1Meine Brüder und Schwestern, haltet den Glauben an Jesus Christus, unsern Herrn der Herrlichkeit, frei von allem Ansehen der Person.2Denn wenn in eure Versammlung ein Mann kommt mit einem goldenen Ring und in herrlicher Kleidung, es kommt aber auch ein Armer in unsauberer Kleidung,3und ihr seht auf den, der herrlich gekleidet ist, und sprecht zu ihm: Setz du dich hierher auf den guten Platz!, und sprecht zu dem Armen: Stell du dich dorthin!, oder: Setz dich unten zu meinen Füßen!,4macht ihr dann nicht Unterschiede unter euch und urteilt mit bösen Gedanken?5Hört zu, meine Lieben! Hat nicht Gott erwählt die Armen in der Welt, die im Glauben reich sind und Erben des Reichs, das er verheißen hat denen, die ihn lieb haben? (Lk 6,20; 1Kor 1,26)6Ihr aber habt dem Armen Unehre angetan. Sind es nicht die Reichen, die Gewalt gegen euch üben und euch vor Gericht ziehen? (Apg 19,24)7Verlästern sie nicht den guten Namen, der über euch genannt ist? (1Petr 4,14)8Wenn ihr das königliche Gesetz erfüllt nach der Schrift: »Liebe deinen Nächsten wie dich selbst«, so tut ihr recht; (3Mo 19,18)9wenn ihr aber die Person anseht, tut ihr Sünde und werdet überführt vom Gesetz als Übertreter. (5Mo 1,17)10Denn wenn jemand das ganze Gesetz hält und sündigt gegen ein einziges Gebot, der ist am ganzen Gesetz schuldig. (Mt 5,19)11Denn der gesagt hat: »Du sollst nicht ehebrechen«, der hat auch gesagt: »Du sollst nicht töten.« Wenn du nun nicht die Ehe brichst, tötest aber, bist du ein Übertreter des Gesetzes. (2Mo 20,13)12Redet so und handelt so als Leute, die durchs Gesetz der Freiheit gerichtet werden sollen.13Denn es wird ein unbarmherziges Gericht über den ergehen, der nicht Barmherzigkeit getan hat; Barmherzigkeit aber triumphiert über das Gericht. (Mt 5,7; Mt 25,45)
Glaube ohne Werke ist tot
14Was hilft’s, Brüder und Schwestern, wenn jemand sagt, er habe Glauben, und hat doch keine Werke? Kann denn der Glaube ihn selig machen? (Mt 7,21; Röm 3,21)15Wenn ein Bruder oder eine Schwester nackt ist und Mangel hat an täglicher Nahrung16und jemand unter euch spricht zu ihnen: Geht hin in Frieden, wärmt euch und sättigt euch!, ihr gebt ihnen aber nicht, was der Leib nötig hat – was hilft ihnen das?17So ist auch der Glaube, wenn er nicht Werke hat, tot in sich selber.18Aber es könnte jemand sagen: Du hast Glauben, und ich habe Werke. Zeige mir deinen Glauben ohne die Werke, so will ich dir meinen Glauben zeigen aus meinen Werken. (Gal 5,6)19Du glaubst, dass nur einer Gott ist? Du tust recht daran; die Teufel glauben’s auch und zittern. (5Mo 6,4; 1Kor 8,6)20Willst du nun einsehen, du törichter Mensch, dass der Glaube ohne Werke nutzlos ist?21Ist nicht Abraham, unser Vater, durch Werke gerecht geworden, als er seinen Sohn Isaak auf dem Altar opferte? (1Mo 22,1; Röm 4,2; Hebr 11,17)22Da siehst du, dass der Glaube zusammengewirkt hat mit seinen Werken, und durch die Werke ist der Glaube vollkommen geworden.23So ist die Schrift erfüllt, die da spricht: »Abraham hat Gott geglaubt und das ist ihm zur Gerechtigkeit gerechnet worden«, und er wurde »ein Freund Gottes« genannt. (1Mo 15,6)24So seht ihr nun, dass der Mensch durch Werke gerecht wird, nicht durch Glauben allein.25Desgleichen die Hure Rahab: Ist sie nicht durch Werke gerecht geworden, als sie die Boten aufnahm und sie auf einem andern Weg hinausließ? (Jos 2,1; Hebr 11,31)26Denn wie der Leib ohne Geist tot ist, so ist auch der Glaube ohne Werke tot.
1My brothers and sisters, you are believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. So treat everyone the same.2Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes. And suppose a poor man in dirty old clothes also comes in.3Would you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes? Would you say, ‘Here’s a good seat for you’? Would you say to the poor man, ‘You stand there’? Or ‘Sit on the floor by my feet’?4If you would, aren’t you treating some people better than others? Aren’t you like judges who have evil thoughts?5My dear brothers and sisters, listen to me. Hasn’t God chosen those who are poor in the world’s eyes to be rich in faith? Hasn’t he chosen them to receive the kingdom? Hasn’t he promised it to those who love him?6But you have disrespected poor people. Aren’t rich people taking advantage of you? Aren’t they dragging you into court?7Aren’t they speaking evil things against the worthy name of Jesus? Remember, you belong to him.8The royal law is found in Scripture. It says, ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself.’ If you really keep this law, you are doing what is right. (3Mo 19,18)9But you sin if you don’t treat everyone the same. The law judges you because you have broken it.10Suppose you keep the whole law but trip over just one part of it. Then you are guilty of breaking all of it.11God said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ He also said, ‘Do not commit murder.’ Suppose you don’t commit adultery but do commit murder. Then you have broken the law. (2Mo 20,13; 2Mo 20,14; 5Mo 5,17; 5Mo 5,18)12Speak and act like people who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom.13Those who have not shown mercy will not receive mercy when they are judged. To show mercy is better than to judge.
Show your faith by what you do
14Suppose a person claims to have faith but doesn’t act on their faith. My brothers and sisters, can this kind of faith save them?15Suppose a brother or a sister has no clothes or food.16Suppose one of you says to them, ‘Go. I hope everything turns out fine for you. Keep warm. Eat well.’ And suppose you do nothing about what they really need. Then what good have you done?17It is the same with faith. If it doesn’t cause us to do something, it’s dead.18But someone will say, ‘You have faith. I do good deeds.’ Show me your faith that doesn’t cause you to do good deeds. And I will show you my faith by the goods deeds I do.19You believe there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that. And they tremble!20You foolish person! Do you want proof that faith without good deeds is useless?21Our father Abraham offered his son Isaac on the altar. Wasn’t he considered to be right with God because of what he did?22So you see that what he believed and what he did were working together. What he did made his faith complete.23That is what Scripture means where it says, ‘Abraham believed God. God accepted Abraham because he believed. So his faith made him right with God.’ And that’s not all. God called Abraham his friend. (1Mo 15,6)24So you see that a person is considered right with God by what they do. It doesn’t happen only because they believe.25Didn’t God consider even Rahab the prostitute to be right with him? That’s because of what she did for the spies. She gave them a place to stay. Then she sent them off in a different direction.26A person’s body without their spirit is dead. In the same way, faith without good deeds is dead.
