Eroberung der Stadt Ai

1 Und der HERR sprach zu Josua: Fürchte dich nicht und verzage nicht! Nimm mit dir das ganze Kriegsvolk und mache dich auf und zieh hinauf nach Ai! Sieh, ich habe den König von Ai samt seinem Volk, seiner Stadt und seinem Land in deine Hand gegeben. 2 Und du sollst mit Ai und seinem König tun, wie du mit Jericho und seinem König getan hast, nur dass ihr die Beute und das Vieh unter euch teilen sollt. Lege einen Hinterhalt hinter die Stadt! (5Mo 20,10; Jos 6,21) 3 Da machte sich Josua auf und das ganze Kriegsvolk, um nach Ai hinaufzuziehen. Und Josua erwählte dreißigtausend streitbare Männer und sandte sie aus bei Nacht 4 und gebot ihnen: Seht zu, ihr sollt der Hinterhalt sein hinter der Stadt. Entfernt euch aber nicht allzu weit von der Stadt und seid allesamt bereit! 5 Ich aber und das ganze Kriegsvolk, das bei mir ist, wollen nahe an die Stadt heranrücken. Und wenn sie ausziehen uns entgegen wie das erste Mal, so wollen wir vor ihnen fliehen, 6 damit sie uns nachjagen, bis wir sie von der Stadt weglocken. Denn sie werden denken, wir fliehen vor ihnen wie das erste Mal. Und wenn wir vor ihnen fliehen, (Jos 7,5) 7 sollt ihr hervorbrechen aus dem Hinterhalt und die Stadt einnehmen; denn der HERR, euer Gott, wird sie in eure Hände geben. 8 Wenn ihr aber die Stadt eingenommen habt, so steckt sie in Brand und tut nach dem Wort des HERRN. Siehe, ich hab’s euch geboten. 9 So sandte sie Josua hin. Und sie zogen in den Hinterhalt und lagerten sich zwischen Bethel und Ai, westlich von Ai. Josua aber blieb die Nacht unter dem Volk 10 und machte sich früh am Morgen auf und ordnete das Volk und zog hinauf mit den Ältesten Israels vor dem Volk her nach Ai. 11 Und das ganze Kriegsvolk, das bei ihm war, zog hinauf, und sie kamen nahe vor die Stadt und lagerten sich nördlich von Ai, sodass nur ein Tal war zwischen ihnen und Ai. 12 Er hatte aber etwa fünftausend Mann genommen und in den Hinterhalt gelegt zwischen Bethel und Ai, westlich von der Stadt. 13 Und sie stellten das Volk auf, das ganze Lager nördlich vor der Stadt, ebenso die Nachhut westlich der Stadt. Und Josua zog hin in dieser Nacht mitten in das Tal. 14 Als aber der König von Ai das sah, machten die Männer der Stadt sich eilends früh auf und zogen aus an einen bestimmten Ort nach dem Jordantal zu, um Israel zum Kampf zu begegnen, er mit seinem ganzen Kriegsvolk. Denn er wusste nicht, dass ihm ein Hinterhalt gelegt war auf der andern Seite der Stadt. 15 Josua aber und ganz Israel stellten sich, als würden sie vor ihnen geschlagen, und flohen auf dem Wege zur Wüste. 16 Da wurde das ganze Volk in der Stadt zusammengerufen, um ihnen nachzujagen. Und sie jagten Josua nach und wurden von der Stadt weggelockt, 17 sodass nicht ein Mann in Ai und Bethel zurückblieb, der nicht ausgezogen wäre, um Israel nachzujagen, und ließen die Stadt offen stehen und jagten Israel nach. 18 Da sprach der HERR zu Josua: Strecke die Lanze in deiner Hand aus gegen Ai; denn ich will es in deine Hand geben. Und als Josua die Lanze in seiner Hand gegen die Stadt ausstreckte, 19 da brach der Hinterhalt eilends auf aus seinem Versteck, und sie liefen, nachdem er seine Hand ausgestreckt hatte, und kamen in die Stadt und nahmen sie ein und steckten sie sogleich in Brand. 20 Und die Männer von Ai wandten sich um und sahen hinter sich und sahen den Rauch der Stadt aufsteigen gen Himmel und vermochten nicht zu fliehen, weder hierhin noch dorthin. Denn das Volk, das zur Wüste floh, kehrte um gegen die, die ihnen nachjagten. 21 Und als Josua und ganz Israel sahen, dass der Hinterhalt die Stadt eingenommen hatte, weil von der Stadt Rauch aufstieg, kehrten sie um und schlugen die Männer von Ai. 22 Und die in der Stadt kamen auch heraus ihnen entgegen, und die Männer von Ai gerieten mitten unter Israel, von hierher und von dorther. Und sie erschlugen sie, bis niemand mehr von ihnen übrig blieb noch entrinnen konnte. 23 Den König von Ai aber ergriffen sie lebendig und brachten ihn zu Josua. 24 Und als Israel alle Einwohner von Ai getötet hatte auf dem Felde und in der Wüste, wohin sie ihnen nachgejagt waren, und alle durch die Schärfe des Schwerts gefallen und umgekommen waren, da kehrte sich ganz Israel gegen Ai und schlug es mit der Schärfe des Schwerts. 25 Und alle, die an diesem Tage fielen, Männer und Frauen, waren zwölftausend, alle Leute von Ai. 26 Josua aber zog nicht eher seine Hand zurück, mit der er die Lanze ausgestreckt hatte, bis der Bann vollstreckt war an allen Einwohnern von Ai. 27 Nur das Vieh und die Beute der Stadt teilte Israel unter sich nach dem Wort des HERRN, das er Josua geboten hatte. 28 Und Josua brannte Ai nieder und machte es zu einem Schutthaufen für immer, der noch heute daliegt. 29 Und den König von Ai ließ er an einen Baum hängen bis zum Abend. Als aber die Sonne untergegangen war, gebot Josua, dass man seinen Leichnam vom Baum nehmen sollte, und sie warfen ihn unter das Stadttor und machten einen großen Steinhaufen über ihm, der bis auf diesen Tag da ist. (5Mo 21,22)

