Verteidigung des Apostels gegen persönliche Angriffe

1 Ich selbst aber, Paulus, ermahne euch bei der Sanftmut und Güte Christi, der ich in eurer Gegenwart unterwürfig sein soll, aber kühn gegen euch, wenn ich fern bin. 2 Ich bitte aber, dass ich, wenn ich bei euch bin, nicht kühn sein muss in der Festigkeit, mit der ich gegen einige vorzugehen gedenke, die unsern Wandel für fleischlich halten. (1Kor 4,21; 2Kor 13,1) 3 Denn obwohl wir im Fleisch wandeln, kämpfen wir doch nicht auf fleischliche Weise. 4 Denn die Waffen unsres Kampfes sind nicht fleischlich, sondern mächtig im Dienste Gottes, Festungen zu zerstören. Absichten zerstören wir (Eph 6,13) 5 und alles Hohe, das sich erhebt gegen die Erkenntnis Gottes, und nehmen gefangen alles Denken in den Gehorsam gegen Christus. (Spr 21,22) 6 So sind wir bereit, zu strafen allen Ungehorsam, sobald euer Gehorsam vollkommen geworden ist. 7 Seht, was vor Augen liegt! Verlässt sich jemand darauf, dass er Christus angehört, der bedenke wiederum auch dies bei sich, dass, wie er Christus angehört, so auch wir! 8 Auch wenn ich mich noch mehr rühmte der Vollmacht, die uns der Herr gegeben hat, euch zu erbauen und nicht zu zerstören, so würde ich nicht zuschanden werden. (2Kor 13,10) 9 Das sage ich aber, damit es nicht scheint, als wollte ich euch mit den Briefen schrecken. 10 Denn seine Briefe, sagen sie, wiegen schwer und sind stark; aber wenn er selbst anwesend ist, ist er schwach und seine Rede kläglich. (2Kor 11,6) 11 Wer so redet, der bedenke: Wie wir abwesend durch das Wort unserer Briefe wirken, so auch anwesend mit der Tat. (2Kor 13,2; 2Kor 13,10)

Der Maßstab für die Beurteilung des Apostels

12 Denn wir wagen nicht, uns unter die zu rechnen oder mit denen zu vergleichen, die sich selbst empfehlen; aber weil sie sich nur an sich selbst messen und mit sich selbst vergleichen, verstehen sie nichts. (2Kor 3,1; 2Kor 5,12) 13 Wir aber wollen uns nicht über alles Maß hinaus rühmen, sondern nur nach dem Maß, das uns Gott zugemessen hat, nämlich dass wir auch bis zu euch gelangen sollten. (Röm 12,3; Röm 15,20) 14 Denn es ist nicht so, dass wir uns zu viel anmaßen, als wären wir nicht bis zu euch gelangt; denn wir sind ja mit dem Evangelium Christi auch bis zu euch gekommen 15 und rühmen uns nicht über alles Maß hinaus mit dem, was andere gearbeitet haben. Wir haben aber die Hoffnung, dass wir, wenn euer Glaube in euch wächst, nach unserem Maß überschwänglich zu Ehren kommen 16 und das Evangelium auch denen predigen, die jenseits von euch wohnen, und rühmen uns nicht mit dem, was andere nach ihrem Maß vollbracht haben. 17 »Wer sich aber rühmt, der rühme sich des Herrn« (1Kor 1,31) 18 Denn nicht der ist bewährt, der sich selbst empfiehlt, sondern der, den der Herr empfiehlt.

Paul speaks up for his service to the church

1 Christ is humble and free of pride. Because of this, I make my appeal to you. I, Paul, am the one you call ‘shy’ when I am face to face with you. But when I am away from you, you think I am ‘bold’ towards you. 2 I am coming to see you. Please don’t make me be as bold as I expect to be towards some people. They think that I live the way the people of this world live. 3 I do live in the world. But I don’t fight my battles the way the people of the world do. 4 The weapons I fight with are not the weapons the world uses. In fact, it is just the opposite. My weapons have the power of God to destroy the camps of the enemy. 5 I destroy every claim and every reason that keeps people from knowing God. I keep every thought under control in order to make it obey Christ. 6 Until you have obeyed completely, I will be ready to punish you every time you don’t obey. 7 You are judging only by how things look on the surface. Suppose someone is sure they belong to Christ. Then they should consider again that we belong to Christ just as much as they do. 8 Do I boast too much about the authority the Lord gave me? If I do, it’s because I want to build you up, not tear you down. And I’m not ashamed of that kind of boasting. 9 Don’t think that I’m trying to scare you with my letters. 10 Some say, ‘His letters sound important. They are powerful. But in person he doesn’t seem like much. And what he says doesn’t amount to anything.’ 11 People like that have a lot to learn. What I say in my letters when I’m away from you, I will do in my actions when I’m with you. 12 I don’t dare to compare myself with those who praise themselves. I’m not that kind of person. They measure themselves by themselves. They compare themselves with themselves. When they do that, they are not wise. 13 But I won’t boast more than I should. God himself has given me an opportunity for serving. I will only boast about what I have done with that opportunity. This opportunity for serving also includes you. 14 I am not going too far in my boasting. I would be going too far if I hadn’t come to where you live. But I did get there with the good news about Christ. 15 And I won’t boast about work done by others. If I did, I would be boasting more than I should. As your faith continues to grow, I hope that my work among you will greatly increase. 16 Then I will be able to preach the good news in the areas beyond you. I don’t want to boast about work already done in someone else’s territory. 17 But, ‘The one who boasts should boast about what the Lord has done.’ (Jer 9,24) 18 Those who praise themselves are not accepted. Those the Lord praises are accepted.
