worth much more than birds!25Can you add even one hour to your life by worrying?26You can’t do that very little thing. So why worry about the rest?27‘Think about how the wild flowers grow. They don’t work or make clothing. But here is what I tell you. Not even Solomon in his royal robes was dressed like one of those flowers.28If that is how God dresses the wild grass, how much better will he dress you! After all, the grass is here only today. Tomorrow it is thrown into the fire. Your faith is so small!29Don’t spend time thinking about what you will eat or drink. Don’t worry about it.30People who are ungodly run after all those things. Your Father knows that you need them.31But put God’s kingdom first. Then those other things will also be given to you.32‘Little flock, do not be afraid. Your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.33Sell what you own. Give to those who are poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out. Store up riches in heaven that will never be used up. There, no thief can come near it. There, no moth can destroy it.34Your heart will be where your riches are.
Be ready
35‘Be dressed and ready to serve. Keep your lamps burning.36Be like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding dinner. When he comes and knocks, they can open the door for him at once.37It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready when he comes. What I’m about to tell you is true. The master will then dress himself so he can serve them. He will let them take their places at the table. And he will come and wait on them.38It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready. It will even be good if he comes in the middle of the night or towards morning.39But here is what you must understand. Suppose the owner of the house knew at what hour the robber was coming. He would not have let his house be broken into.40You also must be ready. The Son of Man will come at an hour when you don’t expect him.’41Peter asked, ‘Lord, are you telling this story to us, or to everyone?’42The Lord answered, ‘Suppose a master puts one of his servants in charge of his other servants. The servant’s job is to give them the food they are to receive at the right time. The master wants a faithful and wise manager for this.43It will be good for the servant if the master finds him doing his job when the master returns.44What I’m about to tell you is true. The master will put that servant in charge of everything he owns.45But suppose the servant says to himself, “My master is taking a long time to come back.” Suppose that servant begins to beat the other servants, both men and women. Suppose he feeds himself. And suppose he drinks until he gets drunk.46The master of that servant will come back on a day the servant doesn’t expect him. The master will return at an hour the servant doesn’t know. Then the master will cut him to pieces. He will send the servant to the place where unbelievers go.47‘Suppose a servant knows the master’s wishes. But the servant doesn’t get ready and doesn’t do what the master wants. Then that servant will receive a heavy beating.48But suppose the servant does not know his master’s wishes. And suppose the servant does things for which he should be punished. He will receive a lighter beating. Much will be required of everyone who has been given much. Even more will be asked of the person who is supposed to take care of much.
Jesus will separate people from one another
49‘I have come to bring fire on the earth. How I wish the fire had already started!50But I have a baptism of suffering to go through. And I must go through it.51Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you. I have come to separate people.52From now on there will be five members in a family, each one against the other. There will be three against two and two against three.53They will be separated. Father will turn against son and son against father. Mother will turn against daughter and daughter against mother. Mother-in-law will turn against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.’
Understanding the meaning of what is happening
54Jesus spoke to the crowd. He said, ‘You see a cloud rising in the west. Right away you say, “It’s going to rain.” And it does.55The south wind blows. So you say, “It’s going to be hot.” And it is.56You pretenders! You know how to understand the appearance of the earth and the sky. Why can’t you understand the meaning of what is happening right now?57‘Why don’t you judge for yourselves what is right?58Suppose someone has a claim against you, and you are on your way to court. Try hard to settle the matter on the way. If you don’t, that person may drag you off to the judge. The judge may turn you over to the officer. And the officer may throw you into prison.59I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the very last penny!’
