1 Da es nun schon viele unternommen haben, Bericht zu geben von den Geschichten, die sich unter uns erfüllt haben, 2 wie uns das überliefert haben, die es von Anfang an selbst gesehen haben und Diener des Wortes gewesen sind, (1Joh 1,1) 3 habe auch ich’s für gut gehalten, nachdem ich alles von Anfang an sorgfältig erkundet habe, es für dich, hochgeehrter Theophilus, in guter Ordnung aufzuschreiben, (Apg 1,1; Kol 4,14) 4 auf dass du den sicheren Grund der Lehre erfährst, in der du unterrichtet bist.

Die Ankündigung der Geburt Johannes des Täufers

5 Zu der Zeit des Herodes, des Königs von Judäa, lebte ein Priester von der Ordnung Abija mit Namen Zacharias, und seine Frau war von den Töchtern Aaron, die hieß Elisabeth. (1Chr 24,10; 1Chr 24,19) 6 Sie waren aber alle beide gerecht und fromm vor Gott und lebten in allen Geboten und Satzungen des Herrn untadelig. 7 Und sie hatten kein Kind; denn Elisabeth war unfruchtbar, und beide waren hochbetagt. 8 Und es begab sich, als Zacharias den Priesterdienst vor Gott versah, da seine Ordnung an der Reihe war, 9 dass ihn nach dem Brauch der Priesterschaft das Los traf, das Räucheropfer darzubringen; und er ging in den Tempel des Herrn. (2Mo 30,7) 10 Und die ganze Menge des Volkes betete draußen zur Stunde des Räucheropfers. 11 Da erschien ihm der Engel des Herrn, der stand an der rechten Seite des Räucheraltars. 12 Und als Zacharias ihn sah, erschrak er, und Furcht überfiel ihn. 13 Aber der Engel sprach zu ihm: Fürchte dich nicht, Zacharias, denn dein Gebet ist erhört, und deine Frau Elisabeth wird dir einen Sohn gebären, dem sollst du den Namen Johannes geben. 14 Und du wirst Freude und Wonne haben, und viele werden sich über seine Geburt freuen. 15 Denn er wird groß sein vor dem Herrn; Wein und starkes Getränk wird er nicht trinken und wird schon von Mutterleib an erfüllt werden mit dem Heiligen Geist. (Ri 13,4) 16 Und er wird viele der Israeliten zu dem Herrn, ihrem Gott, bekehren. 17 Und er wird vor ihm hergehen im Geist und in der Kraft des Elia, zu bekehren die Herzen der Väter zu den Kindern und die Ungehorsamen zu der Klugheit der Gerechten, zuzurichten dem Herrn ein Volk, das wohl vorbereitet ist. (Mal 3,1; Mal 3,23; Mt 17,11) 18 Und Zacharias sprach zu dem Engel: Woran soll ich das erkennen? Denn ich bin alt und meine Frau ist hochbetagt. (1Mo 18,11) 19 Der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Ich bin Gabriel, der vor Gott steht, und bin gesandt, mit dir zu reden und dir dies zu verkündigen. (Dan 8,16) 20 Und siehe, du wirst verstummen und nicht reden können bis zu dem Tag, an dem dies geschehen wird, weil du meinen Worten nicht geglaubt hast, die erfüllt werden sollen zu ihrer Zeit. 21 Und das Volk wartete auf Zacharias und wunderte sich, dass er so lange im Tempel blieb. 22 Als er aber herauskam, konnte er nicht mit ihnen reden; und sie merkten, dass er eine Erscheinung gehabt hatte im Tempel. Und er winkte ihnen und blieb stumm. 23 Und es begab sich, als die Zeit seines Dienstes um war, da ging er heim in sein Haus. 24 Nach diesen Tagen wurde seine Frau Elisabeth schwanger und hielt sich fünf Monate verborgen und sprach: 25 So hat der Herr an mir getan in den Tagen, als er mich angesehen hat, um meine Schmach unter den Menschen von mir zu nehmen. (1Mo 30,23)

