Was gilt’s? (Jer 6,1; Jer 48,47)

Jeremia 49

King James Version

1 Concerning the Ammonites, thus saith the LORD; Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why then doth their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities?2 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it shall be a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel be heir unto them that were his heirs, saith the LORD.3 Howl, O Heshbon, for Ai is spoiled: cry, ye daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth; lament, and run to and fro by the hedges; for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together.4 Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying , Who shall come unto me?5 Behold, I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts, from all those that be about thee; and ye shall be driven out every man right forth; and none shall gather up him that wandereth.6 And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon, saith the LORD.7 Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?8 Flee ye, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time that I will visit him.9 If grapegatherers come to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough.10 But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not.11 Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.12 For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it .13 For I have sworn by myself, saith the LORD, that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.14 I have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying , Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.15 For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen, and despised among men.16 Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD.17 Also Edom shall be a desolation: every one that goeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.18 As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it.19 Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?20 Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them.21 The earth is moved at the noise of their fall, at the cry the noise thereof was heard in the Red sea.22 Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.23 Concerning Damascus. Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.24 Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her : anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.25 How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!26 Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts.27 And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Benhadad.28 Concerning Kedar, and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon shall smite, thus saith the LORD; Arise ye, go up to Kedar, and spoil the men of the east.29 Their tents and their flocks shall they take away: they shall take to themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels; and they shall cry unto them, Fear is on every side.30 Flee, get you far off, dwell deep, O ye inhabitants of Hazor, saith the LORD; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath taken counsel against you, and hath conceived a purpose against you.31 Arise, get you up unto the wealthy nation, that dwelleth without care, saith the LORD, which have neither gates nor bars, which dwell alone.32 And their camels shall be a booty, and the multitude of their cattle a spoil: and I will scatter into all winds them that are in the utmost corners; and I will bring their calamity from all sides thereof, saith the LORD.33 And Hazor shall be a dwelling for dragons, and a desolation for ever: there shall no man abide there, nor any son of man dwell in it.34 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against Elam in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,35 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might.36 And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.37 For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:38 And I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence the king and the princes, saith the LORD.39 But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of Elam, saith the LORD.

