Die Verteidigungsrede des Paulus

1 Ihr Männer, liebe Brüder und Väter, hört mir zu, wenn ich mich jetzt vor euch verantworte. 2 Als sie aber hörten, dass er auf Hebräisch zu ihnen redete, wurden sie noch stiller. Und er sprach: (Apg 21,40) 3 Ich bin ein jüdischer Mann, geboren in Tarsus in Kilikien, aufgewachsen aber in dieser Stadt und mit aller Sorgfalt unterwiesen im väterlichen Gesetz zu Füßen Gamaliels, und war ein Eiferer für Gott, wie ihr es heute alle seid. 5 wie mir auch der Hohepriester bezeugt und der ganze Rat der Ältesten. Von ihnen empfing ich auch Briefe an die Brüder und reiste nach Damaskus, um auch die, die dort waren, gefesselt nach Jerusalem zu führen, damit sie bestraft würden. 6 Es geschah aber, als ich dorthin zog und in die Nähe von Damaskus kam, da umleuchtete mich plötzlich um die Mittagszeit ein großes Licht vom Himmel. 7 Und ich fiel zu Boden und hörte eine Stimme, die sprach zu mir: Saul, Saul, was verfolgst du mich? 8 Ich antwortete aber: Herr, wer bist du? Und er sprach zu mir: Ich bin Jesus von Nazareth^[2], den du verfolgst. 9 Die aber mit mir waren, sahen zwar das Licht, aber die Stimme dessen, der mit mir redete, hörten sie nicht. 10 Ich fragte aber: Herr, was soll ich tun? Und der Herr sprach zu mir: Steh auf und geh nach Damaskus. Dort wird man dir alles sagen, was dir zu tun aufgetragen ist. 11 Als ich aber, geblendet von der Klarheit dieses Lichtes, nicht sehen konnte, wurde ich an der Hand geleitet von denen, die bei mir waren, und kam nach Damaskus. 12 Hananias aber, ein frommer Mann nach dem Gesetz, der einen guten Ruf bei allen Juden hatte, die dort wohnten, 13 der kam zu mir, trat vor mich hin und sprach zu mir: Saul, lieber Bruder, du sollst wieder sehen. Und zur selben Stunde konnte ich ihn sehen. 14 Er aber sprach: Der Gott unserer Väter hat dich erwählt, dass du seinen Willen erkennen sollst und den Gerechten sehen und die Stimme aus seinem Munde hören; 15 denn du wirst für ihn vor allen Menschen Zeuge sein von dem, was du gesehen und gehört hast. 16 Und nun, was zögerst du? Steh auf, lass dich taufen und deine Sünden abwaschen und rufe seinen Namen an. 17 Es geschah aber, als ich wieder nach Jerusalem kam und im Tempel betete, dass ich in Verzückung geriet 18 und ihn sah. Da sprach er zu mir: Eile und geh schnell weg aus Jerusalem; denn dein Zeugnis von mir werden sie nicht annehmen. 19 Und ich sprach: Herr, sie wissen doch, dass ich gefangen nahm, die an dich glaubten, und sie in den Synagogen schlagen ließ. 20 Und als das Blut des Stephanus, deines Zeugen, vergossen wurde, stand ich auch dabei und hatte Gefallen daran und bewachte denen die Kleider, die ihn töteten. (Apg 7,58; Apg 8,1) 21 Und er sprach zu mir: Geh hin; denn ich will dich in die Ferne zu den Heiden senden. (Apg 13,2) 22 Sie hörten ihm aber zu bis zu diesem Wort; dann erhoben sie ihre Stimme und riefen: Hinweg mit diesem von der Erde! Denn er darf nicht mehr leben. (Apg 21,36)

Paulus vor dem römischen Oberst

23 Da sie aber schrien und ihre Kleider abwarfen und Staub in die Luft wirbelten, 24 befahl der Oberst, ihn in die Burg zu führen, und sagte, dass man ihn geißeln und verhören sollte, um zu erfahren, aus welchem Grund sie so gegen ihn schrien. 25 Als sie ihn aber zum Geißeln festbanden, sprach Paulus zu dem Hauptmann, der dabeistand: Ist es erlaubt bei euch, einen Menschen, der römischer Bürger ist, ohne Urteil zu geißeln? (Apg 16,37; Apg 23,27) 26 Als das der Hauptmann hörte, ging er zu dem Oberst und berichtete ihm und sprach: Was willst du tun? Dieser Mensch ist römischer Bürger. 27 Da kam der Oberst zu ihm und fragte ihn: Sage mir, bist du römischer Bürger? Er aber sprach: Ja. 28 Da sagte der Oberst: Ich habe dies Bürgerrecht für viel Geld erworben. Paulus aber sprach: Ich aber bin schon als römischer Bürger geboren. 29 Da ließen sogleich von ihm ab, die ihn verhören sollten. Und der Oberst fürchtete sich, als er vernahm, dass es ein römischer Bürger war, den er hatte festbinden lassen. 30 Am nächsten Tag wollte er genau erkunden, warum Paulus von den Juden verklagt wurde. Er band ihn los und befahl den Hohenpriestern und dem ganzen Hohen Rat zusammenzukommen und führte Paulus hinab und stellte ihn vor sie.

1 Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you. 2 (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,) 3 I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day. 4 And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women. 5 As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished. 6 And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me. 7 And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 8 And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest. 9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. 10 And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do. 11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus. 12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there, 13 Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him. 14 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth. 15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard. 16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. 17 And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance; 18 And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me. 19 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee: 20 And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him. 21 And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles. 22 And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live. 23 And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air, 24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him. 25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned? 26 When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman. 27 Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea. 28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born. 29 Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him. 30 On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