Die Ankündigung der Geburt Jesu

26 Und im sechsten Monat wurde der Engel Gabriel von Gott gesandt in eine Stadt in Galiläa, die heißt Nazareth, 27 zu einer Jungfrau, die vertraut^[1] war einem Mann mit Namen Josef vom Hause David; und die Jungfrau hieß Maria. (Mt 1,16; Mt 1,18) 28 Und der Engel kam zu ihr hinein und sprach: Sei gegrüßt, du Begnadete^[2]! Der Herr ist mit dir! 29 Sie aber erschrak über die Rede und dachte: Welch ein Gruß ist das? 30 Und der Engel sprach zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht, Maria! Du hast Gnade bei Gott gefunden. 31 Siehe, du wirst schwanger werden und einen Sohn gebären, dem sollst du den Namen Jesus geben. (Jes 7,14; Mt 1,21) 32 Der wird groß sein und Sohn des Höchsten genannt werden; und Gott der Herr wird ihm den Thron seines Vaters David geben, (Jes 9,6) 33 und er wird König sein über das Haus Jakob in Ewigkeit, und sein Reich wird kein Ende haben. 34 Da sprach Maria zu dem Engel: Wie soll das zugehen, da ich doch von keinem Manne weiß? 35 Der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihr: Der Heilige Geist wird über dich kommen, und die Kraft des Höchsten wird dich überschatten; darum wird auch das Heilige, das geboren wird, Gottes Sohn genannt werden. (Mt 1,18; Mt 1,20) 36 Und siehe, Elisabeth, deine Verwandte, ist auch schwanger mit einem Sohn, in ihrem Alter, und ist jetzt im sechsten Monat, sie, von der man sagt, dass sie unfruchtbar sei. 37 Denn bei Gott ist kein Ding unmöglich. (1Mo 18,14) 38 Maria aber sprach: Siehe, ich bin des Herrn Magd; mir geschehe, wie du gesagt hast. Und der Engel schied von ihr.

Marias Besuch bei Elisabeth (Mariä Heimsuchung)

39 Maria aber machte sich auf in diesen Tagen und ging eilends in das Gebirge zu einer Stadt in Juda 40 und kam in das Haus des Zacharias und begrüßte Elisabeth. 41 Und es begab sich, als Elisabeth den Gruß Marias hörte, hüpfte das Kind in ihrem Leibe. Und Elisabeth wurde vom Heiligen Geist erfüllt 42 und rief laut und sprach: Gesegnet bist du unter den Frauen, und gesegnet ist die Frucht deines Leibes! 43 Und wie geschieht mir, dass die Mutter meines Herrn zu mir kommt? 44 Denn siehe, als ich die Stimme deines Grußes hörte, hüpfte das Kind vor Freude in meinem Leibe. 45 Ja, selig ist, die da geglaubt hat! Denn es wird vollendet werden, was ihr gesagt ist von dem Herrn. (Lk 11,27)

Marias Lobgesang

46 Und Maria sprach: Meine Seele erhebt den Herrn, (1Sam 2,1) 47 und mein Geist freuet sich Gottes, meines Heilandes; 48 denn er hat die Niedrigkeit seiner Magd angesehen. Siehe, von nun an werden mich selig preisen alle Kindeskinder. 49 Denn er hat große Dinge an mir getan, der da mächtig ist und dessen Name heilig ist. 50 Und seine Barmherzigkeit währet für und für bei denen, die ihn fürchten. (Ps 103,13; Ps 103,17) 51 Er übt Gewalt mit seinem Arm und zerstreut, die hoffärtig sind in ihres Herzens Sinn. (1Mo 11,8) 52 Er stößt die Gewaltigen vom Thron und erhebt die Niedrigen. (Ps 147,6) 53 Die Hungrigen füllt er mit Gütern und lässt die Reichen leer ausgehen. (Ps 34,11; Ps 107,9) 54 Er gedenkt der Barmherzigkeit und hilft seinem Diener Israel auf,^[3] 55 wie er geredet hat zu unsern Vätern, Abraham und seinen Nachkommen in Ewigkeit. (1Mo 17,7; 1Mo 18,18) 56 Und Maria blieb bei ihr etwa drei Monate; danach kehrte sie wieder heim.

