Josef in Potifars Haus

1 Josef wurde hinab nach Ägypten geführt, und Potifar, ein Ägypter, der Kämmerer des Pharao und Oberste der Leibwache, kaufte ihn von den Ismaelitern, die ihn hinabgebracht hatten. (1Mo 37,28; 1Mo 37,36) 2 Und der HERR war mit Josef, sodass er ein Mann wurde, dem alles glückte. Und er war in seines Herrn, des Ägypters, Hause. (1Mo 26,24) 3 Und sein Herr sah, dass der HERR mit ihm war; und alles, was er tat, ließ der HERR in seiner Hand glücken, 4 sodass er Gnade fand in seinen Augen und sein Diener wurde. Er setzte ihn über sein Haus; und alles, was er hatte, gab er in seine Hände. 5 Und von der Zeit an, da er ihn über sein Haus und alle seine Güter gesetzt hatte, segnete der HERR des Ägypters Haus um Josefs willen, und es war lauter Segen des HERRN in allem, was er hatte, zu Hause und auf dem Felde. (1Mo 30,27) 6 Darum ließ er alles in Josefs Händen, was er hatte, und kümmerte sich selbst um nichts außer um das, was er aß und trank. Und Josef war schön an Gestalt und hübsch von Angesicht. (1Mo 43,32) 7 Und es begab sich danach, dass seines Herrn Frau ihre Augen auf Josef warf und sprach: Schlafe bei mir! 8 Er weigerte sich aber und sprach zur Frau seines Herrn: Siehe, mein Herr kümmert sich selbst um nichts, was im Hause ist, und alles, was er hat, das hat er in meine Hände gegeben; 9 er ist in diesem Hause nicht größer als ich, und er hat mir nichts vorenthalten außer dir, weil du seine Frau bist. Wie sollte ich denn nun ein solch großes Übel tun und gegen Gott sündigen? (2Mo 20,14; 3Mo 18,20) 10 Und sie bedrängte Josef mit solchen Worten täglich. Aber er gehorchte ihr nicht, dass er bei ihr schlief und bei ihr wäre. 11 Es begab sich an einem dieser Tage, dass Josef in das Haus ging, seine Arbeit zu tun, und kein Mensch vom Gesinde des Hauses war dabei. 12 Und sie erwischte ihn bei seinem Kleid und sprach: Schlafe bei mir! Aber er ließ das Kleid in ihrer Hand und floh und lief zum Hause hinaus. 13 Als sie nun sah, dass er sein Kleid in ihrer Hand ließ und hinaus entfloh, 14 rief sie das Gesinde ihres Hauses und sprach zu ihnen: Seht, er hat uns den hebräischen Mann hergebracht, dass der seinen Mutwillen mit uns treibe. Er kam zu mir herein und wollte bei mir schlafen; aber ich rief mit lauter Stimme. 15 Und als er hörte, dass ich ein Geschrei machte und rief, da ließ er sein Kleid bei mir und floh und lief hinaus. 16 Und sie legte sein Kleid neben sich, bis sein Herr heimkam, 17 und sagte zu ihm ebendieselben Worte und sprach: Der hebräische Knecht, den du uns hergebracht hast, kam zu mir herein und wollte seinen Mutwillen mit mir treiben. 18 Als ich aber ein Geschrei machte und rief, da ließ er sein Kleid bei mir und floh hinaus.

Josef im Gefängnis

19 Als sein Herr die Worte seiner Frau hörte, die sie ihm sagte und sprach: So hat dein Knecht an mir getan, wurde er sehr zornig. 20 Da nahm ihn Josefs Herr und warf ihn ins Gefängnis, in dem des Königs Gefangene waren. Und er blieb allda im Gefängnis. 21 Aber der HERR war mit Josef und neigte ihm die Herzen zu und schenkte ihm die Gunst des Amtmanns über das Gefängnis, 22 sodass der ihm alle Gefangenen im Gefängnis in seine Hand gab, und alles, was dort zu tun war, geschah durch ihn. 23 Der Amtmann über das Gefängnis kümmerte sich um nichts; denn der HERR war mit Josef, und was er tat, dazu gab der HERR Glück.

Joseph and the wife of Potiphar

1 Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar had bought him from the Ishmaelite traders who had taken him there. Potiphar was one of Pharaoh’s officials. He was the captain of the palace guard. 2 The LORD was with Joseph. He gave him great success. Joseph lived in Potiphar’s house. 3 Joseph’s master saw that the LORD was with him. He saw that the LORD made Joseph successful in everything he did. 4 So Potiphar was pleased with Joseph and made him his attendant. He put Joseph in charge of his house. He trusted Joseph to take care of everything he owned. 5 From that time on, the LORD blessed Potiphar’s family and servants because of Joseph. He blessed everything Potiphar had in his house and field. 6 So Joseph took good care of everything Potiphar owned. With Joseph in charge, Potiphar didn’t have to worry about anything except the food he ate. Joseph was strong and handsome. 7 After a while, his master’s wife noticed Joseph. She said to him, ‘Come to bed with me!’ 8 But he refused. ‘My master has put me in charge,’ he told her. ‘Now he doesn’t have to worry about anything in the house. He trusts me to take care of everything he owns. 9 No one in this house is in a higher position than I am. My master hasn’t held anything back from me, except you. You are his wife. So how could I do an evil thing like that? How could I sin against God?’ 10 She spoke to Joseph day after day. But he told her he wouldn’t go to bed with her. He didn’t even want to be with her. 11 One day Joseph went into the house to take care of his duties. None of the family servants was inside. 12 Potiphar’s wife grabbed him by his coat. ‘Come to bed with me!’ she said. But he left his coat in her hand. And he ran out of the house. 13 She saw that he had left his coat in her hand and had run out of the house. 14 So she called her servants. ‘Look’, she said to them, ‘this Hebrew slave has been brought here to make fun of us! He came in here to force me to have sex with him. But I screamed for help. 15 He heard my scream. So he left his coat beside me and ran out of the house.’ 16 She kept Joseph’s coat with her until Potiphar came home. 17 Then she told him her story. She said, ‘That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to rape me. 18 But I screamed for help. So he left his coat beside me and ran out of the house.’ 19 Potiphar’s wife told him, ‘That’s how your slave treated me.’ When Joseph’s master heard her story, he became very angry. 20 So he put Joseph in prison. It was the place where the king’s prisoners were kept. While Joseph was there in the prison, 21 the LORD was with him. He was kind to him. So the man running the prison was pleased with Joseph. 22 He put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners. He made him responsible for everything done there. 23 The man who ran the prison didn’t pay attention to anything in Joseph’s care. That’s because the LORD was with Joseph. He gave Joseph success in everything he did.
