1 Und das Los fiel für den Stamm Manasse, denn er ist Josefs erstgeborener Sohn, und es fiel auf Machir, den erstgeborenen Sohn Manasses, den Vater Gileads, denn er war ein Kriegsmann, und er erhielt Gilead und Baschan. (4Mo 26,29; Jos 13,31) 2 Auf die andern Söhne Manasses aber nach ihren Geschlechtern fiel das Los auch, nämlich auf die Söhne Abiësers, die Söhne Heleks, die Söhne Asriëls, die Söhne Sichems, die Söhne Hefers und die Söhne Schemidas. Das sind die Nachkommen Manasses, des Sohnes Josefs, die Männer nach ihren Geschlechtern. 3 Aber Zelofhad, der Sohn Hefers, des Sohnes Gileads, des Sohnes Machirs, des Sohnes Manasses, hatte keine Söhne, sondern nur Töchter, und ihre Namen sind diese: Machla, Noa, Hogla, Milka, Tirza. (4Mo 26,33; 4Mo 27,1; 4Mo 36,1) 4 Und sie traten vor den Priester Eleasar und vor Josua, den Sohn Nuns, und vor die Obersten und sprachen: Der HERR hat Mose geboten, dass er uns solle Erbteil geben unter unsern Brüdern. Und man gab ihnen Erbteil unter den Brüdern ihres Vaters nach dem Befehl des HERRN. 5 Es fielen aber auf Manasse zehn Erbteile außer dem Lande Gilead und Baschan, das jenseits des Jordans liegt; 6 denn die Töchter Manasses empfingen Erbteil unter seinen Söhnen. Das Land Gilead aber erhielten die andern Söhne Manasses. 7 Und die Grenze Manasses war von Asser an nach Michmetat, das östlich von Sichem liegt, und reicht rechts an das Gebiet von En-Tappuach; 8 Manasse erhielt das Land von Tappuach, aber Tappuach selbst an der Grenze Manasses erhielten die Söhne Ephraim. 9 Danach kommt die Grenze herab zum Bach Kana an der Südseite des Baches; diese Städte gehören Ephraim inmitten der Städte Manasses. Die Grenze Manasses aber geht weiter an der Nordseite des Baches und endet am Meer; 10 Ephraim lag südwärts, Manasse nordwärts, und das Meer ist die Grenze. Sie stoßen an Asser im Norden und an Issachar im Osten. 11 Es hatte aber Manasse im Gebiet von Issachar und Asser: Bet-Schean und seine Ortschaften, Jibleam und seine Ortschaften und die Einwohner von Dor und seine Ortschaften und die von En-Dor und seine Ortschaften, die von Taanach und seine Ortschaften und die von Megiddo und seine Ortschaften samt den drei Höhen. (Ri 1,27) 12 Doch die Söhne Manasse konnten diese Städte nicht erobern, sondern die Kanaaniter vermochten in diesem Lande zu bleiben. 13 Da aber die Israeliten mächtig wurden, machten sie die Kanaaniter fronpflichtig; aber vertreiben konnten sie sie nicht. (Jos 16,10) 14 Da redeten die Nachkommen Josefs mit Josua und sprachen: Warum hast du mir nur ein Los und ein Erbteil gegeben? Ich bin doch ein großes Volk, da mich der HERR so gesegnet hat. 15 Da sprach Josua zu ihnen: Weil du ein großes Volk bist, so geh hinauf in den Wald und rode dort für dich im Lande der Perisiter und Refaïter, wenn dir das Gebirge Ephraim zu eng ist. 16 Da sprachen die Nachkommen Josefs: Das Gebirge wird nicht Raum genug für uns haben; dazu gibt es eiserne Wagen bei allen Kanaanitern, die im ebenen Land wohnen, bei denen zu Bet-Schean und seinen Ortschaften und bei denen in der Ebene Jesreel. (Ri 1,19) 17 Josua sprach zum Hause Josef, zu Ephraim und Manasse: Du bist ein großes Volk und bist so stark. Du sollst nicht nur ein Los haben, 18 sondern das Gebirge soll dein sein, wo der Wald ist; dort kannst du roden, und er soll dein sein, so weit er reicht; denn du wirst die Kanaaniter vertreiben, die eiserne Wagen haben und mächtig sind.