Die Geburt Johannes des Täufers

57 Und für Elisabeth kam die Zeit, dass sie gebären sollte; und sie gebar einen Sohn. 58 Und ihre Nachbarn und Verwandten hörten, dass der Herr große Barmherzigkeit an ihr getan hatte, und freuten sich mit ihr. 59 Und es begab sich am achten Tag, da kamen sie, das Kindlein zu beschneiden, und wollten es nach seinem Vater Zacharias nennen. (1Mo 17,12) 60 Aber seine Mutter antwortete und sprach: Nein, sondern er soll Johannes heißen. 61 Und sie sprachen zu ihr: Ist doch niemand in deiner Verwandtschaft, der so heißt. 62 Und sie winkten seinem Vater, wie er ihn nennen lassen wollte. 63 Und er forderte eine kleine Tafel und schrieb: Er heißt Johannes. Und sie wunderten sich alle. 64 Und sogleich wurde sein Mund und seine Zunge aufgetan, und er redete und lobte Gott. 65 Und es kam Furcht über alle Nachbarn; und diese ganze Geschichte wurde bekannt auf dem ganzen Gebirge Judäas. 66 Und alle, die es hörten, nahmen’s zu Herzen und sprachen: Was wird aus diesem Kindlein werden? Denn die Hand des Herrn war mit ihm.

Der Lobgesang des Zacharias

67 Und sein Vater Zacharias wurde vom Heiligen Geist erfüllt, weissagte und sprach: 68 Gelobt sei der Herr, der Gott Israels! Denn er hat besucht und erlöst sein Volk (Lk 7,16) 69 und hat uns aufgerichtet ein Horn^[4] des Heils im Hause seines Dieners David – (1Sam 2,10; Ps 18,3; Ps 132,17) 70 wie er vorzeiten geredet hat durch den Mund seiner heiligen Propheten –, 71 dass er uns errettete von unsern Feinden und aus der Hand aller, die uns hassen, 72 und Barmherzigkeit erzeigte unsern Vätern und gedächte an seinen heiligen Bund, (1Mo 17,7) 73 an den Eid, den er geschworen hat unserm Vater Abraham, uns zu geben, (1Mo 22,16; Mi 7,20) 74 dass wir, erlöst aus der Hand der Feinde, ihm dienten ohne Furcht 75 unser Leben lang in Heiligkeit und Gerechtigkeit vor seinen Augen. (Tit 2,12; Tit 2,14) 76 Und du, Kindlein, wirst Prophet des Höchsten heißen. Denn du wirst dem Herrn vorangehen, dass du seinen Weg bereitest (Mal 3,1) 77 und Erkenntnis des Heils gebest seinem Volk in der Vergebung ihrer Sünden, (Jer 31,34) 78 durch die herzliche Barmherzigkeit unseres Gottes, durch die uns besuchen wird das aufgehende Licht aus der Höhe, (Jes 60,1) 79 auf dass es erscheine denen, die sitzen in Finsternis und Schatten des Todes, und richte unsere Füße auf den Weg des Friedens. (Jes 9,1) 80 Und das Kindlein wuchs und wurde stark im Geist. Und er war in der Wüste bis zu dem Tag, an dem er vor das Volk Israel treten sollte. (Mt 3,1)

1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, 2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; 3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, 4 That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed. 5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years. 8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course, 9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense. 11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. 16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. 17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. 18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. 20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. 21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple. 22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless. 23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house. 24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, 25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men. 26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing shall be impossible. 38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. 39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; 40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. 41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: 42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. 46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. 48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. 51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. 53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. 54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; 55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. 56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house. 57 Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. 58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her. 59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. 60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. 61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. 62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. 63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. 64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God. 65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. 66 And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him. 67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, 68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, 69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; 70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: 71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; 72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; 73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, 74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, 75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. 76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; 77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, 78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, 79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. 80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
