Die Fußwaschung

1 Vor dem Passafest aber erkannte Jesus, dass seine Stunde gekommen war, dass er aus dieser Welt ginge zum Vater. Wie er die Seinen geliebt hatte, die in der Welt waren, so liebte er sie bis ans Ende. (Joh 7,30; Joh 17,1) 2 Und nach dem Abendessen – als schon der Teufel dem Judas, dem Sohn des Simon Iskariot, ins Herz gegeben hatte, dass er ihn verriete; (Lk 22,3) 3 Jesus aber wusste, dass ihm der Vater alles in seine Hände gegeben hatte und dass er von Gott gekommen war und zu Gott ging – (Joh 3,35; Joh 16,28) 4 da stand er vom Mahl auf, legte seine Kleider ab und nahm einen Schurz und umgürtete sich. 5 Danach goss er Wasser in ein Becken, fing an, den Jüngern die Füße zu waschen und zu trocknen mit dem Schurz, mit dem er umgürtet war. 6 Da kam er zu Simon Petrus; der sprach zu ihm: Herr, du wäschst mir die Füße? 7 Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Was ich tue, das verstehst du jetzt nicht; du wirst es aber hernach erfahren. 8 Da sprach Petrus zu ihm: Nimmermehr sollst du mir die Füße waschen! Jesus antwortete ihm: Wenn ich dich nicht wasche, so hast du kein Teil an mir. 9 Spricht zu ihm Simon Petrus: Herr, nicht die Füße allein, sondern auch die Hände und das Haupt! 10 Spricht Jesus zu ihm: Wer gewaschen ist, bedarf nichts, als dass ihm die Füße gewaschen werden; er ist vielmehr ganz rein. Und ihr seid rein, aber nicht alle. (Joh 15,3) 11 Denn er wusste, wer ihn verraten würde; darum sprach er: Ihr seid nicht alle rein. 12 Als er nun ihre Füße gewaschen hatte, nahm er seine Kleider und setzte sich wieder nieder und sprach zu ihnen: Wisst ihr, was ich euch getan habe? 13 Ihr nennt mich Meister und Herr und sagt es mit Recht, denn ich bin’s auch. (Mt 23,8; Mt 23,10) 14 Wenn nun ich, euer Herr und Meister, euch die Füße gewaschen habe, so sollt auch ihr euch untereinander die Füße waschen. (Lk 22,27) 15 Denn ein Beispiel habe ich euch gegeben, damit ihr tut, wie ich euch getan habe. (Phil 2,5; 1Petr 2,21) 16 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Der Knecht ist nicht größer als sein Herr und der Gesandte nicht größer als der, der ihn gesandt hat. (Mt 10,24) 17 Wenn ihr dies wisst – selig seid ihr, wenn ihr’s tut. (Mt 7,24) 18 Ich spreche nicht von euch allen; ich weiß, welche ich erwählt habe. Aber es muss die Schrift erfüllt werden: »Der mein Brot aß, tritt mich mit Füßen.« 19 Schon jetzt sage ich’s euch, ehe es geschieht, damit ihr, wenn es geschehen ist, glaubt, dass ich es bin. 20 Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Wer jemanden aufnimmt, den ich senden werde, der nimmt mich auf; wer aber mich aufnimmt, der nimmt den auf, der mich gesandt hat. (Mt 10,40)

Jesus, der Lieblingsjünger und der Verräter

21 Als Jesus das gesagt hatte, wurde er erregt im Geist und bezeugte und sprach: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Einer unter euch wird mich verraten. (Mt 26,21; Mk 14,18; Lk 22,21; Joh 12,27)

22 Da sahen sich die Jünger untereinander an, und ihnen wurde bange, von wem er wohl redete. 23 Es war aber einer unter seinen Jüngern, der zu Tische lag an der Brust Jesu, den hatte Jesus lieb. (Joh 19,26; Joh 20,2; Joh 21,20) 24 Dem winkte Simon Petrus, dass er fragen sollte, wer es wäre, von dem er redete. 25 Da lehnte der sich an die Brust Jesu und fragte ihn: Herr, wer ist’s? 26 Jesus antwortete: Der ist’s, dem ich den Bissen eintauche und gebe. Und er nahm den Bissen, tauchte ihn ein und gab ihn Judas, dem Sohn des Simon Iskariot. 27 Und nach dem Bissen fuhr der Satan in ihn. Da sprach Jesus zu ihm: Was du tust, das tue bald! 28 Niemand am Tisch aber wusste, wozu er ihm das sagte. 29 Denn einige meinten, weil Judas den Beutel hatte, spräche Jesus zu ihm: Kaufe, was wir zum Fest nötig haben!, oder dass er den Armen etwas geben sollte. 30 Als er nun den Bissen genommen hatte, ging er alsbald hinaus. Und es war Nacht.