Altarbau und Verkündigung des Gesetzes

30 Damals baute Josua dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, einen Altar auf dem Berge Ebal, (5Mo 27,2) 31 wie Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, den Israeliten geboten hatte, wie geschrieben steht im Gesetzbuch des Mose: einen Altar von unbehauenen Steinen, die mit keinem Eisen bearbeitet waren. Und sie opferten dem HERRN darauf Brandopfer und brachten Dankopfer dar, (2Mo 20,25; 2Mo 24,1) 32 und er schrieb dort auf die Steine eine Abschrift des Gesetzes, das Mose vor den Augen der Israeliten geschrieben hatte. (5Mo 17,18) 33 Und ganz Israel stand mit seinen Ältesten und Amtleuten und Richtern zu beiden Seiten der Lade gegenüber den levitischen Priestern, die die Lade des Bundes des HERRN trugen, die Fremdlinge sowohl als auch die Einheimischen, die eine Hälfte zum Berge Garizim hin und die andere Hälfte zum Berge Ebal hin, wie Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, vormals geboten hatte, das Volk Israel zu segnen. (5Mo 11,29; 5Mo 27,12; 5Mo 28,1) 34 Danach ließ er ausrufen alle Worte des Gesetzes, den Segen und den Fluch, ganz wie es geschrieben steht im Gesetzbuch. 35 Es war kein Wort, das Mose geboten hatte, das Josua nicht hätte ausrufen lassen vor der ganzen Gemeinde Israel und vor den Frauen und Kindern und Fremdlingen, die mit ihnen zogen.

