Die Kundschafter in Jericho

1 Josua aber, der Sohn Nuns, sandte von Schittim zwei Männer heimlich als Kundschafter aus und sagte ihnen: Geht hin, seht das Land an, auch Jericho. Die gingen hin und kamen in das Haus einer Hure, die hieß Rahab, und kehrten dort ein. (Mt 1,5; Hebr 11,31; Jak 2,25) 2 Da wurde dem König von Jericho angesagt: Siehe, es sind in dieser Nacht Männer von den Israeliten hereingekommen, um das Land zu erkunden. 3 Da sandte der König von Jericho zu Rahab und ließ ihr sagen: Gib die Männer heraus, die zu dir in dein Haus gekommen sind; denn sie sind gekommen, um das ganze Land zu erkunden. 4 Aber die Frau nahm die beiden Männer und verbarg sie. Und sie sprach: Ja, es sind Männer zu mir hereingekommen, aber ich wusste nicht, woher sie waren. (Jos 6,17) 5 Und als man das Stadttor schließen wollte, da es finster wurde, gingen die Männer hinaus, und ich weiß nicht, wo sie hingegangen sind. Jagt ihnen eilends nach, dann werdet ihr sie ergreifen. 6 Sie aber hatte sie auf das Dach steigen lassen und unter den Flachsstängeln versteckt, die sie auf dem Dach ausgebreitet hatte. 7 Die Verfolger aber jagten ihnen nach auf dem Wege zum Jordan bis an die Furten, und man schloss das Tor zu, als sie draußen waren. 8 Und ehe die Männer sich schlafen legten, stieg Rahab zu ihnen hinauf auf das Dach 9 und sprach zu ihnen: Ich weiß, dass der HERR euch das Land gegeben hat; denn ein Schrecken vor euch ist über uns gefallen, und alle Bewohner des Landes sind vor euch feige geworden. (2Mo 23,27) 10 Denn wir haben gehört, wie der HERR das Wasser im Schilfmeer ausgetrocknet hat vor euch her, als ihr aus Ägypten zogt, und was ihr den beiden Königen der Amoriter, Sihon und Og, jenseits des Jordans getan habt, wie ihr an ihnen den Bann vollstreckt habt. (2Mo 14,21; 4Mo 21,21) 11 Und seitdem wir das gehört haben, ist unser Herz verzagt und es wagt keiner mehr, vor euch zu atmen; denn der HERR, euer Gott, ist Gott oben im Himmel und unten auf Erden. (5Mo 4,39; Jos 5,1) 12 So schwört mir nun bei dem HERRN, weil ich an euch Barmherzigkeit getan habe, dass auch ihr an meines Vaters Hause Barmherzigkeit tut, und gebt mir ein sicheres Zeichen, (Jos 6,23; Jos 6,25) 13 dass ihr leben lasst meinen Vater, meine Mutter, meine Brüder und meine Schwestern und alles, was sie haben, und uns vom Tode errettet. 14 Die Männer sprachen zu ihr: Tun wir nicht Barmherzigkeit und Treue an dir, wenn uns der HERR das Land gibt, so wollen wir selbst des Todes sein, sofern du unsere Sache nicht verrätst. 15 Da ließ Rahab sie an einem Seil durchs Fenster hinab; denn ihr Haus war an der Stadtmauer, und sie wohnte an der Mauer. 16 Und sie sprach zu ihnen: Geht auf das Gebirge, dass eure Verfolger euch nicht begegnen, und verbergt euch dort drei Tage, bis zurückkommen, die euch nachjagen; danach geht eures Weges. 17 Die Männer aber sprachen zu ihr: So wollen wir den Eid einlösen, den du uns hast schwören lassen: 18 Wenn wir ins Land kommen, so sollst du dies rote Seil in das Fenster knüpfen, durch das du uns herabgelassen hast, und zu dir ins Haus versammeln deinen Vater, deine Mutter, deine Brüder und deines Vaters ganzes Haus. 19 So soll es sein: Wer zur Tür deines Hauses herausgeht, dessen Blut komme über sein Haupt, aber wir seien unschuldig; doch das Blut aller, die in deinem Hause bleiben, soll über unser Haupt kommen, wenn Hand an sie gelegt wird. 20 Und wenn du etwas von dieser unserer Sache verrätst, so sind wir frei von dem Eid, den du uns hast schwören lassen. 21 Sie sprach: Es sei, wie ihr sagt!, und ließ sie gehen. Und sie gingen weg. Und sie knüpfte das rote Seil ins Fenster. 22 Sie aber gingen weg und kamen aufs Gebirge und blieben drei Tage dort, bis die zurückgekommen waren, die ihnen nachjagten. Denn sie hatten sie gesucht auf allen Straßen und doch nicht gefunden. 23 Da kehrten die beiden Männer um und gingen vom Gebirge herab und setzten über und kamen zu Josua, dem Sohn Nuns, und erzählten ihm alles, was ihnen begegnet war, 24 und sprachen zu Josua: Der HERR hat uns das ganze Land in unsere Hände gegeben, und es sind auch alle Bewohner des Landes vor uns feige geworden. (Jos 9,1)