Die Verherrlichung und das neue Gebot

31 Da Judas nun hinausgegangen war, spricht Jesus: Jetzt ist der Menschensohn verherrlicht, und Gott ist verherrlicht in ihm. (Joh 12,23; Joh 12,28) 32 Ist Gott verherrlicht in ihm, so wird Gott ihn auch verherrlichen in sich und wird ihn bald verherrlichen. (Joh 17,1) 33 Ihr Kinder, ich bin noch eine kleine Weile bei euch. Ihr werdet mich suchen. Und wie ich zu den Juden sagte, sage ich jetzt auch zu euch: Wo ich hingehe, da könnt ihr nicht hinkommen. (Joh 8,21) 34 Ein neues Gebot gebe ich euch, dass ihr euch untereinander liebt, wie ich euch geliebt habe, damit auch ihr einander lieb habt. (Joh 15,12; Joh 15,17) 35 Daran wird jedermann erkennen, dass ihr meine Jünger seid, wenn ihr Liebe untereinander habt.

Die Ankündigung der Verleugnung des Petrus

36 Spricht Simon Petrus zu ihm: Herr, wo gehst du hin? Jesus antwortete ihm: Wo ich hingehe, kannst du mir jetzt nicht folgen; aber du wirst mir später folgen. (Mt 26,33; Mk 14,29; Lk 22,31; Joh 21,18)

37 Petrus spricht zu ihm: Herr, warum kann ich dir jetzt nicht folgen? Ich will mein Leben für dich lassen. 38 Jesus antwortete ihm: Du willst dein Leben für mich lassen? Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage dir: Der Hahn wird nicht krähen, bis du mich dreimal verleugnet hast.

Jesus washes his disciples’ feet

1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world. It was time for him to go to the Father. Jesus loved his disciples who were in the world. So he now loved them to the very end. 2 They were having their evening meal. The devil had already tempted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. He had urged Judas to hand Jesus over to his enemies. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put everything under his power. He also knew he had come from God and was returning to God. 4 So he got up from the meal and took off his outer clothes. He wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a large bowl. Then he began to wash his disciples’ feet. He dried them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter. ‘Lord’, Peter said to him, ‘are you going to wash my feet?’ 7 Jesus replied, ‘You don’t realise now what I am doing. But later you will understand.’ 8 ‘No’, said Peter. ‘You will never wash my feet.’ Jesus answered, ‘Unless I wash you, you can’t share life with me.’ 9 ‘Lord’, Simon Peter replied, ‘not just my feet! Wash my hands and my head too!’ 10 Jesus answered, ‘People who have had a bath need to wash only their feet. The rest of their body is clean. And you are clean. But not all of you are.’ 11 Jesus knew who was going to hand him over to his enemies. That was why he said not every one was clean. 12 When Jesus finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes. Then he returned to his place. ‘Do you understand what I have done for you?’ he asked them. 13 ‘You call me “Teacher” and “Lord”. You are right. That is what I am. 14 I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet. So you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have given you an example. You should do as I have done for you. 16 What I’m about to tell you is true. A slave is not more important than his master. And a messenger is not more important than the one who sends him. 17 Now you know these things. So you will be blessed if you do them.

Jesus tells what Judas will do

18 ‘I am not talking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this will happen so that this passage of Scripture will come true. It says, “The one who shared my bread has turned against me.” (Ps 41,9) 19 ‘I am telling you now, before it happens. When it does happen, you will believe that I am who I am. 20 What I’m about to tell you is true. Anyone who accepts someone I send accepts me. And anyone who accepts me accepts the one who sent me.’ 21 After he had said this, Jesus’ spirit was troubled. He said, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. One of you is going to hand me over to my enemies.’ 22 His disciples stared at one another. They had no idea which one of them he meant. 23 The disciple Jesus loved was next to him at the table. 24 Simon Peter motioned to that disciple. He said, ‘Ask Jesus which one he means.’ 25 The disciple was leaning back against Jesus. He asked him, ‘Lord, who is it?’ 26 Jesus answered, ‘It is the one I will give this piece of bread to. I will give it to him after I have dipped it in the dish.’ He dipped the piece of bread. Then he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, ‘Do quickly what you are going to do.’ 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Judas was in charge of the money. So some of the disciples thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast. Others thought Jesus was talking about giving something to poor people. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.

Peter will say he does not know Jesus

31 After Judas was gone, Jesus spoke. He said, ‘Now the Son of Man receives glory. And he brings glory to God. 32 If the Son brings glory to God, God himself will bring glory to the Son. God will do it at once. 33 ‘My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me. Just as I told the Jews, so I am telling you now. You can’t come where I am going. 34 ‘I give you a new command. Love one another. You must love one another, just as I have loved you. 35 If you love one another, everyone will know you are my disciples.’ 36 Simon Peter asked him, ‘Lord, where are you going?’ Jesus replied, ‘Where I am going you can’t follow now. But you will follow me later.’ 37 ‘Lord’, Peter asked, ‘why can’t I follow you now? I will give my life for you.’ 38 Then Jesus answered, ‘Will you really give your life for me? What I’m about to tell you is true. Before the cockerel crows, you will say three times that you don’t know me!