Ai wird erobert und gebannt

1 Und der HERR sprach zu Josua: Fürchte dich nicht und erschrick nicht^[1]! Nimm das ganze Kriegsvolk mit dir und mache dich auf, zieh hinauf nach Ai! Siehe, ich habe den König von Ai sowie sein Volk, seine Stadt und sein Land in deine Hand gegeben. (5Mo 7,18; Jos 1,9; Jos 6,2) 2 Du sollst mit Ai und seinem König das tun, was du mit Jericho und seinem König getan hast. Jedoch seine Beute und sein Vieh dürft ihr unter euch aufteilen^[2]. 3 Da machte sich Josua mit dem ganzen Kriegsvolk auf, um nach Ai hinaufzuziehen. Und Josua wählte 30 000 Mann, tüchtige Krieger, aus und sandte sie bei Nacht aus. (2Mo 17,9; Jos 10,7) 4 Er befahl ihnen: Seht, ihr sollt euch in den Hinterhalt legen, hinter der Stadt^[3]! Entfernt euch nicht zu sehr von der Stadt, sondern seid alle bereit! (Ri 9,32; Ri 20,29) 5 Ich aber und das ganze Volk, das bei mir ist, wir wollen nahe an die Stadt heranrücken^[4]. Und es soll geschehen, wenn sie herauskommen, uns entgegen, wie beim ersten Mal, so wollen wir vor ihnen fliehen. 6 Sie werden uns nachsetzen, bis wir sie von der Stadt abgeschnitten haben. Denn sie werden ⟨sich⟩ sagen: Sie fliehen vor uns wie beim ersten Mal! Wenn wir dann vor ihnen fliehen werden, (Ri 20,32) 7 dann sollt ihr euch aus dem Hinterhalt aufmachen und die Stadt einnehmen. Der HERR, euer Gott, wird sie in eure Hand geben. 8 Und es soll geschehen, wenn ihr die Stadt eingenommen habt, dann sollt ihr sie in Brand stecken^[5]; nach dem Wort des HERRN sollt ihr ⟨es⟩ tun. Seht, ich habe es euch befohlen. – 9 Da schickte Josua sie los, und sie begaben sich in den Hinterhalt und blieben zwischen Bethel und Ai, westlich von Ai. Josua aber verbrachte jene Nacht mitten unter dem Volk^[6]. 10 Und Josua machte sich des Morgens früh auf und musterte das Volk. Dann zog er mit den Ältesten Israels vor dem Volk her nach Ai hinauf. (Jos 3,1) 11 Und alles Kriegsvolk, das bei ihm war, zog hinauf und rückte heran, und sie kamen vor die Stadt. Sie lagerten sich nördlich von Ai, sodass das Tal zwischen ihnen^[7] und Ai war. 12 Er hatte aber etwa fünftausend Mann genommen und sie als Hinterhalt zwischen Bethel und Ai gelegt, westlich von der Stadt. (1Sam 15,5) 13 Und so stellten sie das Volk auf, das ganze Lager, das nördlich von der Stadt war, und sein Ende^[8] westlich von der Stadt. Und Josua zog in dieser Nacht mitten in die Talebene. 14 Und es geschah, als der König von Ai es sah, da rückten die Männer der Stadt in aller Frühe eilends aus^[9], Israel entgegen zum Kampf, er und sein ganzes Volk, zur Begegnung^[10] vor der Steppe^[11]. Er hatte aber nicht erkannt, dass ihm im Rücken der Stadt ein Hinterhalt ⟨gelegt war⟩. (Ri 20,34) 15 Josua und ganz Israel ließen sich nun von ihnen schlagen und flohen zur Wüste hin. 16 Da wurde das ganze Volk, das in der Stadt war, zusammengerufen, um ihnen nachzujagen. Und sie jagten Josua nach und wurden von der Stadt abgeschnitten. 