1 Concerning the Ammonites. Thus says the LORD: “Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Why then has Milcom[1] dispossessed Gad, and his people settled in its cities? (1Kön 11,5; 1Kön 11,33; 2Kön 23,13; Jer 25,21; Hes 21,28; Hes 25,2; Am 1,13)2 Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will cause the battle cry to be heard against Rabbah of the Ammonites; it shall become a desolate mound, and its villages shall be burned with fire; then Israel shall dispossess those who dispossessed him, says the LORD. (Jer 4,19; Jer 30,18; Hes 21,20; Hes 25,5; Am 1,14)3 “Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste! Cry out, O daughters of Rabbah! Put on sackcloth, lament, and run to and fro among the hedges! For Milcom shall go into exile, with his priests and his officials. (1Kön 11,5; 1Kön 11,33; 2Kön 23,13; Jer 2,1; Jer 4,8; Jer 48,2; Jer 48,7; Jer 48,37)4 Why do you boast of your valleys,[2] O faithless daughter, who trusted in her treasures, saying, ‘Who will come against me?’ (Jer 3,14; Jer 48,7)5 Behold, I will bring terror upon you, declares the Lord GOD of hosts, from all who are around you, and you shall be driven out, every man straight before him, with none to gather the fugitives. (Jer 48,43)6 “But afterward I will restore the fortunes of the Ammonites, declares the LORD.” (Jer 48,47)7 Concerning Edom. Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Is wisdom no more in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom vanished? (Jes 19,11; Jes 19,12; Jes 34,5; Jer 25,21; Jer 49,20; Am 1,11; Ob 1,1; Ob 1,9; Mal 1,2)8 Flee, turn back, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Dedan! For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time when I punish him. (1Mo 25,3; Jer 25,23; Jer 46,21; Jer 49,30; Jer 50,27; Jer 50,31)9 If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave gleanings? If thieves came by night, would they not destroy only enough for themselves? (Ri 8,2; Ob 1,5; Ob 1,6)10 But I have stripped Esau bare; I have uncovered his hiding places, and he is not able to conceal himself. His children are destroyed, and his brothers, and his neighbors; and he is no more. (Jes 17,14; Jer 9,1; Jer 31,15; Mal 1,3)11 Leave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive; and let your widows trust in me.” (Ps 10,14; Ps 10,18; Ps 68,5)12 For thus says the LORD: “If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, will you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. (Jer 25,28; Jer 25,29; Ob 1,16)13 For I have sworn by myself, declares the LORD, that Bozrah shall become a horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.” (Jer 22,5; Jer 24,9; Jer 48,24; Jer 49,22)14 I have heard a message from the LORD, and an envoy has been sent among the nations: “Gather yourselves together and come against her, and rise up for battle! (Jes 13,4; Ob 1,1)15 For behold, I will make you small among the nations, despised among mankind.16 The horror you inspire has deceived you, and the pride of your heart, you who live in the clefts of the rock,[3] who hold the height of the hill. Though you make your nest as high as the eagle’s, I will bring you down from there, declares the LORD. (Jer 48,28)17 “Edom shall become a horror. Everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss because of all its disasters. (Jer 50,13; Hes 35,3; Hes 35,7; Hes 35,9)18 As when Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities were overthrown, says the LORD, no man shall dwell there, no man shall sojourn in her. (5Mo 29,23; Jes 13,19; Jer 49,33)19 Behold, like a lion coming up from the jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him[4] run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me? (Hi 9,19; Jer 4,7; Jer 10,6; Jer 12,5; Jer 30,21; Jer 50,44)20 Therefore hear the plan that the LORD has made against Edom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of Teman: Even the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. (Jer 7,1; Jer 50,45; Hes 35,3; Hes 35,7; Hes 35,9)21 At the sound of their fall the earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. (Jer 8,16; Jer 50,46; Hes 26,15)22 Behold, one shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against Bozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart of a woman in her birth pains.” (Jer 6,24; Jer 48,40; Jer 49,13; Jer 49,24)23 Concerning Damascus: “Hamath and Arpad are confounded, for they have heard bad news; they melt in fear, they are troubled like the sea that cannot be quiet. (1Kön 8,65; 2Kön 18,34; Jes 17,1; Am 1,3; Sach 9,2; Sach 9,4)24 Damascus has become feeble, she turned to flee, and panic seized her; anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her, as of a woman in labor. (Jer 22,1; Jer 23,1; Jer 46,5)25 How is the famous city not forsaken, the city of my joy? (Jer 33,9)26 Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares, and all her soldiers shall be destroyed in that day, declares the LORD of hosts. (Jer 50,30)27 And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall devour the strongholds of Ben-hadad.” (1Kön 15,18; 1Kön 20,1; 2Kön 6,24; 2Kön 8,7; 2Kön 13,3; Jer 17,27; Jer 23,1)28 Concerning Kedar and the kingdoms of Hazor that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon struck down. Thus says the LORD: “Rise up, advance against Kedar! Destroy the people of the east! (Ri 6,3; Jes 11,14; Jes 21,16; Jes 60,7; Jer 49,14; Hes 25,4; Hes 25,10)29 Their tents and their flocks shall be taken, their curtains and all their goods; their camels shall be led away from them, and men shall cry to them: ‘Terror on every side!’ (Ps 120,5; Hl 1,5; Jer 6,25)30 Flee, wander far away, dwell in the depths, O inhabitants of Hazor! declares the LORD. For Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has made a plan against you and formed a purpose against you. (Jer 49,8)31 “Rise up, advance against a nation at ease, that dwells securely, declares the LORD, that has no gates or bars, that dwells alone. (Hi 16,12; Jer 28,1; Hes 38,8; Hes 38,11)32 Their camels shall become plunder, their herds of livestock a spoil. I will scatter to every wind those who cut the corners of their hair, and I will bring their calamity from every side of them, declares the LORD. (Jer 9,26; Jer 49,36; Hes 38,12)33 Hazor shall become a haunt of jackals, an everlasting waste; no man shall dwell there; no man shall sojourn in her.” (Jer 9,11; Jer 49,18)34 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah. (1Mo 14,1; 2Kön 24,17; 2Kön 24,18; Jes 11,11; Jes 21,2; Jer 25,25; Hes 32,24; Dan 8,2)35 Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the mainstay of their might. (Jes 22,6; Jer 34,1)36 And I will bring upon Elam the four winds from the four quarters of heaven. And I will scatter them to all those winds, and there shall be no nation to which those driven out of Elam shall not come. (Jer 34,1)37 I will terrify Elam before their enemies and before those who seek their life. I will bring disaster upon them, my fierce anger, declares the LORD. I will send the sword after them, until I have consumed them, (Jer 1,17; Jer 9,16; Jer 12,13; Jer 34,1)38 and I will set my throne in Elam and destroy their king and officials, declares the LORD. (Jer 34,1)39 “But in the latter days I will restore the fortunes of Elam, declares the LORD.” (Jer 34,1; Jer 48,47)