2 Das wurde jedoch dem König von Jericho berichtet: Siehe, in dieser Nacht sind Männer von den Söhnen Israel hierhergekommen, um das Land zu erkunden. (Ri 18,2) 3 Da schickte der König von Jericho zu Rahab und ließ ⟨ihr⟩ sagen: Gib die Männer heraus, die zu dir gekommen und in dein Haus eingekehrt sind! Denn um das ganze Land zu erkunden, sind sie gekommen. 4 Die Frau aber nahm die beiden Männer und versteckte sie. Und sie sagte: Ja, die Männer sind zu mir gekommen, aber ich habe nicht erkannt, woher sie waren. (Jos 6,17) 5 Als nun das Tor bei ⟨Einbruch⟩ der Dunkelheit geschlossen werden sollte, da gingen die Männer ⟨wieder⟩ hinaus; ich habe nicht erkannt, wohin die Männer gegangen sind. Jagt ihnen eilends nach, dann werdet ihr sie einholen! – (1Sam 19,14) 6 Sie hatte sie aber auf das Dach hinaufgeführt und unter den Flachsstängeln versteckt, die sie sich auf dem Dach aufgeschichtet hatte. (2Sam 17,19) 7 Da jagten ihnen die Männer nach, auf dem Weg zum Jordan, bis zu den Furten. Und man schloss das Tor, sobald die, die ihnen nachjagten, draußen waren. (Ri 3,28) 8 Aber bevor sie sich schlafen legten, stieg sie zu ihnen auf das Dach hinauf 9 und sagte zu den Männern: Ich habe erkannt, dass der HERR euch das Land gegeben hat und dass der Schrecken vor euch^[1] auf uns gefallen ist, sodass alle Bewohner des Landes vor euch mutlos geworden sind. 10 Denn wir haben gehört, dass der HERR das Wasser des Schilfmeeres vor euch ausgetrocknet hat, als ihr aus Ägypten zogt, und was ihr den beiden Königen der Amoriter getan habt, die jenseits des Jordan waren, dem Sihon und dem Og, an denen ihr den Bann vollstreckt habt. 12 So schwört mir nun beim HERRN, weil ich Gnade an euch erwiesen habe, dass auch ihr an meines Vaters Haus Gnade erweisen werdet! Und gebt mir ein zuverlässiges Zeichen^[2], (1Mo 24,3; 1Mo 40,14) 13 dass ihr meinen Vater und meine Mutter und meine Brüder und meine Schwestern samt allem, was zu ihnen gehört, am Leben lassen und unsere Seelen vom Tod retten werdet! 14 Da sagten die Männer zu ihr: Unsere Seele soll an eurer statt sterben, wenn ihr diese unsere Sache nicht verratet. 15 Da ließ sie sie an einem Seil durch das Fenster hinunter; denn ihr Haus befand sich an der Stadtmauer^[3], und sie wohnte an der Stadtmauer. (1Sam 19,12; Apg 9,25; Jak 2,25) 16 Und sie sagte zu ihnen: Geht ins Gebirge, damit die Verfolger nicht auf euch stoßen, und verbergt euch dort drei Tage, bis die Verfolger zurückgekehrt sind! Und sie entließ sie, und sie gingen weg. Sie aber band die rote Schnur ins Fenster. (2Mo 12,28) 22 Und sie gingen weg und kamen ins Gebirge und blieben drei Tage dort, bis die Verfolger zurückgekehrt waren. Die Verfolger aber hatten den ganzen Weg abgesucht und ⟨sie⟩ nicht gefunden. 23 Die beiden Männer kehrten nun um, stiegen von dem Gebirge herab, gingen hinüber und kamen zu Josua, dem Sohn des Nun; und sie erzählten ihm alles, was ihnen begegnet war. (Mk 6,30) 24 Und sie sagten zu Josua: Der HERR hat das ganze Land in unsere Hand gegeben; auch sind alle Bewohner des Landes vor uns mutlos geworden. Rahab and the spies

1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. ‘Go, look over the land,’ he said, ‘especially Jericho.’ So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. 2 The king of Jericho was told, ‘Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.’ 3 So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: ‘Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.’ 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, ‘Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. 5 At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.’ 6 (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.) 7 So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut. 8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof 9 and said to them, ‘I know that the Lord has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea^[1] for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.^[2] 11 When we heard of it, our hearts sank and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. 12 ‘Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them – and that you will save us from death.’ 14 ‘Our lives for your lives!’ the men assured her. ‘If you don’t tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the Lord gives us the land.’ 15 So she let them down by a rope through the window, for the house she lived in was part of the city wall. 16 She said to them, ‘Go to the hills so that the pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there for three days until they return, and then go on your way.’ 17 Now the men had said to her, ‘This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them. 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.’ 21 ‘Agreed,’ she replied. ‘Let it be as you say.’ So she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. 22 When they left, they went into the hills and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had searched all along the road and returned without finding them. 23 Then the two men started back. They went down out of the hills, forded the river and came to Joshua son of Nun and told him everything that had happened to them. 24 They said to Joshua, ‘The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us.’

And they went, and came into an harlot' house, named Rahab, and lodged there. 2 And it was told the king of Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country. 3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the country. 4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I wist not whence they were : 5 And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out: whither the men went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them. 6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof. 7 And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate. 8 And before they were laid down, she came up unto them upon the roof; 9 And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you. 10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. 11 And as soon as we had heard these things , our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath. 12 Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father' house, and give me a true token: 13 And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death. 14 And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee. 15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall. 16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way. 17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear. 18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father' household, home unto thee. 19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him. 20 And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear. 21 And she said, According unto your words, so be it. And she sent them away, and they departed: and she bound the scarlet line in the window. 22 And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not. 23 So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and told him all things that befell them: 24 And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the country do faint because of us.