17 Da blieb kein Mann in Ai und Bethel zurück, der nicht hinter Israel her ausgezogen wäre. Und sie ließen die Stadt offenstehen und jagten Israel nach. (Ri 20,31) 18 Da sprach der HERR zu Josua: Strecke das Kurzschwert, das in deiner Hand ist, gegen Ai aus; denn in deine Hand will ich es geben. Josua streckte das Kurzschwert, das in seiner Hand war, gegen die Stadt aus. (2Mo 8,1) 19 Der Hinterhalt aber hatte sich eilends aus seiner Stellung aufgemacht^[12], und sie liefen, als er seine Hand ausstreckte. Und sie kamen zur Stadt, nahmen sie ein, und sie eilten und steckten sie in Brand^[13]. 20 Und die Männer von Ai wandten sich um und sahen, und siehe, der Rauch von der Stadt stieg zum Himmel auf. Da war in ihnen keine Kraft mehr zu fliehen, weder hierhin noch dorthin. Und das Volk, das ⟨bisher⟩ zur Wüste geflohen war, wandte sich ⟨nun⟩ um gegen den Verfolger. (Ri 20,40) 21 Denn als Josua und ganz Israel sahen, dass der Hinterhalt die Stadt eingenommen hatte und dass der Rauch der Stadt aufstieg, da kehrten sie um und schlugen die Männer von Ai. 22 Diese waren ja aus der Stadt ihnen entgegen ausgezogen, sodass sie ⟨nun⟩ mitten zwischen Israel waren, die einen ⟨kamen⟩ von hier und die andern von dort. Und sie erschlugen sie, bis ⟨von⟩ ihnen kein Entronnener oder Entkommener mehr übrig blieb. (Jos 6,21) 23 Den König von Ai hingegen ergriffen sie lebendig und brachten ihn zu Josua. (Jos 10,22) 24 Und es geschah, als Israel alle Bewohner von Ai auf dem Feld, in der Wüste, wohin sie ihnen nachgejagt waren, umgebracht hatte^[14] und sie alle durch die Schärfe des Schwertes gefallen waren, bis sie vollständig aufgerieben waren, da kehrte ganz Israel um nach Ai, und sie schlugen es mit der Schärfe des Schwertes. 25 ⟨Die Zahl⟩ aller Männer und Frauen, die an diesem Tag fielen, war zwölftausend, alle Leute von Ai. 26 Josua aber zog seine Hand, die er mit dem Kurzschwert ausgestreckt hatte, nicht zurück, bis er an allen Bewohnern von Ai den Bann vollstreckt hatte. (2Mo 17,12; 5Mo 2,34; Jos 9,3) 27 Nur das Vieh und die Beute dieser Stadt erbeutete Israel für sich, nach dem Wort des HERRN, das er dem Josua befohlen hatte. 28 Und Josua brannte Ai nieder und machte es zu einem ewigen Hügel der Öde, bis zum heutigen Tag. (5Mo 13,17) 29 Und den König von Ai ließ er an einen Baum^[15] hängen bis zum Abend. Und bei Sonnenuntergang gab Josua Befehl, und sie nahmen seine Leiche vom Baum herunter und warfen sie an den Eingang des Stadttores und errichteten über ihr einen großen Steinhaufen, ⟨der⟩ bis zum heutigen Tag ⟨da ist⟩. Altar auf dem Ebal – Gesetzessteine – Segen und Fluch