Erbteil des halben Stammes Manasse

2 Und es fiel^[2] für die übrigen Söhne Manasse nach ihren Sippen: für die Söhne des Abiëser, für die Söhne des Helek und für die Söhne des Asriël, für die Söhne des Sichem, für die Söhne des Hefer und für die Söhne des Schemida; das waren die Söhne Manasses, des Sohnes Josefs, die männlichen ⟨Nachkommen⟩ nach ihren Sippen. (Jos 16,6) 8 Dem Manasse gehörte das Land Tappuach; aber Tappuach ⟨selbst⟩ an der Grenze Manasses gehörte den Söhnen Ephraim. 9 Und die Grenze stieg hinab zum Bach Kana, ⟨und zwar⟩ auf der Südseite des Baches. Diese Städte gehörten Ephraim inmitten der Städte Manasses. Und das Gebiet Manasses war nördlich vom Bach und endete am Meer. (Jos 16,8; Jos 16,9) 10 Nach Süden zu ⟨gehörte es⟩ Ephraim und nach Norden zu Manasse. Das Meer war seine Grenze. 12 Aber die Söhne Manasse konnten diese Städte nicht in Besitz nehmen; so gelang es den Kanaanitern, in diesem Land wohnen zu bleiben. 13 Und es geschah, als die Söhne Israel stärker wurden, machten sie die Kanaaniter zu Zwangsarbeitern; aber sie vertrieben sie keineswegs. (Jos 16,10) 14 Und die Söhne Josef redeten zu Josua: Warum hast du mir als Erbteil ⟨nur⟩ ein Los und einen Anteil^[6] gegeben? Ich bin doch ein zahlreiches Volk, weil der HERR mich so ⟨reich⟩ gesegnet hat! (1Mo 48,20; 4Mo 26,54; 5Mo 33,17) 15 Da sagte Josua zu ihnen: Wenn du ein zahlreiches Volk bist, steige in den Wald hinauf und rode für dich dort im Land der Perisiter und der Refaïter, weil dir das Gebirge Ephraim zu eng ist! (1Mo 15,20; Ri 17,1) 16 Die Söhne Josef aber sagten: Das Gebirge reicht für uns nicht aus, und bei allen Kanaanitern, die im Flachland^[7] wohnen, sind eiserne Wagen: bei denen in Bet-Schean und seinen Tochterstädten und bei denen im Tal Jesreel. 17 Da sagte Josua zum Haus Josef, zu Ephraim und zu Manasse: Du bist ein zahlreiches Volk und hast eine große Kraft. Du sollst nicht ⟨nur⟩ ein Los haben, 18 sondern ein Gebirge soll dir ⟨zuteil⟩werden. Es ist ja ein Wald, den kannst du roden, und ⟨auch⟩ seine Ausläufer sollen^[8] dir gehören. Denn du wirst die Kanaaniter vertreiben, auch wenn sie eiserne Wagen haben – auch wenn sie stark sind^[9]. (1Mo 49,24; 5Mo 33,17; Jes 41,14)

1 This was the land allotted to the tribe of Manasseh as Joseph’s firstborn. Makir, Manasseh’s firstborn, the ancestor of the Gileadites, had received Gilead and Bashan because the Makirites were great soldiers. 2 So this land was allotted to the rest of the people of Manasseh – the clans of Abiezer, Helek, Asriel, Shechem, Hepher and Shemida. These are the other male descendants of Manasseh son of Joseph by their clans. 3 Now Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons but only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. 4 They went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, ‘The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives.’ So Joshua gave them an inheritance along with the brothers of their father, according to the Lord’s command. 5 Manasseh’s share consisted of ten tracts of land besides Gilead and Bashan east of the Jordan, 6 because the daughters of the tribe of Manasseh received an inheritance among the sons. The land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the descendants of Manasseh. 7 The territory of Manasseh extended from Asher to Mikmethath east of Shechem. The boundary ran southward from there to include the people living at En Tappuah. 8 (Manasseh had the land of Tappuah, but Tappuah itself, on the boundary of Manasseh, belonged to the Ephraimites.) 9 Then the boundary continued south to the Kanah Ravine. There were towns belonging to Ephraim lying among the towns of Manasseh, but the boundary of Manasseh was the northern side of the ravine and ended at the Mediterranean Sea. 10 On the south the land belonged to Ephraim, on the north to Manasseh. The territory of Manasseh reached the Mediterranean Sea and bordered Asher on the north and Issachar on the east. 11 Within Issachar and Asher, Manasseh also had Beth Shan, Ibleam and the people of Dor, Endor, Taanach and Megiddo, together with their surrounding settlements (the third in the list is Naphoth^[1]). 12 Yet the Manassites were not able to occupy these towns, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that region. 13 However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labour but did not drive them out completely. 14 The people of Joseph said to Joshua, ‘Why have you allotted us only one portion of land and one share for an inheritance? We are a numerous people, and the Lord has blessed us abundantly.’ 15 ‘If you are so numerous,’ Joshua answered, ‘and if the hill country of Ephraim is too small for you, go up into the forest and clear land for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzites and Rephaites.’ 16 The people of Joseph replied, ‘The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who live in the plain have chariots fitted with iron, both those in Beth Shan and its settlements and those in the Valley of Jezreel.’ 17 But Joshua said to the tribes of Joseph – to Ephraim and Manasseh – ‘You are numerous and very powerful. You will have not only one portion of land allotted to you 18 but the forested hill country as well. Clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours; though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron and though they are strong, you can drive them out.’