30 Damals baute Josua dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels, einen Altar auf dem Berg Ebal, (1Mo 12,7) 31 wie Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, den Söhnen Israel geboten hatte, wie im Buch des Gesetzes des Mose geschrieben steht, einen Altar von unbehauenen Steinen, über denen man kein Eisen geschwungen hatte. Ai destroyed

1 Then the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Take the whole army with you, and go up and attack Ai. For I have delivered into your hands the king of Ai, his people, his city and his land. 2 You shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king, except that you may carry off their plunder and livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush behind the city.’ 3 So Joshua and the whole army moved out to attack Ai. He chose thirty thousand of his best fighting men and sent them out at night 4 with these orders: ‘Listen carefully. You are to set an ambush behind the city. Don’t go very far from it. All of you be on the alert. 5 I and all those with me will advance on the city, and when the men come out against us, as they did before, we will flee from them. 6 They will pursue us until we have lured them away from the city, for they will say, “They are running away from us as they did before.” So when we flee from them, 7 you are to rise up from ambush and take the city. The Lord your God will give it into your hand. 8 When you have taken the city, set it on fire. Do what the Lord has commanded. See to it; you have my orders.’ 9 Then Joshua sent them off, and they went to the place of ambush and lay in wait between Bethel and Ai, to the west of Ai – but Joshua spent that night with the people. 10 Early the next morning Joshua mustered his army, and he and the leaders of Israel marched before them to Ai. 11 The entire force that was with him marched up and approached the city and arrived in front of it. They set up camp north of Ai, with the valley between them and the city. 12 Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city. 13 So the soldiers took up their positions – with the main camp to the north of the city and the ambush to the west of it. That night Joshua went into the valley. 14 When the king of Ai saw this, he and all the men of the city hurried out early in the morning to meet Israel in battle at a certain place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an ambush had been set against him behind the city. 15 Joshua and all Israel let themselves be driven back before them, and they fled towards the wilderness. 16 All the men of Ai were called to pursue them, and they pursued Joshua and were lured away from the city. 17 Not a man remained in Ai or Bethel who did not go after Israel. They left the city open and went in pursuit of Israel. 18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, ‘Hold out towards Ai the javelin that is in your hand, for into your hand I will deliver the city.’ So Joshua held out towards the city the javelin that was in his hand. 19 As soon as he did this, the men in the ambush rose quickly from their position and rushed forward. They entered the city and captured it and quickly set it on fire. 20 The men of Ai looked back and saw the smoke of the city rising up into the sky, but they had no chance to escape in any direction; the Israelites who had been fleeing towards the wilderness had turned back against their pursuers. 21 For when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that smoke was going up from the city, they turned round and attacked the men of Ai. 22 Those in the ambush also came out of the city against them, so that they were caught in the middle, with Israelites on both sides. Israel cut them down, leaving them neither survivors nor fugitives. 23 But they took the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua. 24 When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai in the fields and in the wilderness where they had chased them, and when every one of them had been put to the sword, all the Israelites returned to Ai and killed those who were in it. 25 Twelve thousand men and women fell that day – all the people of Ai. 26 For Joshua did not draw back the hand that held out his javelin until he had destroyed^[1] all who lived in Ai. 27 But Israel did carry off for themselves the livestock and plunder of this city, as the Lord had instructed Joshua. 28 So Joshua burned Ai^[2] and made it a permanent heap of ruins, a desolate place to this day. 29 He impaled the body of the king of Ai on a pole and left it there until evening. At sunset, Joshua ordered them to take the body from the pole and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And they raised a large pile of rocks over it, which remains to this day.

The covenant renewed at Mount Ebal

30 Then Joshua built on Mount Ebal an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel, 31 as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses – an altar of uncut stones, on which no iron tool had been used. On it they offered to the Lord burnt offerings and sacrificed fellowship offerings. 32 There, in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua wrote on stones a copy of the law of Moses. 33 All the Israelites, with their elders, officials and judges, were standing on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the Lord, facing the Levitical priests who carried it. Both the foreigners living among them and the native-born were there. Half of the people stood in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord had formerly commanded when he gave instructions to bless the people of Israel. 34 Afterwards, Joshua read all the words of the law – the blessings and the curses – just as it is written in the Book of the Law. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the foreigners who lived among them.

See, I have commanded you. 9 Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people. 10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai. 11 And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai. 12 And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city. 13 And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley. 14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it , that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city. 15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness. 16 And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city. 17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel. 18 And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city. 19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire. 20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers. 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai. 22 And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape. 23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua. 24 And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword. 25 And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai. 26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. 27 Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua. 28 And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day. 29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day. 30 Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal, 31 As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings. 32 And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel. 33 And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel. 34 And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
